I remember, Walt was very inspired by Charlie Chaplin in creating Mickey Mouse and Chaplin was also criticized for being overly sentimental. Interesting, because you’re right, schmaltz and sentiment are very much baked into the Disney DNA. Usually it works, I think, because their movies are very sincere.

Yeah, I've always seen the throughline between Chaplin and Disney. But it was only relatively recently that I found out (from the DVD commentary, I think) that they were actually friends and that Chaplin was actually one of Walt's earliest proponents in what he was trying to do with making a full-length animated feature out of the Snow White story.

I liked the short fine. I didn't cry, but I found that part with Mickey sort of sweet.

I’m just glad I got to hear Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh with his hand-drawn animated model, probably one last time.

In case you missed it, the short ended up winning the Emmy it was nominated for.

I think this is a better use of the space, which is currently being occupied by Star Wars: Launch Bay. I hope they are truly creative in their reimagining of this attraction and the courtyard— I deeply miss Florida’s Toontown, which now only exists in California. It would be great if this were a spiritual successor to that land.

I genuinely love this news. It feels like something old with a big splash of new. As much as I love Star Wars, I’ve never experienced Launch Bay for myself, but I feel it’s overstayed its welcome by six to nine years.

I'm probably extrapolating far too much here, but it does make me wonder if, after their Star Wars and Marvel splurges didn't have quite the pay-off they were anticipating, the parks might be pivoting back toward defaulting to their animated catalogue for theme park experiences. I'd be really happy if that were the case.

I also love that this poster showcases a really broad range of Disney characters, and that it's not just like Encanto and Frozen--the newer films. I hope that's indicative that the attraction will focus on films from across the library, old and new. You want the kids to interact with the classics too. (I showed my nephews Steamboat Willie for the first time this week, and I was so relieved that they loved it!)

I wouldn’t necessarily read this as a direct result of Disney’s challenges with the Star Wars franchise as Launch Bay was always intended as a transitional space— a place to “launch” a home for Star Wars in the parks after the Lucasfilm acquisition. Ever since Galaxy’s Edge opened, Launch Bay has been existing on borrowed time.

That said, I do agree that it is significant they have chosen to retheme this space back to Disney Animation. I don’t imagine more Star Wars would have been on the table due to the location (the rest of DHS’ Star Wars stuff is on the other side of the park, after all), and Disney is really hand-tied on what Marvel stuff they can offer in Florida. Nevertheless, Disney still had plenty of other viable IP options to fill the space. This could have become Monstropolis, a new home for the Muppets, Zootopia, or whatever. But they chose to make an interactive, fantasy-inspired version of the Animation Building—which suggests to me they’re seeing a meaningful level of guest interest in celebrating Disney’s animation legacy.

I don’t have my aspirations set super high for this attraction since it’s just a refurb and the maze experience already announced sounds like it’s more intended for younger audiences— I just hope the area feels very alive with lots of character meet and greets that constantly rotate. It would be a great setting to meet lots of B-characters they already have costumes for, like Meeko, the Brother Bear characters, Smee, etc.

I just hope this means we'll see a bunch of new animation. maybe there were shots that were scraped from once opon a studio they are repurposing for their animation wall or whatever its called.

In the article, it said there will be a short film. Hopefully, it will be 2D-animated.
