Considering the last release with that line was in 1994 and Planes isn't even animated by WDAS, I would say no.

I'm guessing in Europe they add this label to more dvd/blu-ray releases? But it really means nothing.

Couple of contributions to this thread:

This past Sunday, August 4, was watching my NASCAR race from the 'tricky triangle' that is Pocono Raceway, and after the Star Spangled Banner, three airplanes flew over the crowd and low and behold, one of them was Dusty from Disney's Planes. Then to add to this, Dane Cook, the voice of Dusty, was the Grand Marshall of the race, and he gave those four important words in racing "Drivers, Start Your Engines"!!!

While watching the race, there was a commercial for "Planes" and it says that there is an early showing on Thursday night, August 7th. So I am checking our theater listings and find that we have a showing on Thursday night at 8 pm. But, alas, when I went to the theater after the race, all tickets have been sold out for that showing.

I was then told about an Advance Screening, with no title given, for Tuesday, August 6th, and decided to go to that show. We went in early and saw "2 Guns" with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, which was a very good "popcorn" movie. No braniac challenges, just a lot of crashes and bullets flying. So we sat there until they came to check our tickets and we showed them we had tickets to the Advance Screening. When the lights went down, and the Disney logo came on the screen we were surprised, we were going to see "Planes", and I will tell you it was a fantastically fun movie.

I dislike all those who are trying to say, if it's as bad as "Cars", then it will crash and burn, and I will tell you that "Cars" is one of my most favorite films, at least in my Top Five. "Planes" is just as good, if not better, than "Cars", and you can tell that Lasseter and the Pixar guys had a lot to do with this movie. The sound effects are spectacular, and the characters are well thought out, and each one of the planes in the movie has a role that is played very well in the storyline.

I, for one, am so happy that they decided to put this film in the theaters and not go direct to video like they originally planned. I will tell of you naysayers out there, that this movie is good enough that we might see it nominated for Best Animated Film in the Oscars in February, 2014. Will it win? Depends on the competition out there. This year there have been a lot of really good animated films including "The Croods", "Epic", "Monsters University and "Turbo" (which I have seen four times already) and now we get "Planes", which might put Disney animation back on the map.

Now leave your critical brain home, buy your ticket, get some popcorn, and sit back and let this film take you on a fun, exciting, adventure of all-time. "Planes" is a real fun movie that won't challenge your mentality, and won't make you think about anything except what you are watching on the screen. I plan on seeing this on the big screen at least twice more, for sure, and maybe more.

I don't really think Disney is planning on it being that successful since it was originally supposed to just be DTV, as I'm sure you all know...

He linked you to the wrong page. It should be the list of WDAS films, not the list of VHS releases. The "Disney Animated Classic" title certainly didn't end in 1994. They use the titled for every film made by WDAS. They advertised Tangled as the 50th Classic, and I've already seen some places advertise Frozen as the 53rd. It may be prestigious and whatever, but it IS the label given to these films by Disney.

Regardless though, Planes is not part of the Classics list. It fits in the same place that the Tinkerbell movies do.

Reviews are terrible.

Most interesting, and shocking, is the ethnic stereotypes that are apparently going on in Planes. I had hoped we would move on from these, but somehow I'm not too surprised Lasseter is oblivious to this. PIXAR has done their share of cultural and ethnic stereotypes.

Well he includes "The Wild" as a "classic" and says Home on the Range was last and Brother Bear should have been the last so that's not really what he meant.

What I meant was if Planes is supposed to be included as part of the Disney main films.

This way, Planes would have to be the next movie after Wreck it Ralph and before Frozen.

But you already told me it won´t be so it´s ok.

...as for The Wild be part of the line that´s how Disney has left it in Europe.

The Wild is officially considered a Classic in Europe by Disney themselves (as stupid as that is). The other thread regarding Home on the Range and Brother Bear was referring to the fact that the hand drawn division was shuttered after that, leaving Home on the Range to be the "last" hand drawn classic (obviously before they brought it back).

So... it is what he meant, and you seem to be giving him a hard time for no reason.

Huh? I'm saying Lady Cluck seems to be giving you a hard time for not knowing what you're talking about, when you really do.

I acknowledged that its different in Europe in another thread where he was obsessing over whats "classic" and what isn't. My point is that the arbitrary label means nothing, and The Wild being labeled as such proves that. There will always be the real list of what was produced by WDAS.

Anyway, on to important matters. Currently at 29% on rottentomatoes. Yikes. A lot of the reviews are complaining about the racial stereotypes too

Nope....it's 21% now

I thought it was better than that. Yes, I saw it at EAA Airventure where the director and producer presented.

Oh, there was definitely stereotyping,(none of it racial; all of it national) and none of the characters were memorable. The flight scenes were nicely handled, with plenty of accuracy. And a little bit of gentle humor

But not a great movie overall.

When you go to Fandango and click on a time to see Planes, there's this message on the ordering page

"Little ones will love the bright action scenes." - TotalFilm

Also Planes made close to $23 Million Dollars opening weekend. I know the budget was $50 million, but that doesn't include advertising or anything like that, so in order to make a big profit it has to double it's listed budget

Do you think if this movie really does tank, Lasseter will still go ahead with sequels ?

It opened in third at the box office, did better than turbo and the smurfs 2. Considering its small budget its already a success.

I took my kids last Friday night and went in with REALLY low expectations.

It actually wasn't that bad. A lot of it was predictable and cliche, but I found the story at least as engaging as the first two Tinker Bell films.

And my kids didn't ask to get up to go to the bathroom (they ALWAYS ask to go to the bathroom).

If you saw it and you hate it, fine, but otherwise, why judge it before you do? I made that mistake with the Tinker Bell films. I avoided them assuming they would be crap and was pleasantly surprised.

That being said, I do think this is one where you could save your money and watch it when it's released on DVD.
