As you guys can see, I was left sort of scratching my head after viewing this disc. I love the detail (and yes, the grain, too). The occasional speckles and flickering I can live with. But the darker color timing was jarring. It's possible the 2000 DVD was too bright and pale, but I think Disney went a bit too far in the opposite direction. It's hard to really tell because the film has always had a very soft focus look to it that sort blows the whites out. I'd like to know what Henry Selick thinks of this transfer.

For right now, I'm going to say it's a quasi upgrade since I was able to appreciate all sorts of details with the new HD transfer. I just can't help but think I would've noticed even more things had the image been brighter. I actually think the HD trailer for this seen on other Disney BDs looks better than this. Perhaps if I find the time tonight, I'll take screencaps of both for comparison's sake.

Given how slipshod the entire release is, I don't think they even bothered to consult him about it at all. Which is a real pity as James and the Giant Peach fairly screams director-involved Special Edition. It's my favorite of Selick's films.

I'll probably be heading out later today to see if I can find this any cheaper than $25 (That's how much Toys R Us is I heard) but if anybody beats me to town, feel free to share your findings!

After hearing the (somewhat) underwhelming reviews on the PQ of the Blu-Ray of this film, I might just hold out on buying it for a while (Plus, I am kind of strapped for cash).

Where did you hear it was $25? The cashier charged me $29.99 and I even asked and he said it is full price - no sale. I would love to hear other people finding it cheaper so I can bring it back and save $5.

Toys R Us IS $29.99. Almost everybody wants around $30 except Best Buy who have it for $26.99 ($24.99 @ BB.com). I'm not that big a fan & they made the decision to pass on it easier.

That's what I did too.

Technically you're paying $14.99 since you're putting in $5 for the BatB preorder but you'll get that money back when you pick up Beauty.

With regards to aspect ratio:

Did anyone else notice that on the new transfer (1.66:1) there is the text on the back of the box:

"This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit your TV."

First....I'm suprised that anyone nowadays it even bothering to re-edit films from their original version. EVERY other studio offers them in their OAR. Without getting too vocal on my OAR soapbox, all I can say is that this is a major disappointment for me and I sincerely hope that Disney does not start changing all of their open matte transfers to 1.66:1 transfers.

On the other hand, at least they are printing this info on the box and not trying to pass it off as the way the picture was meant to be seen.......

^I think it's a fluke, seeing as there are no 1.66 tvs anyway.

Maybe, maybe not. The trailer for The Lion King Diamond Edition shows it in 1.66:1 like the DVD, so the BD might do the same thing.

Just picked up my copy today and the only thing (besides the obvious grainy picture) that bothers me is how they did the sneak peeks. There is no menu for the previews, you have to view them all, you can't just choose one to watch. It takes forever to load when you have to keep hitting the skip forward button, and the back button doesn't seem to work on my player (at least for this movie it doesn't).

The back button didn't work for me either, atleast when I tried to rewatch The Lion King trailer it wouldn't let me.

it's the way the disc's encoded. For Disney films, the back button wont on BDs.

The songs in this movie are hooorrribllle and uncatchy - the film it'self is quite charming...however I don't understand the high markup for such a niche title.
