From the article above:
This is the first Disney•Pixar film told from the eyes of a child. Arlo may look big, but he’s only eleven. Sure, Inside Out featured Riley, but her emotions were the real focus of the story. In this film, we experience everything as Arlo does.
I hadn’t realized that Pixar hasn’t released a film with a child as a protagonist before. Nemo in “Finding Nemo” and Russell in “Up” can be viewed as co-leads in their films, but I think that Marlin and Carl Fredricksen, respectively, are the real leads of those movies. And, as the article says, the emotions are the real focus of the story in “Inside Out” and not Riley. Though this isn’t as serious as not having had a female character as the lead until its 13th feature, it’s a bit surprising for a company that supposedly makes films for children to not have had a film starring one until now. But soon they will have another child as the main character in “Coco”.

Here's another article about the making of the film, this one a bit more exhaustive, that includes behind the scenes photos and new concept art:

I didn't think of her. I never saw her as a child, but maybe you're right. She's going to get married at the beginning of the film, but she's probably only 16 or 17, so she's not an adult either. I don't remember if her age is mentioned in the film. Though she's not a little kid, maybe she should hold that title, along with being the first female lead in a Pixar movie. Then Arlo would still be the first boy protagonist.

By the way, there's a new trailer of The Good Dinosaur on Pixar's YouTube channel highlighting their 20 years making films.

What a lovely and haunting poster. The best poster of this movie so far (but not unsurprisingly).

I think that Japanese poster might be a bit spoilery.

Maybe others have mentioned it, but I don't have the energy to read through all the posts already written.

So the concept is that since the dinosaurs did not go extinct, they developed intelligence and the ability to speak, and the caveboy is a kind of a supporting character?

Have to agree with what have already been mentioned; the mix of very realistic backgrounds and the cartoony characters does seem a bit weird. But the kids will probably not notice.

Yes, that's it more or less. In this film the asteroid that made the dinosaurs become extinct missed the Earth, so dinosaurs continued living. The film is set millions of years after that, when humans have appeared. During that time dinosaurs have evolved, herbivore dinosaurs are farmers and carnivores are ranchers and they all speak, while humans don't. Arlo, the main character, is a fearful young dinosaur from a family of farmers that is swept away by a river and gets lost. He has to find his way home and will have the help of a little human boy.

Here’s the official synopsis:
The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

The "what if" thing is what they are using it to set it up, but really, it's just an alternate reality fantasy setting. It boggles my mind how many people on the Internet seem to expect scientific accuracy based on this premise.

Anyway, the reviews seem pretty good, but aren't quite glowing. I'm hoping to catch it on Thursday.
