Goliath, I'm surprised you haven't seen Network or A Face in the Crowd (among others). They just seem like they'd be up your ally since they don't depict American media in a positive light (should I say, expose them for what they are).

Well, there are lots of films out there that I still haven't seen, but which I would want to see someday. Sure, if I had a money tree and didn't have to do anything besides watching movies, I would've seen all of them already.

I'll add these two to my list, on your recommendation.

Well, I've seen about half of these on the net, the other half I rented from the library. I used to catch them on TCM but it just seems impossible now that I work multiple jobs. We can't all be Truffaut

Since you're seeing these on my recommendation, I certainly hope they hold up (it's been a while since I've seen them).

Primary Colors (1998) - 6.5
That's actually a glowing recommendation from me on a Hollywood drama. I still think it's funny as a comedy even if it's not all that smart or daring. I haven't seen it in quite awhile but I've seen it 3 times. I think Kathy Bates is always great (even in The Waterboy). And I liked Travolta in the movie. Not too many Travolta characters I really like.

The Birdcage (1996) - 6
If this is supposed to be a comedy, Robin Williams is really testing that theory. Like in Mrs. Doubtfire, every scene he's onscreen- I feel like he's about to implode from the weight of his own emotional self-destruction. Everyone else is doing a great job and this would be downright fun if they could make this out to be less a tragedy about how playing straight for a night is somehow killing Williams' character inside. It can't be that hard- all he has to do is be boring. Oh, wait... he already is. (Seriously, why does Hollywood make all gay characters that big name stars are willing to play so damn lame and cliched?) One thing occurred to me and I find this amusing- did Hackman have the same relationship with candy as Adrian Grenier did with drugs in Cecil B. Demented?

Wolf (1994) - 7.5
Everyone under the sun pans this movie (especially horror fans) and I still don't know why. I thought Nicholson did a great job of playing a defeated businessman (or was he a writer? I can't remember his profession in the film!) only to become a crazy monster, etc. Hey- when you compare this to the WAY OVER-THE-TOP stuff he did in The Shining and The Witches of Eastwick, this is restrained! The ending is admittedly pretty bad (with all the leaping fight scenes and not very entertaining makeup effects). But the story is good, the dialogue is smart, the acting is remarkable, and it's a lot of fun. James Spader is downright spine-chilling in the last 40 minutes. This is worth seeing just for him alone.

Regarding Henry (1991) - 7
Haven't seen it in a very long time but I always thought it was pretty good.

Postcards from the Edge (1990) - 7.5
Maybe I shouldn't but dang it- I like this movie. If I have to, I will say I like it because it's not realistic. I mean, you pretty much have to admit if more TV shows were made like this, TV this millennium (in progress) would actually be worth watching. I guess that's why I enjoyed this but again, the acting is so strong and even if it needs to be peeled down quite a bit, the ideas are good.

Working Girl (1988) - 6.5
This one I have a few problems with. Though it's still 10x better than something like Legally Blonde- the music is awful, Jack is a very boring person, there are too many moments where you wonder why Tess hasn't learned to get out while the getting is good (almost exclusively with Alec Baldwin's character- there's a scene after she catches him cheating and calls him a snake where she actually allows him to yell at her), and that moment in the elevator where Mr. Trask suggests Jack is thinking with his penis for me completely betrays that character and turns him into King Shit. That's one of those things I can never forgive a character for doing. So, when Tess finally gets the job she deserves and a chance to prove herself, I kind of have to imagine that it's Karma or God or something handing her this redemption and not the bastard who basically suggested her only worth is in the attention men pay her.

The Graduate (1967) - 9
I've seen this twice and there were some things that went over my head, but I really enjoyed watching it. I felt sorry for everyone and not in a condescending way, so that's saying something. Dustin Hoffman is so beautiful in this movie- that might have helped me get through it. (Or- am I thinking of Marathon Man?)

Joel & Ethan Coen:

Fargo (1996) - 10
No, I didn't laugh either. But I was still fascinated. A lot. In fact, I've probably seen this movie 5 times. Which is a lot for a drama. Along with Ghost World, this is the single best drama-comedy I've ever seen in my entire life (at least that comes to mind). What's all the fuss about? Probably the characterization. I like to hate most of these people, and yeah I think Marge and Norm are sweet, lovely people. This is a heartwarming ice-cold movie.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)- 9 As your attorney, I advise you to check this out.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)- 3.5 I hate Monty Python. I know I'm one of the few people on earth who does, and I'm okay with it.

William Friedkin:

The Exorcist (1973)- 8.5 Not the best horror film ever, but it gets the job done well enough, and it's a classic for well-deserved reasons.

John Landis:

The Stupids (1996)- I used to love this movie as a kid, but I know it's got to be one of those that don't hold up at all.
Trading Places (1983)- 7 Fun enough. Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy are entertaining in it.

