Thank you. I was so happy when I found the ultimatedisney.com website and forum...It's nice to see people being able to get together to talk about something they love. I normally use yahoogroups for my internet corospondance, but I'm finding that they aren't quite up to date, since anyone can open a group...there are at least fifty groups with only two or three members.
I've been watching you guys chat with each other, and there are quite a few lively debates that have gone on in the past, and I saw one argument...but such is to be expected from a group of educated adults (or adults and teenagers as the case may be).
Disney has always been a source of wonder and magic for me. When they annouced Snow White on DVD I went on the internet to watch the various trailers again and again. Just the sound of 'that voice' going "The one that started it all" sent chills up my spine. I was never a very big fan of Snow White, and I'd rather watch most other movies over it since I have a problem with her character as a person (but that's my own problem)...anyway, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin have long been my favorite movies which were not released on DVD....but when I found out they were slowly releasing all of the Classics, I HAD to start collecting. I spent a month collecting nearly 40 DVDs, including some off of the internet. I also ended up getting the Treasures and all of the sequels (I'm a closet sequel lover! Though I cannot stand the latest trend of 'flashback stories' with short stories crammed together to make one longer story...i.e. Dreams Come True, Tarzan and Jane.)
I remember when I moved in with my grandparents (moved from California to Hawaii) that I cried when I found out that The Disney Channel was a pay only station. (We only had basic cable, no HBO for us...). My grandfather immediately started paying so we would have the station.
Not long after his death though, we stopped getting TDC...fortunately a few weeks later it was switched to basic cable. :D My music of choice is still Disney...and I own every Disney CD "Classic Songs" that was released, in addition to the Princess Collections. Used to listen to Radio Disney for a minute...before I realized I'd much rather listen to my CDs.
To this day, I cannot go into the Disney Store without wanting to buy nearly every stuffed animal in sight...every DVD, every CD.
I even tried to name my dog after a disney character...however, I couldn't find a good one.
Anyway, I've found over the past year since I started my collection that Disney goes far beyond a theme park and a few cartoons. It's the basis of my childhood, and as I've found...many others.

 That has to go in a greeting card or on a poster or something!

Thank you for sharing your story, DisneyGirl. It's so cool that I (and definitely others) could easily relate. On a trip to CA and Disneyland and three years later on a trip to WDW, I got bronchitis (sp?) both times! It definitely sucked, but once I was in the park, I forgot I was sick and enjoyed all the magic of Disney. I love everything Disney and I wish to have a lot of Disney things displayed in my house so I can share it all with posterity. Welcome to the forum, DisneyGirl :mickey:!

 I like Disney sequels too. They're usually not as great as the originals, but they still are good movies! I don't like the package-episodes sequels, but I'll watch them anyway. My favorite sequels are 101 Dalmations 2, Return to Neverland, TLM2: Return to the Sea, and Pocahontas II. The other problem is that sometimes their songs are childish with June and Moon rhymes.

I liked Lady and the Tramp II, 101 Dalmations 2, Return to Neverland, Return to the Sea and Stitch! Other than that, I've just seen then once and I just have them to keep in my collection

This is my story.
The first film I ever saw in the cinema was Jungle Book in about 1986 on re-release (I would have been four). The whole experience is burned into my brain - it was in the old Odeon Theatre (it's a club now  ) and I can remember like it was yesterday - the smell of stale popcorn and cigarrette smoke (this was back when you could smoke in cinemas). I loved every minute of it; sitting in a darkened room for an hour or so mesmerised by this story unfolding before me.
Throughout my childhood I was exposed to a lot of Disney films. My stepfather had a lot of the films on VHS, but mostly the classics (he is a big fan of all the films up to about Jungle Book - the ones made during Walt's lifetime, what he thinks of as the real Disneys. We also taped a lot of the shorts which were shown on terrestrial tv all the time.
I never really got to see many of the more modern films, because we never really went to the cinema much. However, I got Aladdin as a present and I loved it. I must've watched it about 100 times. The first film I really fell in love with. We also got Lion King and I loved that too (Aladdin will always be my favourite though).
I never went through a period of going off Disney as many teenagers do. My stepfather (an amateur animator) gave me a real appreciation of the historical importance of Disney, and the groundbreaking effect of the early films.
My best friend dragged me to see Beauty and Beast and Lion King on Imax in the last few years, which I'm glad she did :D She found out recently that I'd never seen The Little Mermaid ( ) and lent it to me -- it's one of my favourites now and I can't believe it took me so long to see it.
Now I've decided to collect the dvds (only special editions at the moments). I was lucky enough to get Beauty and the Beast platinum for £10 from a friend who ended up with two copies :D and I've also got Pinnochio R2 special edition, Lion King platinum, and Finding Nemo 2 disc. I've just ordered A Bug's Life collector's edition (only £8.99 on sale at www.play.com!) So that's 5 down, a gazillion to go!!
I also collect Disney Happy Meal toys - working McDs for a year and a bit was good for something! And I get the Disney Princess Porcelain Doll collection, a magazine in the UK with really beautiful porcelain dolls, quite expensive but worth it, imho.

So that's it I think. Brownie points if you read all this!

edited to say, not that you need to know, but I also have six of the Treasures, which I'm very happy about :D

Thank you for sharing your story, alex! I always enjoy reading everyone's experience with Disney.

Heh, I kind of did. I still loved Disney just not as much. It was because of Pokemon. Man, I hate trends. Though they were fun at the time, but it's A LOT of money I wish I saved for more Disney DVDs. Now, I love Disney as much as before and I love going to Disney World!

If you like collectible Disney dolls, I found this site from reading the back of the box of one of their dolls. The company also has a nice set of Disney Christmas village houses :santa: .

I'd like to welcome everyone who is new to Ultimate Disney! It looks like a lot of folks like The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. Unfortunately, I haven't seen either film yet. I'll keep reading the older posts now.

Thanks for the kind words Aaron. I was finally able to find time to write during my short summer vacation.

Wow, a Disney fan on the face of the Earth who hasn't seen two of the most famous animated movies ever. You better not miss the Platinum DVDs

I didn't go through this either, but my friends just didn't know I used to go watch kiddie movies instead of the latest 'cool' flick.

Alex, good story. It's always nice to see folks who were brought up on classic Disney as well, unlike the majority of the current generation of children, which seems to have never heard of Disney movies made prior to Toy Story.

DisneyGirl- I loved the way you phrased that. Disney was a very large portion of my childhood- and continues to be. I honestly believe that whether or not you saw Mary Poppins as a child, for example, has the potential to make a difference in your life.
...The closet sequel lover comment was pretty funny, too.

Are you planning on collecting them all? I myself only collect the ones I want. I'm not about to spend $25 on Davy Crockett since I've never seen an episode and since that whole type of show isn't really my thing, I'm not interested in it either.

This is so weird. When you say Disney to me, you say "The Little Mermaid". I grew up with this film, and my whole family just knows it by heart. And suddenly someone here says they've never seen it :o :o :o :o
But it's definitely the minority since 90% of the people here credit this film and the other 3 for giving them the big push to like Disney movies so it's ok :)

I know what you mean. Since I was a little girl, "Disney" has meant Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin. Those were my three favorite, then The Lion King was released while I was in Intermediate school, and it joined the group...it's hard to believe someone saying they've never seen one of them.
