Too bad he doesn't have the Tarzan 2-disc CE as the new release isn't worth buying; and I have no intention of justifying Disney's BS marketing strategy by doing so.

How would you know if the DVDs are pirated if you haven't bought anything off him? He has sold so many DVDs, and has perfect feedback, and I wouldn't suspect that he is selling bootlegs. If he sold 350 bootleg copies, someone has got to give him negative feedback! Just because he sold "58" copies of the little mermaid does not mean that they are all pirated

Yeah, but feedback is a double-edged sword. If they leave negative feedback for him, he'd leave negative feedback for them.

All in all, I'd give pricecollegefund the benefit of the doubt and assume that his DVDs are legit.

Well here is some proof:

The sellers top selling Disney DVD is in fact - The Little Mermaid. If you look closely enough at the white security sticker you can see the difference between a legitimate copy, and a pirated one.

Here is an authentic white security sticker pic.

Font Spacing is correct :)

The sellers copy: The font spacing on this one is incorrect.

Perhaps it's proof that there are variations on the top sticker?

I've seen different versions of the same title. I think for Lilo and Stitch that we have at home, the top sticker was actually the width of a double-alpha case, but new copies I see in stores is the standard size.

Actually Ruben, that's not a good way to check if it's a bootleg or not. If you go to Best Buy, Circuit City, or any store that sells lots of DVDs and look at (for example) the Aladdin DVD and their labels, you'll notice that the font and spacing are different (one may be wider, one may be thinner). I know this because I just looked at my Aladdin DVDs (the one in the Gift Set and the extra one) and both the font spacings are different.

And unless someone else would purchase a DVD from him and verify/prove the seller is in fact bootlegging, then...we can't really assume.

But thanks for warning us and showing concern.

Good point Escapay,

There are two known variations - one with the UPC,

and one without, but both of the fonts are still unchanged.

It is fake from my experience. I bought a similar bootleg at Ebay from a different seller whose feedback is 99%. The insert is glossy.

Let's ask Robin Hood...
Robin Hood, was your insert glossy? Because that's grade A bootleg right there. (I would know...MMP made me buy bootlegs. :()

So the bootleggers are now sneaky enough to counterfeit even the factory seal?

The acid test would be the disc itself:

- Is it region protected?
- Is it copy protected - macrovision, encryption, etc?
- Is it dual layered?

All the answers should be yes for a genuine region 1 Little Mermaid.

Some other titles are single layered, but under no circumstance can a genuine DVD be region free or unencrypted.

Bring in the holographs me says ;)

At least it might make it more expensive for the bootleggers to produce authentic looking copies at least.

The thing is, despite the positive feedback... what if the buyers in question have NO IDEA they are getting pirates? That is always a possibility. Who are usually buying these DVDs? People who probably have no clue what is real and what is not. They just want the film on DVD.

So until I actually had one in my hand, I'd probably not be able to say if he's legit or not.

I remember many years ago, I bought bootleg copies of "Bambi", "Dumbo" and "Lady and the Tramp" on a VHS format. I was in Brooklyn at a store near 5th ave. in Park Slope, they were selling bootleg copies of many Disney films that were originally called "Black Diamond", a series of Disney animated classics that they were theatrically reissued at the time before the first VHS release. As of right now, you got to be careful, the bootleg Disney DVD's is happening all around New York City. The bootleg DVD's that someone was copied from the actual series that were on VHS before. For example "Black Diamond", "Masterpiece" and "Gold" collections. You got to be careful here.

I was looking on ebay for Silly Symphonies and found this one. It's a really low price but looks legite. What do you guys think?

When I went "Treasure hunting" for the OOPs on eBay last spring, I don't think I ever encountered any suspicious auctions. I don't know why but it would seem the bootleggers stick to the classic movies for some reason. At least if the tin is included you're bound to get a legit set.

By the way, I got mine for some $25 new and sealed so just because it's fairly cheap doesn't mean it's not legit. Even if it was in the first wave it was by far the cheapest of them all (back then at least).

Personally, I wouldn't go for it. Sorry but I have to see a picture before I can even think about buying it.

So I'd just wait until I see another copy for cheap, but with a picture!

But then again, I'm the wrong person to ask, since I'm not to fond of Disney's "Silly Symphonies"!

The link Disney Lover just provided does have a picture. What are you talking about?

There's no doubt that the item is legit, since it has the numbered tin and all. However, when the auction has ended and all bids have been placed, the cost will most likely be a lot more than $5. :) No reason not to try and bid for it though.

Yes there is a picture. There are three pictures down a bit further in the item description.

Yes I think I'll watch the auction and see about bidding. Depending on how high the price goes up.
