Been a bit slow on the DVD buying lately, as well as posting things for that matter. The main reason is that I've moved into a new flat with my girlfriend, and we've had a few other expenses (including a new shiny TV to watch our DVDs on).

However, I did buy some DVDs last week. There was Doctor Who - Series 1 (2005), repackaged in a new slimline box. Yes, I already had the vanilla releases (which I admittedly got as free review discs) AND the TARDIS boxset, but it was too hard to resist the lure of a new shiny box. My justification is that it will match the Series 2 box later this year.

I also bought Beastie Boys - Awesome, I ****** Shot That. There have been a lot of concert DVDs that have tried to give the 'audience eye view', with some more successful than others. Usually they fail. However, thanks to some phenomenal editing, using footage from the 50 audience cameras on the night, this is definitely one of the strongest concert films I have seen. Memories of seeing them on the Sydney leg of the same tour came flooding back instantly, and almost all classic hits are accounted for. Great stuff.

I also got a stack of review discs that I'm very slowly making my way through, largely anime and cult cinema. They include (links to my reviews included where appropriate):

Since my last post, sometime ago, the following have been aquired (and probably a few more, but... I can't remember since my last post).



The Eurovision Song Contest 2006 2 Disc Set R2 PAL
including the Semi-Finals and the Final. Say what you will, but Greece certainly put on a pair of good shows. The opening "Eurovison's Greatest Hits" medley of the semi-finals is fantastic.


KY-TV Series 1 R2 PAL
Not quite as good as I remembered it, but still a fine purchase. A spoof on the early days of Sky TV and BSB. Of course British Sky Broadcasting has changed so much over the past decade, it's mostly irrelevant now. But how can anyone not love a show with characters called Mike Channel, Mike Flex and Anna Dapter? Includes the Comic Asides pilot.


Doctor Who Series 2 Vol 4 R2 PAL
The new series releases (barebones) continue with The Impossible Planet, The Satan Pit and the love-it-or-hate-it Love & Monsters!


V For Vendetta HMV Exclusive 2 Disc Set w/ Book R2 PAL
The covers wrong, because I got the 2 disc set, which is only available from HMV. It also came with a book containing the first 9 chapters of the graphic novel.


The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. Complete Series R1 NTSC

The Comeback: The Complete Only Series R1 NTSC
Ever since I first heard about this, I've wanted to see it. I hear one of the theories of it not being popular in the US is the character was too unlikeable and too much of a looser. Sounds like ideal British humour to me!


Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room R1 NTSC
I'm sure this documentary will be a real eye-opener!


Bill Maher: New Rules R1 NTSC
I watched this last night. All I can say, its a example of a performer who's absolutely at the top of his game. It seems short at only 45 mins, but the extras bump the runtime up by another half-hour or so, making it the same runtime as most animated movies.

Yes, I know, wrong cover. But I can't find a S4 cover the correct size. Anyhow, I got this, but I haven't finished with S2 yet!


Curb Your Enthusiasm The Complete Fifth Series R1 NTSC
I must admit, I thought S4 started to loose some of its edge and appeal. But I still got this. But maybe, like most British shows, Larry David should quit while still ahead?


A Pub Named Scooby-Doo V3&V4 R1 NTSC
Hey, it is Scooby-Doo and it's not as bad as it could be. Sadly, it's not great either. But light years ahead of some of the rubbish released under the Scooby-Doo banner.


Doogal R1 NTSC
Well, I had an obsession about comparing the US redubbed and rewritten film to the UK Magic Roundabout. I'm not impressed, but they hardly had Shakespere to work with in the first place. Watching it again on my PC, I'm actually more impressed with the animation than I was on first viewing. Its really not as cheap as people make out.


Animaniacs Vol 1 & Pinky and the Brain Vol 1 R1 NTSC
Well, I'm sure I don't need to comment on the contents of these. However, I am disappointed by the softness of the picture on the first Animaniacs disc. It really should be better - the Hanna Barbera collection releases of much older and cruder material also from Warners are.

Blackadder Series 1 (or should that be "The Black Adder" or "Blackadder I"? R2 PAL
Not a scrap of bonus features unfortunately . Even though I've only seen series 2-4, I still thought I'd plum for Series 1 first.


Acorn Antiques R2 PAL
A complete collection of Victoria Woods sketches. Acorn Antiques was a feaux soap opera where everything went wrong. The sets would wobble, the actors would forget their lines, props would malfunction, people would come on at the wrong cue, the camera would be in the wrong position and the story lines were either completely over the top, with memory loss and people finding out they were long lost twins, to the ridiculously mundane such as the highlight of an episode being a character getting a new tray.
The show directly poked fun at a real British soap opera called "Crossroads" which was broadcast live! So things would go wrong, actors would forget their lines and drop things on live TV, so they couldn't retake and had to carry on, hence the inspiration for Acorn Antiques. The show created a legendary charcter called Mrs Overall, (played by Julie Walters) who believed everything in life could be solved with a cup of tea!

Acorn Antiques: The Musical R2 PAL
Even though Acorn Antiques was originally shown in the 1980s, the show left such a long lasting impact that in 2005 the show was revived as a West End musical reuniting the original cast, which was very well received by both critics and audiences.

All I can say after watching this, is that this is perhaps the greatest musical I have ever seen! Absolutely hilarious with brilliant songs! Although what else would you expect from Victoria Wood!

I think the actual disc is the same, but I get a shiny black and red tin to go with it. Excessive? Given I didn't like the film THAT much, probably. But my girlfriend did, and it will probably look good on my new TV.


Tegan and Sara - It's Not Fun. Don't Do It! R0 PAL
This live Tegan and Sara DVD, of the Canadian folk-pop twins, is quite a groovy little puppy. It also has 5 of their music videos, a couple of which I hadn't see before, some short films and a commentary from the girls. I've seen them live twice now, and while nothing compares to that, this is a pretty nice reminder.

I bought King of the Hill: Season 1 and King of the Hill: Season 2 today, and rented some Disney movies from the library, including Home on the Range which I'll probably watch tonight.

Went to Sam's Club and found a pleasent surprise: Both Inside Man and The Interpreter in a DVD 2Pack for $19.77, a damn good price, considering the former was available by itself for the same price.
