Recently, the Academy announced that the entire membership will be able to vote for the best animated short category and every voter will be sent a DVD with all of the nominated shorts. This is the first time they've allowed the entire Academy to vote since the early '70s. I think this increases Paperman's chances, as they will probably vote for the most popular and universally appealing film. Walt Disney won so many of his Oscars in this category, when everyone was allowed to vote, so I expect his studio will win again this year (incidentally, the last time Disney Animation won the Animated Short category was "It's Tough to Be a Bird" in 1969).

I don't agree with this new rule change. It means the Oscar will most likely be going to well-known studios like Disney or Pixar. Independent shorts won't stand a chance. People do get influenced by brand recognition. Especially, when they don't belong in the field and don't know much about animation.

You're probably right. The reason they changed the rules so that only voters who attended special screenings could vote was because back in the early '70s, most of the voters hadn't seen the nominees and so just voted for the American short (the other two nominees were Canadian).
The Crunch Bird won that year, which was a basically a two-minute joke. The Selfish Giant had more depth to it and Evolution (my personal pick of that year) was a lot more creative.

Is there an easy safe way of downloading it without using keepvid or keephd? I don't have java and I was told that in order to get Java I would need to reset my hard drive which I am not too keen on doing.

Yeah, 99% of the time anyone tells you that you need to reformat your hard drive is full it it, don't trust them. Java is safe.

Actually l should have mentioned that it was the people at the Mac Store who told me that I needed to install something called Lion. I don't even have an option when trying to download it and it was that guy who said in order to install Lion and I would need to reformat it. Or did I misunderstand him?

Lion isn't even remotely related to downloading youtube videos or installing Java. Lion is simply the newest Mac operating system. They wouldn't be allowed to tell you at the Apple Store how to download videos from youtube, as it is technically frowned upon and in some cases not strictly speaking legal.
All you need to do is go to this site:
http://www.clipconverter.cc
Copy and paste the address of the video you want to download, choose your format, and hit download. You may or may not be prompted to download Java.
Regarding Lion however, you most certainly shouldn't have to reformat your hard drive to upgrade to Lion. It may move some stuff around on you, but nothing more. For you personally though, since you seem a little unfamiliar with computers, I would guess the upgrade isn't necessary, as it doesn't add much besides bells and whistles.

Wow! This thing doubled its Youtube hits since I saw it 10 hours ago! It's now over two million.
Disney take notice. General public loves arty animated short. Now greenlight a feature using this technique.

I've found a charming animated short reminiscent of
Paperman.

Saw it on Youtube. It was...okay. Yes the animation was pretty great, but the subject matter just made it drag on for too long so it wasn't at all emotional for me.

Almost 5,000,000 views! Surely this means something.

It's over 5,300,00 when I open it. And the video isn't even listed. You can't look it up on YouTube very easily.
Very impressive.

Impressive work. How do you make custom steelbooks, btw?
On a related topic the Paperman short is now at over 11,000,000 views on Youtube.

Thanks! I just made this mock-up in Photoshop. I might consider printing it out on adhesive vinyl and trying to make a physical one using another steelbook, I know some folks over at blu-ray.com have done that.

I just had a random thought today. I think Im going to attempt to colorize paperman. Or at least a few seconds worth. But kyle, it looks so great in black and white, why would you want to change that? Well I assume if and when we get a full length feature movie using this style it'll be in color. I would like to see what that might look like. I don't have a real efficient way of doing so other than photoshoping it frame by frame, so don't expect much.
