Edward Scissorhands - We've had the DVD at my house for quite a while, but this was the first time I actually sat down and gave it a viewing. I was pleasantly surprised! It was odd, but that was to be expected. I ended up enjoying it.

Penelope - I'm normally not big on Christina Ricci, but this was a fantastic film! The storyline was charming, and the characters were all so lovable. I'm highly anticipating the DVD release.

Saw Justice League: New Frontier at a friend's house. Loved it. I've always loved DC better than Marvel, though I love some of Marvel's stuff, and it remains the case today when comparing the lines of direct-to-video animated films. For the record, I hardly ever read any of either, just always been a fan of their TV and film incarnations. Grew up with the 1980's Saturday morning shows from both and the Hulk and Batman live-action series, and tons of stuff from both sides all the way to today, but not the comics themselves. Anyway, looking forward to eventually getting this one myself.

Also saw "Spiral" that same night. This movie was good, but it was sooo falsely advertised! The trailer is really cleverly crafted to look like a violent horror film. In fact, the whole film is this romance between a goofy, troubled artist and a sweet though way too talkative and only occasionally attractive girl. Only in the last few minutes does it become horror material. But, the theatrical trailer cut together those last few minutes with every quick shot of a bad dream or creepy line or facial expression (creepy when taken out of context that is), and really amazingly edited the thing together to look like a slasher pic or something! It was insane to watch the trailer again after seeing the film. I got that one myself free to review on Amazon.com, so I'll go into further detail on it there when I'm done with the extras.

Also saw C.H.U.D., which a friend sent to me. I had always wanted to see this because I remember being at a cousin's house as a kid and the older kids were watching it in the next room but we weren't allowed to see it. Apparently, the theatrical cut was much shorter than the DVD version, which does run a bit long I think, and it's disappointing that we don't see the monsters very much, but it's not as bad of a movie as the cast and filmmakers make it out to be when riffing it during the commentary. It's actually fairly good and I like the subject matter.

This weekend I watched:

-Das Leben der Anderen (The life of others) Fascinating movie!
-Origine (Japanese anime scifi movie)
Well-made scifi adventure, looked gorgeous. Still I think human figures are a bit 'stiff', but that seems to be the case with most of anime..?

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1967), another great musical. Liked "A Secretary is Not a Toy" the best out of all the songs.

Just watched a screener copy of "The Living and the Dead". At the beginning, I thought it might be terrible. It picked up though. Very wacky and not really horror as it is called, but very twisted and disturbing nonetheless. I gave it 3 of 5 stars. It's a good movie, but it's uncomfortable to watch and the victims of the story could have been more endearing.

Hairspray(2007)-Great, as always!

I'm so jealous of you guys ... I haven't watched a movie for ages. in fact, I watch films very rarely, mainly because I don't have time to do so, thanks to all the bloody exxagarated subject sillabi we have here in Malta. School takes the hell out of your life. Secondly, I currently don't have 'suitable' equipment on which to watch movies. Call me picky, but the unsuitability of the equipment is just the TV missing its remote control, hence I can't change to my preferred colour settings. I've sworn not to watch another film till we get the remote replaced.* Does that sound extreme? I can't help feeling that way ...

*That might be problematic. The remote control for our model of TV (a 10 year old 29" Sony 'Super Trinitron' CRT television) is no longer manufactured.

Julian, I think it's time for your family to consider purchasing a new TV.

Tex (1982), A good, solid, straightforward drama from Disney. Why are they not making good movies like this but Collage Road Trip instead?

I've been reading on the net for quite some time that "Freddy Got Fingered" is considered one of the worst films ever made. I watched its review on the "Ebert and Roeper" website. All the criticism made me really curious to see it, and decide whether it's as bad as they say. Since I'm too embarrassed to rent it, I watched it all on YouTube (a first for me) - with pixelization and vertically stretched picture I must admit - but I saw it.

Roger Ebert's rating: 0 stars

My rating: 1.5 stars (it's actually very mildly entertaining, at times actually funny, sometimes purely disturbing, and frequently embarrassing (for Tom Green))

Grease

Wonderful classic movie-musical. Easily wins 5 of 5 stars.

The English Patient
Not easy to watch but it's totally worth it. Touching, romantic, fabulous story and some of the finest British actors.

Fool's Gold

I wanted to see 27 Dresses, but was dragged into this intsead. Easily the worst movie I've seen this year. While the ending perked up a little, it was still overall a terrible film. I STRONGLY do not reccomend it.

By that do you mean it's long and dragging? Cos that's the problem I had watching it. Unfortunately it did significantly diminish the entertainment value for me, and I don't think I'll be watching it again anytime soon. For all its good, I was impatient, restless and I strangely remember feeling almost breathless at the end of the film.

Penelope starring Christina Ricci, Reese Witherspoon, James McEvoy, Catherine O'Hara and Peter Dinklage. This is one of those 'chick flicks' that I willing go to with my wife, because I think sometimes I enjoy them more than she does. This is a cute little film, and is currently lost at the theater among all the buzz about the Oscar films. With 20 screens to choose from, sometimes it is hard to find 'that little movie' that will make your day, and this one was worth looking for. It is very well done, and James McEvoy again chews up the scenery in every scene he is in.

August Rush-I popped this in not too long ago and was pleasently surprised at how great it was! The music was so smooth and phenomenal and so was the story. A definite reccomendation.

I didn't think it dragged, there are just some scenes, like the one with the thumb etc. that are not easy to watch, but they are very short compared to the many lovely scenes that movie has and as I've already said the story and the acting are amazing although Ralph Fiennes crying "Catherine" totally reminded me of "Wuthering Heights".
It's not a movie you can watch every day, but when in the mood for some real drama and a gripping love story this certainly is a good decision. What really helped me liking this movie is that Colin Firth has a part

I found myself in the same room with The Blair Witch Project earlier today. I know it's totally fake and unscary, but I thought it was pretty entertaining.

Grease-I loved it! Definitly a new favorite.
