I hate them because they are tree-killing DVD condoms. Honestly, it's just a repetitive piece of cardboard that uselessly repeats the cover art. And all the "fans" love them because they're under the delusion that a flimsy piece of paper will protect the case (there's such a thing as good DVD maintenance, and they obviously don't know about it as they rely on the stupid slipcover to do all the protecting). Not to mention the godawful fawnings over stuff like "ooh, it's metallic/embossed/opens like a book/scratch-and-sniff/plays a song!"

Seriously, the damn thing is the bane of DVD's existence, as there are idiots out there who'll pass on buying a perfectly good movie at a perfectly good price, because they can't find it with a slipcover.

I don't hate slipcovers like you do, Albert, but I don't see a use for them, but I would care about them if they played a song. That would be really great.

They do protect the case. Only, when they DO do their job (protect the case so get damaged themselves in the process) people want a new replacement slipcover? Wha? Perhaps a slipcover could have a slipcover protecting that. And then, that too would need a slipcover. And that also...

You see? They're pointless. Totally and utterly. When they do what they are disigned for, people still complain!

Well, I know this isn't on-topic, but being an admitted slip-cover lover, I have to say that even though they're essentially useless, and the whole "protection" thing makes even me laugh, they're like jewelry for DVDs. Maybe the real product is already pretty, but the adding of the "jewelry" only adds to the total beauty. I mean, if slipcovers are so useless, than so is cover art in general. Why waste ink and paper only to make something attractive and catch a consumer's eye? Makes no sense...

And just a question. What's your opinion on dust jackets for books? Many times those only repeat the cover art of the book, and they've been around much longer than slip-covers have.

And we're all gonna do it in 5...4...3...2...(A poof...and slipcovers around the world are suddenly gone)
