I'll be making SNOW WHITE screen capture comparisons eventually, and making more of PINOCCHIO that are hopefully more accurate. The 1987 theatrical restoration of SNOW WHITE was vivid and looked great - except for all the cel dirt. That was photographed and mostly hidden by the soft Technicolor printing of the day - but it resurfaced in the restoration. The 1993 theatrical reissue was an entirely digital restoration, and it removed all of the cel dirt and dust. The colors were toned way down as well. These digital files were used to make the 2001 DVD.

The video transfer of SNOW WHITE in 1994 and PINOCCHIO in 1993 look NOTHING alike at all, and this proposed over redness of SNOW WHITE on its initial video release is absurd. I'll make screen captures to prove it - once I'm caught up, that is.

We don't have to share the same opinion, you are right.
But I do think you're messing things up.

That's what I think! But you turn things around.
It's all the other things that make atmosphere for me as I mentioned earlier (way of photography of the cells, etc, etc). That's all gone in the new restorations.

As I've said before, the candle screenshot just doesn't work in the 2003 dvd. It's too flat, I don't believe the lighting, the candle, the glow on the walls, etc.

And I wonder, what do you think of restorations like "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" and "Cinderella"? They made the colors extremely bright and vivid in those releases. AND they removed everything else I was talking about so there's no atmosphere left.

It's true, some releases, for example one of the Pinocchio releases look a bit red-ish. But that's nothing compared to what they did in the 2003 dvd.
In general, what they do with the new restorations, is making the movies flat, empty, crisp, bright, vivid, childish, like looking at the cell, so no atmosphere of the look of photography of the cells, it looks dead to me really.

I have an older Snowwhite release that looks stunning. Much better than the overly bright and vivid 2001 release.
I can't stand the scene on the 2001 dvd where Snowwhite opens the door of the cottage for the witch. Snowwhite looks like she's from plastic/rubber, as if she's behind glass or something. It's like there is some "layer" over the movie. Same thing happens in all the other restorations. For example "Part of your world" in the Little Mermaid.

Okay, I'm done talking to both of you about that because it's obvious we will never agree on the subject

One more thing though. Again ror the 3rd time, Marky_198, why would you say, "What they do with the new restorations, is making the movies flat, empty, crisp, bright, vivid, childish, like looking at the cell, so no atmosphere of the look of photography of the cells, it looks dead to me really" as we can see that for Pinocchio, it's the other way around: the vivid, childish and bright transfers are the oldest ones, whereas the 2003 restoration looks the opposite to what you're describing.

Agai, I agree with that statement on some cases though, like Cinderella where I totally get what you're saying about the childiness, vividness and brightness of the new restoration, but not Pinocchio!

drsd2kill: About Snow White, (re)watch the featurette on the restoration and you'll see that Disney was saying that the 1987 restoration was a big mess!

It's not about the brightness of the colors.

It's about all those other things I mentioned.
And yes, the colors do change with all the restorations (including Pinocchio) and they don't necessarily become brighter.
All the colored patches just look flat, dull, simple and childish.
Because of what they do with the cells now, the way they color things in and the computers they use. The characters look like they're made of a different material now.
