I actually think this is the best episode of season two so far. For once, I felt like all of the kids were given a decent amount of screentime (I guess getting rid of Sue and giving Will nothing to do helped in that regard) and all of the songs were strong (yes, even Rachel and Finn's in its own perverse way).
The season premiere was decent but tried to introduce too many things at once instead of letting a couple of threads breathe. Britney/Brittany was merely okay but felt like one big fluff episode that added little to the storylines. Last week's religion episode was very strong and tasteful, but not all of the songs worked (Puck's stuck out like a sore thumb). I feel totally satisfied by everything in tonight's episode.
Artie's my favorite of the guys in the group, so I was happy to see them give him some meat to chew on tonight, and I was surprised by how much I liked him with Brittany. Artie has a bit of a wordly attitude when he's with Tina, but for the most part, he's pretty naive and innocent, and I think that works well with Brittany's airheaded form of innocence. Like everyone else, I don't see them exploring this relationship further, but I have to admit it was more interesting than most of his stuff with Tina.
Both of Kurt's numbers were the highlight for me in this episode, and now I really really want to see him perform more duets with Rachel. "Happy Days Are Here Again" was the absolute perfect song for them to sing together. They should give Kurt more Judy songs the way they keep giving Rachel Barbra ones. I can easily see him singing "The Man That Got Away" or even "The Boy Next Door" at some point in this series.
Oh, and like UmbrellaFish, I didn't even notice the lack of Sue in the episode until her commercial popped up. That speaks volumes right there.
I confess I've never seen all of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I've seen enough pieces to get a good feel for it, though, and I'll be checking out the Blu-ray next week in preparation for the Rocky Horror episode.
