So after much reading I dug out my book I bought a couple years ago called "The Gospel According To Disney". Here's what the author had to say about the whole Sunflower issue.


In subsequent theatrical rerelease, offensive images of black female centaurs with braided, "pickanniny" hair, shining the hooves and tails of white centaurs, were removed. The cutting was done in 1990 by Disney animator John Carnochan, according to a story in the Long Beach Press-Telegram of Nov. 28, 1991. "It's kind of appalling to me that these stereotypes were ever put in" he said.


So there you have it, I think that they could have left the scene in, alot of the time kids don't really notice or undertand that a certain character is being stereotyped. But they also didn't want to offend viewers with the character, in any case they could have changed the character and the scene be less offensive and include it in a dvd release as a deleted scene. But if I remeber correctly weren't there Centaurs with Zebra bodies, and the top of the body African American?

But honestly what kid is gonna want to see this movie? I personally would love to see it. I think it's aimed mainly for a mature and older audience who will have appreciation for the music and ofcourse it's Art.

I think what turns kids off of Fantasia is the fact that theres no plot, or main point to it, and it's all about bringing classical music to animation in an artistic perspective. My sister Jessica can't sit through one or two segments of it at most, and even I have a little bit of trouble paying attention somtimes. But once Mickey's on screen the kids pay attention and as soon as he's gone their attention is gone too.

With Fantasia Walt did something he wanted to do, something according to his own vision. But "the people" didn't really go for it. It's probably never going to be a kids' favourite, so hopefully Disney will come to their senses and make it a complete "original" version eventually...

I do. In fact, what kid wouldn't want to see this WONDERFUL movie? I'm only 14, & I love every second of my all time favorite movie.

I agree with you Sequel. And although I'm not really a kid anymore, when I was I really did (and still do!) enjoy this film! (But I think the reason is that I'm an extremely visual person, and that's almost all of what Fantasia is: visual beauty). I also play several musical instruments, so I also appreciate the musicianship put into the film. To this day, Fantasia remains my all time favorite Disney movie (and possibly one of my favorite movies period), but it's tied with 3 others as my definitive favorites: Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and The Jungle Book.

Anway, back to when I was a kid, yes, I really enjoyed this film. There were parts that I remember being slightly bored with (such as when the white fish swims around...you know which part I'm talking about??). But, I remember more fondly how I would physically dance to the music of Fantasia- specifically to the Nutcracker Suite songs. I really got into this movie when I was little. But I guess that makes me a rarity.

When I was a kid I honestly remember enjoying the film, but I also remember all the rest of the class not being into it. So you guys and myself are one of those rare kids that did like it. I'm 19 yrs old now, so I'll be an adult soon, but I really do like this movie. I think the reason I also liked it was because I want to be an animator since I was 5 and I have always had a special appreciation for Disney films, in a way I look up to those animators.

I began rereading these posts the other day and it got me to thinking about my 'Taiwan' DVD of "Fantasia" that I got from e-Bay many, many years ago.

Guess what? After playing it from the beginning, I have a complete "Fantasia" with the centaurs and everything. It runs a total of 125 minutes and 39 seconds. So I guess that I am not going to just trash this DVD after all. It is in Dolby Digital and the picture is as good as, if not better, than the most recent Disney release of the movie. I think I will keep this, now.

Yes, Lars, it is a "complete" version of "Fantasia".

WOW..i'm in shock! Could you possibly post screencaps of the "questionable" scenes? (I'm curious as to the quality of the cut scenes, when compared to the rest of the DVD). All that's left to say is, I'M VERY JEALOUS THAT YOU HAVE AN UNCUT VERSION!

If I knew what a screen cap was, or how to do it, I would be glad to. Remember I am a computer rookie and I don't know if my computer can do any of that which you are asking.

Basically it’s a photo you take of the movie. If you have a DVD player program on your computer it should have some sort of "take a picture of current frame" option.

I can't play DVD movies on my computer, so I guess I don't have that feature. Who watched movies on a computer anyway? That is how far behind I am in this technology.

My wife and I were in North Jersey last weekend and we saw a black lady who had the "pickanniny" hair. Its sort of funny that those images are considered offensive even thought there are people who still wear their hair like that today.

I actually watch movies on the computer all the time. At least, when it comes to Disney movies. Usually when my parents spotted me watching Disney movies on the TV, they would start picking on me, and such. I just got sick of it. So now I pretty much watch movies on the computer.

Very interesting. We've seen single still images here and there already numerous times. I'd say it's time to start looking for that specific "Taiwan" release...

Just a word of unfounded caution. 3.99 with free shipping? seems a little too good to be true. Especially with the SotS claim as well. It could be legit, but I don't know.