Feels like second class Hitch, which is still pretty good.

Like Kubrick's The Shinning, it has excellent atmosphere that is ruined by some embarrassing moments.

I expect a few people to be shocked with this low rating for a universally acclaimed movie, but I nearly dozed of a few times when watching. It's too long and too slow and despite Brody's decent performance, it couldn't hold my attention.

Death and the Maiden (1994)- 7.5
If I'm not mistaken, this film deals with a victim of the Chilean junta's regime who recognizes her husband's guest as her former torturer and rapist. Good idea, plenty of suspense and action, but it takes a bit too long for the story to get moving.

Frantic (1988)- 8.5
Pure Hitchcockian masterpiece.

Johnny Depp really makes this film. Visually impressive, and a good exploration of an addict's delerious mind, but a weak narrative.

Twelve Monkeys (1995)- 8
Intruiging sf-thriller with a surprising twist at the time, although I'm still not sure I buy that one. It's one of those time-travel dilemma's you can debate forever.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)- 6
Has its funny moments, but I feel this is one of the most overrated movies of all time. I mean, most of the scenes are painfully unfunny, dull even. Give me 'Life of Brian' anyday, now that was a hilarious Monty Python movie!

The Netherlands' pride in Hollywood!


Zwartboek (Black book) (2006)- 7
Verhoeven's much anticipated come-back to Dutch cinema was widely celebrated as his best work of all time. Setting a record in audience numbers for a Dutch movie and gaining only raving reviews, I found it sadly overrated. Yes, it's decent entertainment, but that's all. It's true that Holland had never before produced a Hollywood-like movie of this scale, but it came with giant plot holes, inconsistencies, factual and historical inaccuracies. Leading lady Carice van Houten is celebrated as the best Dutch actress of this time and she has landed supporting roles in Hollywood, but again, I don't think she's anything special. Not bad, but not extraordinary either.

Basic Instinct (1992)
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I have yet to watch it.

Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange) (1977)- 8.5
Verhoeven's best and one of the best Dutch movies of all time. An old-fashioned World War II movie, it stars Rutger Hauer ('Blade Runner', 'The Hitcher') as the real-life Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, a well to-do student who at first doesn't worry much about the pending war in Europe, but ends up as Queen Wilhelmina's personal adjutant, risking his life to fight the German occupiers. Ten times a better WWII movie as 'Black book'.

Turks Fruit (Turkish Delight) (1973)- 6
Probably still the most succesfull and celebrated Dutch movie (perhaps only 'Black book' rivals it), this cemented the succes of Verhoeven and leading actors Rutger Hauer and Monique van der Ven, who became megastars in Holland. Based on a famous novel by legendary writer Jan Wolkers, this bored me to pieces. Even the many, many, many (many!) explicit sex scenes couldn't save it --this being set in the 'hairy' 1970's.

The Exorcist (1973)
I turned this off pretty quickly. Not out of boredom or lack of interest, but because it was too much. Yes, I know I will live in infamy as a film scholar for admitting this, but it was too upsetting. I had convinced myself that it was "just a movie" and that you could see it was a bad puppet instead of a real girl, but whenever I watch a movie, I get so caught up in it... No, this was much too disturbing. I don't care if people will laugh at me for admitting this.

The French Connection (1971)
The only thing I remember about it, was that it was very boring and I turned it off after half an hour.

Oliver Stone:

World Trade Center (2006)- Saw this in theaters when it came out, but don't really remember much about it to give it a score despite how clear the events are to me in my memory. I do remember a family watching Ed, Edd, n' Eddy on a TV screen however. Being my favorite modern animated series, I found that kind of cool.
The Doors (1991)- Watched the first few minutes on VH1 Classic a few years back, had to stop since I had other plans. Considering how much I like The Doors, I've been wanting to sit through the whole thing. Maybe someday.
Platoon (1986)- 8.5 An effective war flick. Worthy of most of it's praise.

Tim Burton:

Alice in Wonderland (2010)- 2.5 I feel like quoting Roger Ebert's North review here, but I think I'll pass for now.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)- 10 Honestly, I love this film. I know that this may not be a popular opinion on here, but I don't care. Depp's bored performance was close to perfect, Helena Bonham Carter was cute, Alan Rickman was class as usual, and the rest was great as well. I'm not much for musicals, but I love it.
Corpse Bride (2005)- 8.5 Underrated. Not quite as good as Nightmare, but the soundtrack holds up to repeat viewings and the animation is stunning.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)- 7 Serviceable, but loses me at the end. I wasn't big on the original either, and this is about equal to me.
Big Fish (2003)- 8 A much-needed change of pace for Burton. Not a favorite, but I would like to see him try something like this again.
Ed Wood (1994)- 10 Classic
Batman Returns (1992)- Haven't seen in years
Edward Scissorhands (1990)- 5 I find this to be a joyless piece of trash, but I seem to be alone here

A Beautiful Mind (2001)- 5.5 Seen it twice. Bored me to tears both time.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)- 3 Is too bad, however.
Apollo 13 (1995)- 7.5 Not too bad. I got interested enough in the mission and Tom Hanks was great.

