I've finally decided...
I'm going to buy Sleeping Beauty for Blu-Ray...I already have the 2-disc Special Edition, but I might aswell buy this one since it's a Platinum Edition and the first Classic Disney movie on Blu-Ray, plus I think the visuals and sound are freaken amazing.
But I'm not going to upgrade all my Disney DVD's to blu-ray, just my favorite ones...like Aladdin and Peter Pan & such.

Should I get this for Blu Ray?
Do you guys think Disney's commitment to the format will be that strong? I have ALL the Platinum's on DVD so far, and I don't want to commit to buying them all on Blu Ray and abdoning DVD when you guys don't think they won't support it.
I just want all my collection in one place...lol maybe I'll buy both!!

I'm sure you'll have one by then! The PS3 the best value in the Blu Ray player (mostly because you can upgrade the featuers in it!) keeps dropping and dropping in price - plus if you search you can find it used for pretty cheap!
I just want to get 7.1 surround sound speakers, do you guys think that it will really make a difference? I mean how much more can you do with the audio from a classic?

Hello, For some reason , I've never seen Sleeping Beauty, I think It's the only big Disney movie I've never seen. Can someone explain this movie to me?.....What Disney movie is it most like: and that sort of thing?
I'll probably buy the platinum Edition since I collect those, I'm just curious if this movie is, in you guys' opinion, as good of a movie as, say,Cinderella, Snow White(probably not) or Pinnochio. There must be something off about it if it never reached the same level of popularity as the other Disney fairy tales, but at the same time, I guess you could look at it the other way around and wonder if it did not reach that level because mabey it's more adult than other Disneys and didnt appeal so much to children?.......So, What are your overall thougts on this movie, and what would you say the selling points are(besides the DVD being a collectors piece) of this film? Thanks for any responses....

I think there's many reasons why it might not be as popular as the other Disney films. Personally, it's my favorite Disney film and I think the story and animation style throughout are beautiful, but I think that's the main reason why it kind of turns so many people off. The animation is very stylized and angular (the characters are much more designed with sharpler angular lines than softer rounder designs like the other Disney films). Also, while the story does center around a princess, she's actually probably the character who takes the least action in the story. I think this is probably why it's always misinterpretated or underlooked. While Snow White and Cinderella are very active characters in their story plots, Aurora does little, while Prince Phillip, the three fairies, and Maleficent are the more central characters and more involved in the actual plot.
Another reason I think is that the movie tends to get regarded as "too adult". There aren't many songs in the picture, and they're all based on Tschiawosky's melodies from his ballet "The Sleeping Beauty", so the soundtrack and songs have a much more classical sounding than the other Disney animated features. Also, others might find it "boring" because of the lack of animal sidekicks. Aurora does have animal friends, but they only appear for about 10 to 15 minutes of the whole film. The whole movie is more directly about the fairies, Phillip, and Aurora than any animal sidekicks. I think these are a couple of reasons why it's so different and not many tend to like it because the film is more intended for a more adult sense in that it has a more classical soundtrack, no animal sidekicks throughout the entire picture, and the more active characters is the prince, fairies, and the villain and not the princess.
Wow, that was a long post.

I think it all comes down to just your taste. Personally, it's my favorite because it's so different from all the other kind of Disney films, has a more distinct and stylized look, the prince and the fairies are the more active characters.

