No, seriously ... don't you think The Matrix (and its sequels) is actually an action film that
isn't missing the brains? Actually, it's not an action film. It's a dracller (drama/action/thriller) film! See, it has substance!
Only in its' technology and scope of fantasy, did it have brains. But any book can come up with a ton of ideas. A film has to function on a basis of character, and acting is important to. The audience has to like somebody in the movie. If I could have played any part in this story, a part of my choice - I would be God, and I would drop a bomb in the beginning- making everything explode. Because I didn't like a single character in the movie, and it was all noise and special effects. Like Armageddon, only with more CGI and engines... and
battle scenes. It was worse than boring - it was completely irritating!
Julian Carter wrote:For me, it'd be The Silence of the Lambs, which I saw for the first time a few days ago. The best thing in it is Anthony Hopkins' chilling performance. However, not even Anthony Hopkins can make up for an uninspired story which (not very helpfully) is told in a very confusing manner.
Oh, and Jodie Foster please SPEAK UP! How the hell am I supposed to know what's happening if I can't understand a word you're saying!? I was entirely lost for the first 30 minutes of the film, thanks to Foster's indiscernible mumbling.
And this film beat Beauty and the Beast for the Best Picture Oscar? What were the Academy members thinking!? I don't give a sh*t if BatB is much simpler (a point some UD members raised when debating which film should have won the Oscar). At least that film is simple but perfectly executed.
That is, NO OFFENSE to you, one of the most nauseating, sickening things I have ever read.
The Silence of the Lambs is one of the greatest films I have ever had the extreme pleasure of viewing. It is a masterpiece in every single way, shape, and form a movie can be. It is one of the most powerful films in the history of cinema itself. It is a thoroughly fascinating and complex journey into the psyche of the serial killer, it thought-provokingly comments on women's roles in law enforcement, and single-handedly
redefined the entire concept of a female lead / heroine in a movie. It's non-pretentious, the performances are not just strong - but shatteringly powerful. It's disturbing, its' intelligence is vastly superior to Beauty and the Beast's (which forces Belle into the role of a slave, while she's only allowed a cosmetic amount of displeased commentary on the story's sexism), it's forcefully directed to within an inch of what's left of the celluloid medium. Every scene in the film is filled to the brim with serious truth and integrity for its' audience.
And honestly, you can say that and wonder why people would hate The Matrix??

Wow. Glad to see my posts are stirring up some discussion,
Laz.
I don't really have time to type much (it's 0:14 am) but in my defence, I at least have Gene Siskel on my side regarding
Silence of the Lambs. And yes, I know you think he's a total jerk, Laz.
See you tomorrow. Good night!
Hey, you don't hate me do you? I mean, your "That is, NO OFFENCE to you, one of the most nauseating, sickening things I have ever read." line made me feel like I'd just commited some irredeemable crime against cinema ... and Ms. Foster.

Let me guess. I haven't convinced anyone, have I?
Hey, I'm with you on that one! I'm a big Matrix fan too. Granted, I haven't seen the second or third ones... just the first

(Yes, I do own the uber-10 disc collector's set DVDs, I just haven't gotten a chance to watch them)
On the note of sci-fi films, I'm actually surprised no one mentioned Star Wars. I'm a big Star Wars fan myself, but seeing as how half the forum seems to enjoy disagreeing with me...

If I had a dime for every time that I've said that to someone... I
might have over a buck.

For me, the only one that comes to mind is Gone With The Wind. I know it's regarded as a great masterpiece, but I just can't get into it. The acting is very good, and the set design is top notch, but I just can't get engaged in the story no matter how much I try. Also, I'm baffled how this is so widely accepted, yet Song of the South can't get a release.

Can we not use "ROX"?
Pretty please?

I love it to bits, but I must agree with you. Considering this movie the peak of Disney's animated movies is giving it wee-bit too much credit.
As for discussion over The Dark Knight; I will tell you this. I admire this movie. It is one of my personal favorites but I will admit that some time around early August hype by fanboys started spiraling way out of control. But here is where I think people started judging this movie unfairly. Much like Titanic, the enormous commercial success almost started irritating people so for movie fans it became much easier and more enjoyable to just diss this movie completely instead of giving some middle-grounded opinions. I feel this movie has fallen, much like Titanic, into the it's-so-overrated-it-has-become-underrated-by-most syndrome.
As for my list of overrated. Hang on to your hats kids, because some of you may start exploding when reading this:
- The original Star Wars Trilogy
Jaws
Indiana Jones (as a franchise)
Iron Man
The Pianist
Crash
The Matrix
The Lion King
Monsters, Inc.
Any Burton movie (especially Sweeney Todd)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Breakfast Club
Cinderella
101 Dalmations
That should irritate people enough for now.