Quentin Tarantino:

Inglourious Basterds (2009)- 9 Imperfect, but I quite enjoyed it. Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz were GREAT, and the ending is epic.
Grindhouse: Death Proof (2007)- 6 The car chases are great, but the rest drags on even by Tarantino's standards. I'd give it a little push if the other girls died instead of Kurt Russell, but alas, that wasn't the case.
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)- 6 Eh. Giving both films an equal score. Never got into either one.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)- 6
Pulp Fiction (1994)- 10 I have about four or five films which I'd consider to be my favorites, and this is one of them. Like an orgy of the English language.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)- 9.5 Class act

David Fincher:

The Social Network (2010)- 8 Don't know about being Best Picture worthy, but the screenplay was definitely worth some praise.
Zodiac (2007)- 5 Is it just me, or was this basically a remake of Se7en? Just like that film, it did little for me
Fight Club (1999)- 8.5 Brad Pitt can be outstanding when he wants to, like in here. Completely made it about him, and it was, too!

Sam Raimi:

Spider-Man 3 (2007)- 4 As a fan of Spider-Man, I don't care for these movies much at all. To me, they take away the fun and scope of the original comics and replace them with more whining and hokey melodrama than what we got in them. There are worse comic book movies however and Raimi does seem to have a lot of fun with the direction, so I can't be too harsh on them.

Army of Darkness (1992)- 8.5 As a fan of horror, I love these movies. The first was a fine serious low-budget horror flick, while the sequel was a great comedic remake of the first and AOD was a really fun b-movie tribute.

Fun homage to the 50s sci-fi pics. A little too campy at times, Ed Wood had a better balance.

Pretty good conclusion to the set, even if not as good as the first.

Oliver Stone:


Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010)- 7.5
Not as good as the original, but still enjoyable. Michael Douglas is perfect as always, but this sequel focusses too much on the private life of LaBoeuf's character. Camerawork has significantly improved since the original.

South of the Border (2009)- 7
This grade is more due to its subject matter and noble intentions, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The documentary is about seven Latin-American presidents, who get purposefully misrepresented in the agenda-driven US media. Stone wants to counter that one-sided image, but the result is a bit messy. The overall film is too short, and too little time is spend on explaining what these presidents have accomplished that is so radically different from anything leaders from this region have done before. Too little of their tremendous results are showcased. Viewers who have not delved into these issues before will be left wondering just what it is that make these presidents so admirable

W. (2008)-
Haven't watched this one yet. After eight years of Bush, I wasn't ready for a movie about him. Neither was the public and that's why it flopped.

Nixon (1995)- 8.5
I almost started to feel sorry for Tricky Dick, and that's a sign the director did a good job, with a lot of help from Anthony Hopkins.

Natural Born Killers (1994)- 7.5
Stone's commentary on modern media, privy on sensation and violence is captured with a unique and fitting style.

JFK (1991)- 9
Very long and very dialogue-heavy ("talky"), but doesn't bore one single second. It's impressive how the overload on information presented has been worked into a coherent and suspenseful narrative. I realize this is a work of fiction, but I'll say this: Stone has his facts straight and builds a reconstruction that's far more convincing than the much discredited Warren Commission's report. I consider this the best explanation of the 1963 coup that got president Kennedy assassinated.

Born on the Fourth of July (1989)- 7.5
Impressive performance by Tom Cruise and shedding light on a subject -life of veterans after the war- that's remarkably often neglected in a country that's so obsessed with war.

Wall Street (1987)- 8
Perfect image of the 1980's zeitgeist of greed, materialism and Reaganomics, personified by iconic character Gordon Gekko, still Douglas' best role to date.

Platoon (1986)- 8.5
Gripping and shocking portrayal of the war Stone himself fought.

Salvador (1986)
Unfortunately, I still haven't seen this drama about the civil war in El Salvador in the 1980's, in which James Woods witnesses how the US chooses the side of the military rulers who turn against their own people.

Unpleasant subject, but very original, well-executed, brilliantly animated and with a strong voicecast.

Big Fish (2003)- 3
I turned this off after only half an hour, which is unique to me.

Pure entertainment, but no match to Nolan's version.

Intriguing, because I don't know whom to loathe more after watching this: Frost or Nixon.

The Da Vinci Code (2006)- 8.5
Yeah, really! I haven't read the book and didn't have high expectations when I first watched it; maybe that accounts for the higher-than-average rating. But I really, really liked this movie --but: the director's cut. I understand the theatrical version was much shorter, and I guess that would make it messier.

