I think she gave a great performance, but her chemistry with Depp gets mixed reaction from me. As actors, Penelope and Johnny have great chemistry. As characters, Angelica and Jack felt awkward around each other. I think that awkwardness actually worked for the better, it helps establish that their previous relationship wasn't "moonlight and roses", and that Jack is truly incapable of having such a serious relationship anyway. In addition, the awkward chemistry helps build up their own non-trust in each other as well.
If you guys do a POTC5, I wanna know what happens with Philip and Syrena. I enjoyed their smaller story more than the Jack/Angelica one.

I quite agree! And it was interestingly almost completly removed from the Jack/Angelica one. I am anxious for more Pirates after seeing this movie. Bring it on.

Totally disagree with this and having any other Will/Elizabeth like combination in any future Pirate movies.

I'm hoping they'll at least explain on the commentary.

Aw, Wire.
I like Philip and Syrena. They're different from Will & Elizabeth, and I think their storyline has a lot of potential.
To borrow something I wrote on facebook, both are characters who are directly and solely embodying the side of "good". Neither ever waver from their position (and Philip as a missionary introduces a whole new religious/spiritual aspect to the whole film, but that would take too long for me to discuss). While that is a storytelling no-no (keeping good characters strictly good), it is also a refreshing change from the duplicitous nature of every other character in all four films. I liked that there were good guys who are intentionally made to be good guys, and they were worth rooting for.
Sunny Wing wrote:I'm hoping they'll at least explain on the commentary.
I hope there is a commentary.
And I hope there is a making-of documentary that is at least 45-60 minutes long. And by documentary, I mean documentary, not a play-all option for 5 individual fluff-pieces of "OMG, it was great working with Rob Marshall" and "Johnny Depp is a god".
And I hope there will be "Fly on the Wall" featurettes like the ones they did for
Curse of the Black Pearl.
And I hope for, but know I won't get, the trailers.
And for completeness' sake, give us some deleted scenes and a blooper reel.
But most of all, I hope that the amount of supplementary features are equal on both the two-disc DVD and the two-disc Blu-Ray. Simply so that we don't have to hear comments like "DVD owners get the shaft again!" and "Upgrade, you fools!".

Aw. I tend to forget that commentaries are optional on these things.

I could have done without them and reading posts, reviews and V-logs elsewhere I saw the couple was a common complaint. While the two advanced the plot like Will and Liz in the other movies, their romance took away from the other characters.
Some of us just prefer not to have some preachy (literally in this case) mushy love in our pirate movies.

If anyone deserves more romantic development it's Jack. It's off to a good start and after what he went through in the last 4 movies he could use a hug.
As for finding out what happened, I'm sure given the evidence in the film they stayed together and Philip did not have his face chewed off.

You'll have to get in line.
As for the next
Pirates (if there is one) I think Philip and Serena's storyline should be minimal, if there at all. But Jack certainly shouldn't have a love interest, Jack doesn't need or want one.
As for the DVD release, please Disney,
please don't screw over the people buying DVDs. Please. I want an audio commentary, bloopers, a Serena/Philip explanation, documentary, a segment on the mermaids, deleted scenes.... Am I being too greedy?

No. I want a 2 disc DVD for this film. At the very least, a single disc that had as many extras as the "Toy Story 3" DVD did. While I have started to buy some Blu Rays when it comes to the animation side of Disney, I will NOT be buying this one on Blu Ray. So, whatever extras the DVD doesn't get, I'll just go without and I'm ok with that. That said, the more extras they put on the DVD, the happier I'll be!

Here is a fun story about the real thing that just happens to have great timing to coincide with this movie:

Well I finally saw it.
I quite liked this film. It kept me engaged the entire time. I liked it better than At World's End and it definitely felt more like the first film than the two sequels.
There was one thing I didn't get though. And here be spoilers: Why did Syrena go to the fountain to help Jack? What did she owe him? Was it just about seeing to it that her tear was not wasted?

Saw it for a second time today, and I enjoyed it much more than the first time.
** SPOILERS **
PatrickvD wrote:Why did Syrena go to the fountain to help Jack? What did she owe him? Was it just about seeing to it that her tear was not wasted?
That's one of the three things I'm confused about. Number one, did Serena save or kill Philip? Number two, is there some special way that Serena got from that pool to the Fountain, or is it just a plot hole? And number three, why did she go?

I think changing your font colour to white instead of writing **spoiler** is more effective. Especially since it seems that your **spoiler** is the quote, and the thing below isn't a spoiler.
Anyhow I doubt Syrena killed him, thought I did wonder that. But 1) she was happy the first time he came back, showing she did have feelings for him and 2) he saved her from drying and 3) she had previously saved him from the other mermaids
As for how she got to the fountain, she's a mermaid. Perhaps she knew a secret underwater path. As for why, I think you're right, she didn't want her tear go to waste. She has an interest in Jack's decision, as a good mermaid, she probably doesn't want to contribute to immortalising evil. However, the question as to whether she knew Penelope was dying or that the cups had been missing is left unanswered.

I thought that sinze I heard that Penelope Cruz was cast. It's the main thing I'm worried about disliking when I finally see the movie.
Btw, have the smiley's been downgraded or something?