I might have to take you up on that particular offer, Gol. You were arguing with me about this movie not 2 weeks ago. Now you're saying that you don't care - that you didn't think the movie was hot stuff either?? That little detail was conveniently left out of all your replies.
I hope you had fun with that because I am officially not speaking to you ever again. I know - why should I
reward you for being a cad? I'm just generous that way.

The ones in bold I agree with, and thank you for saying Star was because I didn't have the guts to say it (I don't want to get raped by fanboys).
As for Lion King, lot's of people here seem to think it's overrated, so it's no surprise to see it on your list.
Any Burton film? Sounds a bit harsh but I know his style is not for everyone.
I still love Sweeney, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow and Nightmare Before X-Mas regardless.
Indy 4 wasn't very good, and the first one doesn't live up to the hype I agree (still fun, just not spectacular, love Temple of Doom and Last Crusade though).
The Breakfast Club? Don't tell Scaps you said that.
Cinderella and 101 Dalmatians? Now your just trying to destroy my childhood.
Can't comment on others.

Crash
Juno
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Juno
2001: A Space Odyssey
Juno
Spider-Man 2
Juno
Fargo
Juno
Across the Universe (does this count? It got pretty critically mauled, so I guess I'm saying this based on the fan base)
Juno
Twilight (Ditto with the obnoxious fan base)
Juno
Little Miss Sunshine
Juno
Oh, and I don't know if I mentioned "Juno", but I found that to be a wee bit overrated. Some of the films, like "Spider-Man 2", I still like, but thought it was nowhere near as good as everyone made it out to be. Actually, the other movies on that list I pretty much don't care for at all. I'm still in shock that "Crash" won the Oscar, when it was like, the least original, most trite film I've seen in ages. And "Juno" for screenwriting? Get real.
I'm confounded by whomever said "Silence of the Lambs" is overrated. Every time I watch that movie, I'm continually impressed with how cleverly made it is. There's just so much to love. I guess if you're not into thriller-type movies it might not be your thing, but it's still an excellently-crafted movie.
I guess I can get "Star Wars", if space fantasy's not your thing. I'll disagree with the prequels being generally weaker, especially "Attack of the Clones", but I think "The Phantom Menace" has a fairly undeserved reputation for being worse than it is, and "Revenge of the Sith" was pretty good all around. However, I cannot date anyone who dislikes "Star Wars". Flangy, it would never work out between us.

That proves again you didn't read my replies but went straight ahead to the part where you could insult me.

I have claimed time after time I did not care for the movie.

Again: THANKS! I guess people thought: hey, it deals with racism! And it has different storylines that become connected! So it *must* be good!

Also heavily overrated: The unbearable lightness of being.
Watching this drivel was unbearable.
Also The pianist and Schindler's List.
Yes, you've read that correctly!

I like Star Tours if that helps.
Actually I haven't watched the original trilogy in ages as I either have to choose between watching them in their "special" versions or pan and scanned. Don't like either so I have not watched the films in a long time so my opinion on them is very ill defined (but I know to me it's no crushing loss that I don't see them). However, I still feel their overrated thanks to the frightening fan-base it has created and the hype that has surrounded it. As long as your not some hideous Fan Boy type character I would still wub you Brendon, regardless.

Well, fanboy? I mean...
I don't know. I've dressed up for two of three midnight premieres of prequels. I've been characters for Halloween more times than I can count. I know enough basic phrases in Huttese to survive for a while on Varl, Nal Hutta, Tatooine or Coruscant. I can identify any creature from any given populated scene in the cantina, Jabba's palace, or the Galactic Senate. I quote Star Wars on a fairly regular basis. I think watching "The Empire Strikes Back" with my boyfriend is a romantic time. I call my year-end holiday celebration "Life Day" after the Wookiee holiday in the much-maligned "Star Wars Holiday Special", which I own on DVD and watch annually. My roommate in the kitchen just mentioned C-3PO and I got excited. I keep my vast collection of Star Wars figures like so:
And that's like, two years old, so I have even more now. Every time I go to Toys "R" Us, Target, Wal-Mart or the like, I must check the supply of figures to see if any ones there tickle my fancy.
But, uh fan boy? I dunno. You make the call.