My dad broke our scanner, so we don't have it anymore, so I have taken some pictures instead.
They are not great, but they give you an idea of what the composition will be like etc.
I will post them in about 15mins after I have uploaded them

As I said, the pictures are not great as my scanner is not here anymore
Although it isnt very clear, near Aurora's head there are two jets of magic, one pink and one blue, showing the great fight that goes on between Flora and Merryweather. Could it be Disney are being sly and not showing Aurora in either colour for her dress so they can change it in their marketing as they wish ? as you can see, her dress is not on show.
Compared to the 'read aloud' storybook that you posted Ariel's Prince, Auroa seems to be smiling in that version of her sleeping. Hoever in the poster for the cover art, her mouth is tilting downwards, and not in a smile at all. Her eyebrows also seem slightly higher. And her hair is golden on the cover as well, not washed out Barbie blonde.
Her crown does not have the 4 red gems in it either; if you can see, she only has 2 purple gems either side of her crown. the logo crown copies this, but with a heart shaped red sont in the middle.
The colour is a very rich purple, very suiting to the cover, with much Disney Dust in the air.
I'm so sorry for promising a scan, when now I can't deliver, but I hope these help in some way for people.
If there are any questions, ask away.

Oh,
atlantica, thank you! It actually looks pretty neat. I guess new drawings really can make a difference, even though I still like it the least out of the other French covers (this one is just the French cover nobody likes re-drawn).
Thank you for the VERY detailed description, it was perfect (thanks for mentioning Disney dust!). So, they actually did the pink and blue magic? AWESOME! That's very similar to the pink dust I made in my version of the cover posted a few pages back. And not showing her dress but showing the two colors in the magic dust is clever. And we were talking about her often incorrect hair. Glad it's gold like it should be!
Aurora should be frowning, really, or expressionless, as she doesn't smile while sleeping in the film, even when Maleficent says she's dreaming of her true love, so the cover's even more correct (though I would not mind smiling). What's not correct is the jewels. Aurora definitely had red, not purple, gems in her crown, and there were four of them, not two. There are even two tiny blue ones but they're hard to see. But making only two gems, and making them purple, doesn't fly with me. I could tolerate a purple dress since it technically gets purple for some frames as it changes from pink to blue and vice versa, but this is not the same.
Get a look at Aurora's Crown
So I do have three questions,
atlantica. What is behind Phillip and Aurora (clouds?). Are Flrora's hat scarf thing and pleats (the folds in her dress) gold or pink or orange? Gold would be correct. And does the dragon breath fire? Because it did on the other image of the cover we've got in that other thread.
Atlantica, would it be okay if I brought in the image from that other thread?

Thanks for the pictures, atlanticaunderthesea, we appreciate it. Looks like this may well be the final cover art for the Platinum Edition release. Or at least, a good rough version of what we'll see.

Thank you so much for posting this, atlanticaunderthesea! Personally, my favorite is the purple French cover with Maleficent and the dragon, but I love this one as well. It looks much better than the previous Special Edition cover.

I'm stuck in the middle, I want to upgrade, but like everybody said, the previous release was rather good, sure it wasn't a hardcore special edition but it had some decent features. My mom buys me the Oct. Platinums and I buy the spring Platinums, we already own 2 copies of Jungle Book cause my servely handicap bro, Noah (can't speak in vocal terms) enjoys the film too and mom said that was a one time we'd double double dip. So now I'm debating if I should skip the Platinum and wait 5 more years for a new format or roll with the flow..
My mom agreed that we'll Double Double dip on Pinocchio cause Noah also enjoys the film, somebody help me choose.....

I say why not Mason? The title will only be 15 dollars (via Amazon) and you can enjoy the flick with your mom and your brother...I mean I suppose the 2004 DVD is a great buy - but if you have all the other Platinum Editions already, and have double dipped for Jungle Book and Pinnochio why not?
I'm gonna be double dipping on the Blu Ray High Def releases already :*(

I think it depends on how much money you have, Mason. I probably won't be double-dipping, just because I won't even have an extra $15- when I get money, I have other things that I want to buy than a movie I already have in a great 2-DVD set. But, you'll get Disney Movie Reward points and whatever store exclusive will be at the store you buy it at, so that might be an incentive to buy it. And, if there will be a music video, you might like the artist. And there could be bonus features not on the 2-disc set.
So basically, I'd say that if you can afford the DVD and don't mind double-dipping, then go for it!
