And DVD's are not easy to take care of. You could practically beat up a VHS and it would still last. Try telling a little preschooler with sticky fingers to handle the disc with care...

So there's my rant. Wow, DVD's have booming sound and a more accurate ratio. But I personally do not find them worth the extra $5 any more.

Have you considered buying a widescreen TV? I can't see how anyone would prefer pan & scan VHS to anamorphic widescreen DVD shown on a properly hooked up 16:9 set... the difference is worlds apart... maybe it's time for you to upgrade.

While I do feel kind of sad watching VHS and VCRs die out, I knew this was coming. One of the reasons why my family bought a DVD player was simply because videocassettes were becoming incredibly hard to find.

I grew up watching videotapes of Disney films and I still have them. So in a way, I am now feeling old and I am one of the youngest people here.

RIP VCRs and VHS.

i m with you on that i mean i dont care if its in the oar I like a full picture on the screan i mean a little bit of side picture being gone i could care less about i just want the movie and to be able to enjoy it i mean i have a big enough tv its ridiculouse so go out and buy a new one to fit *widescrean* i mean i v had my tv maybe 3 yrs. so i like the pan and scan or whatever its called i mean when you can't see as well you appreciate just being able to see it and some of you guys just take this widescrean thing so freakin far be glad you have good sight and i m not complaining i m happy god has given me what i got i m just saying maybe you guys should be apprecitive and not nit pick at everything just my 2cents

Why do people keep bringing sight into this? If you people insist on watching widescreen movies on 4:3 TVs then I have no sympathy... upgrade your TV to a 16:9 model... or get a DVD player with a zoom function which will enable you to pan & scan yourself!

There is a total lack of education here about the difference between 4:3 and 16x9, and of course the difference between Widescreen and Full Screen (Pan and Scan) movies.

I think those who make such foolish statements that they don't care they just want the picture to fill the screen are missing so much. Don't you know what you are missing? Do you go to the movie theater, and then when you watch the same movie on your television, can't you tell the difference and how much picture you are missing?

This is where Deathiemouse would jump and tell you that you need to upgrade your television to a 16x9 so you can take full advantage of what is offered to you on DVD. I will not get into the techno-funk about different aspect raios and such, just upgrade your television and read your instruction manual that comes with it and read the manual that came with your DVD player, set everything up correctly and you won't have any trouble seeing the picture.

It is such a waste of money to buy Full Screen DVD's when you can make the small investment and get the more modern television.

Well, I guess there's no point in trying to collect all the Harry Potter Videos now. Warner Brothers probably won't even release 4-7.

Those who have "problems" with the "black bars" should understand that even though a 16:9 TV screen will eliminate "black bars" from a movie in a similar aspect ratio (AR), there are still going to be "black bars" on the same TV screen when playing a DVD in a different AR.

Therefore, no single TV screen (4:3 or 16:9) is going to solve the problem once and for all for those people who still worry about "black bars" and first and foremost care about filling the screen. But, admittedly, 16:9 is the better compromise/average for most movies today.

Myself, I'm quite happy with my 4:3. Probably half of my movies fit nicely into that frame.

my school (now that i'm going to high school ) just got a few DVD players but still used the VCRs and really bad (ie not working/very bad picture) TVs .

I m not going to take offense to who ever said the thing about not bringing sight into i was just stating something that FOR ME full screan is better and i do have a big tv it still doesn't solve the problem so what i was saying is i dont mind full screan i personally prefer it and thats my thing i mean everyone can disagree and want widescrean all they want i m just glad dvds are released in both forms. so that people can choose. and in a way it is sad thet vhs is dying b/c i didnt have that problem with tapes but i do love dvds they are easier to store and the movie lasts so much longer and i do love bonus features so if I did step on anyone s toes i do apologize ok? have a nice day guys

That's simular to my story. My math teacher had a DVD player but every other teacher I've ever had uses VCRs. And yet alot of times they don't even work. Why can't they replace them with DVD palyers?