Cinderella Man (2005)- 7
Good, but average feel-good fare, in which no cliché isn't used.

The Missing (2003)- 6.5

A Beautiful Mind (2001)- 8
A bit too sappy at times, but otherwise very touching, especially because of Crowe's performance. Very smart and totally unexpected twist after roughly half an hour turns the film upside-down. And Jennifer Connelly! <3

Overrated. Too many gimmicks, too many things I've seen before in other, better films by Tarantino. Christoph Walz as Col. Landa is amazing, though.

Much less exciting than Part 1. Includes the most gruesome scene I've ever seen, involving Thurman taking out her opponent's eye. I had to look away.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)- 8.5
Fantastic revenge-movie! Over-the-top, ultra-violent, bloody, with a great role by Uma Thurman. Not the kind of movie I would normally like, but this is one good exception.

Jackie Brown (1997)- 6.5
Boring. The one Tarantino I don't really like.

Pulp Fiction (1994)- 9.5
Masterpiece! Cool characters, cool dialogue, cool action scenes: everything about it is cool!

Reservoir Dogs (1992)- 9
Short and sweet, memorable from the opening scene where they discusss Madonna's 'Like A Virgin', through the scene where Michael Madsen's cuts of the policeman's ear up until the end in which almost everybody dies.

A bit overrated. I have a love-hate relationship with it. When I first saw it, I thought it was ground-breaking, totally unique and both a good action movie and relevant social criticism combined. Now, I just think it's pretentious.

Fake ending upon fake ending without it getting boring.

Se7en (1995)- 8.5
Never has a serial killer movie been done better.

No on both questions. But if it gives people ideas and reminders, etc(.), that's good in my eyes. I just like seeing the opinions and I know at least one person looks forward to it (Kurosawa's coming, I promise you guys). Apart from that, I just don't know why. One thing's for sure, it's the first time opinions haven't been shocking. A little surprising, but not shocking. If you don't agree with someone, you can just post your own different opinion without having to address the other person. No debate. No pressure- best part.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (6.5/10) - I thought it was okay the first time. The visuals are great as always, but I prefer the Gene Wilder version more.

I'll give it a go with the first list. 1-10 rating only for the ones I've seen all the way through.

Brian DePalma:

Mission: Impossible (1996) - 6 - Decent action film, but the plot completely fell apart by end of it.
Body Double (1984) - 4 - Dated, dated, dated 80s thriller.
Scarface (1983) - 9 - When I saw this movie, I was shocked by how good it was. Highly entertaining and well-acted.
Carrie (1976) - 10 - One of my all-time favorites. Sissy Spacek's performance was amazing and the direction of the prom scene was stunning.
Phantom of the Paradise (1974) - 3 - Some nice moments of WTFery, but just not that entertaining
Greetings (1968) - 3 - Decent performance from DeNiro, but highly forgettable.

Martin Scorcese:

The Age of Innocence (1993) - 7 - A good, well-acted period piece, but emotionally uninvolving.

Stanley Kubrick:

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) - 6 - I wanted to like it more, but I just thought it was too clinical and detached for its own good.
Full Metal Jacket (1987) - 8 - A great Vietnam film. Some highly quotable lines.
A Clockwork Orange (1971) - 10 - another all-time favorite. Fantastic
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - 8 - SLOW beginning, but visually stunning and once the plot kicks in, riveting.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - 7 - I should love this movie, but I just don't for some reason. Obviously well-done and well-acted though.
Spartacus (1960) - 7 - One of the better Hollywood/Biblical epics, but still kinda slow-moving.

Francis Ford Coppola:

Jack (1996) - 2 - Ugh.
Dracula (1992) - 7 - Sure, Gary Oldman's performance goes WAY over the top. But I love the art direction and atmosphere enough to forgive that.
Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) - 7 - One of Kathleen Turner's best performances which is nearly ruined by one of Nicholas Cage's worst.
Apocalypse Now (1979) - 8 - Great movie, but Marlon Brando's appearance ruined the ending.
The Godfather: Part II (1974) - 10 - Total masterpiece worthy of all the praise it's ever gotten.
The Godfather (1972) - 9 - Classic, but surpassed by its sequel.

Woody Allen:

Mighty Aphrodite (1995) - 6 - Mediocre Allen, but not that bad.
Bullets Over Broadway (1994) - 7 - A cute comedy. Light and with good performances.
Annie Hall (1977) - 8 - A little overrated, but Diane Keaton's performance is very good.
Every Thing You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask (1972) - 7 - This is a decent movie, made great by the giant breast scene.

I've only seen one Martin Scorcese film all the way through? Really? I am ashamed of myself.