In a way, I really hope VHS's stay around for awhile. I'm not as impressed with the DVD format as others. Yes, I do have a collection of about 150 DVDs, but DVD just isn't as serious or as great as it's always been heiled. I just know that for all the VHS and DVD's that I have, I can count of my VHS's to work longer and better than DVDs. And I have had so many interesting problems with DVD. At least with VHS, you don't have things skipping and pausing on it's own. VHS players weren't always as tempermental as DVD players. Sure now a lot of new VHS players eat tapes, but I have a great one now and like I've always had, my VHS's play far more reliably than DVD's. Plus, now with this new DVD thing, DVD's go so out of print too fast.

I mean, Mrs. Doubtfire! That DVD has gone out of print in both Widescreen and Fullscreen, to buy that now is like $40 for either format, Wide or Full. But you could and can always get a VHS copy and not for a price that will put you in the poorhouse either. It's cheaper to have a great VHS collection than a DVD collection. Plus, with VHS going out, how in the living hell are people supposed to watch the movies that aren't out on DVD yet? Or VHS's that are uncut where the DVDs are edited? Now, VHS editions of almost every movie and/or video program will go up to prices unheard of! I mean, the only reason I have a Disney VHS collection now, the one I'm very proud of, is because DVD made the severely out of print VHS's cheap enough for me to buy.

Why is everyone so hott to make sure that no one can own these Disney movies on any format, just because the version they want isn't on DVD yet? Anyway, that's my rant. This is just going to be bad for all involved, really. VHS's will not go down in price, they will be like laserdiscs now, if there are any you could buy, even on like Ebay... They will cost you an arm and a leg. Yes DVD is capable of a lot, but it won't be worth it if companies are too willing to cut corners. At least with VHS's still somewhat available, we still have SOME choice.

And by the way, why is everyone still so happy and crazy about new movies? This is only making it easier for DVD companies to take dirty-advantage of consumers. For instance, movies that are put out in crappy editions that you have to have...but a better edition is on it's way for the future. Get it for VHS! At least with it still available and all, you don't have to pay twice the prices these companies want to squeeze out. People are putting too much faith in DVD to do everything it can, when the companies don't care about how people want their movies, they will do what's in the interest of their greatest profits. Which is to make people buy a zillion different editions. People here were complaining about Uncut and Edited editions of movies released separately...well this is what's going to happen with everything when VHS is erased. Not Uncut and edited for every movie, but we're talking multiple releases fans of the movie feel they must have because of what might amount to be the SLIGHTEST difference.

I have experienced problems here and there with DVDs, but very few. Skipping or other problems are usually solved by dusting off the disc.

If you have a lot of problems playing DVDs, I'd like to ask: Have you got a (somewhat) good DVD player? A DVD player can be had for very little money these days, so I'd imagine that some of those aren't worth much. Just a thought.

Right now, I have a very good DVD player. But I've gone through 4 different players and they are very tempermental. Especially when viewing extras.

I've had only one, a DVD/LD combination. I've had it for five years. Only one in five years! It did cost quite a bit, but it has been good all the way. So I'm pretty sure the price and quality of the player is important for your DVD experience.

Well Justin Middle Schools and High Schools don't get enough fundings for VCR (to get fix) or DVD's.
Most of the fundings(taxes) goes to colleges or rich schools.

As much as I like DVD, it saddens me to know VHS is being pronounced dead.... I grew up on VHS, it's kind of like losing an annoying member of the family. I'm going to try and collect as many VHS as possible. I mean, you walk into F.Y.E. or Sam Goody and they have a bunch of em for $4.00. Besides, keep em unopened and maybe in a few years they'll be worth something.

I don't use my VCR to watch movies anymore. I just use it to tape tv programs when I'm to busy to watch them. I'm too cheap for TiVo. =)
