Apologies for the late response. The moderating team has been in deliberation.
2Disney4Ever wrote:jazzflower92 wrote:No matter what their art style is they still will be Disney.
Not to me. I've been robbed of what made Disney animation special to me in the first place: the beauty of traditional hand-drawn art.
You are perfectly fine in having an anti-CGI agenda but this agenda does not supersede ANY forum rules or guidelines that EVERY member agrees to follow when they register for an account. You have been warned (repeatedly) in the past to remain on-topic. The moderating team has asked nicely for you to drop the aggressive and hostile attitude. We even allowed you "Sanctuary" threads (which I personally did not believe were necessary), both of which had to be closed because of violations of forum policy, most of the time instigated by yourself.
So, you have two options: you either abide by the forum rules and guidelines like everyone else which includes responding to threads with appropriate comments that remain on-topic or you look for discussion elsewhere. Either way, your current behavior will no longer be tolerated here.
Now, everyone, let's get back to talking about
Zootopia.

Exactly. Disney's teasers are always a bit silly - remember how the teasers for
Tangled and
Frozen ended up having almost nothing to do with the finished films? I think people are already being a bit harsh on
Zootopia. I personally think it could be quite interesting, though it would have been better if they had shown us a glimpse of the city of Zootopia as opposed to just its inhabitants in the teaser. Again though, it's a teaser made by the loopy minds of Disney's marketing people. In any case, I quite like the designs, particularly of the fox.

What is there to even want to talk about? Why should any honest-to-true believer in Disney animation even
care about this movie or be looking forward to it? It's just going to be another one of those corrupt CG movies that Disney has no business making. The ones that are killing off real Disney animation and what it's supposed to be. Wake up, people: we should all be
against these movies being made.
I hope you're proud of how you're running this "Disney" forum, Escapay. Encouraging members to be looking forward to corrupt Disney animation. You're just as clueless of a Disney fan as the other members on here. How about we just lock this thread and transfer all our discussion over to the one about hand-drawn animation, because Disney's CG movies ultimately don't truly matter.

loved the trailer, didnt find it condescending at all. after all, its a disney film and they are generally aimed at kids. i dont think theres many kids that would know or understand that word. that fox is a classic, flynn smirk and all. loved the yak [? hard to tell!] eating the end of the dart and passing out. brilliant.
im really looking forward to seeing an animal movie as opposed to a princess/human movie. it feels like forever since they had a decent animal based flick. the last would have been bolt if im not mistaken.
[as an aside, that pets film looks quite good, though the poodle and sausage dog remind me of the ones from open season]

New interview with the directors. I'm much more intrigued about the movie now.
Q: There are only mammals in Zootopia. Why is that?
Byron Howard: We thought really hard about it. We spent a year of research sketching things out in every sense of the word, and we ended up having a hundred different species in the final film.
Rich Moore: We had to choose. We decided to focus on a predator/prey dynamic and mammals offered more opportunities for that.
Byron Howard: What you may haven't noticed is that we chose not to show monkeys in the film. They resemble humans too much. It wouldn't have been funny. And of course, the films is only 90 minutes long. We couldn't include all of the animals.
Rich Moore: We are convinced that we shouldn't stifle the film with explanations. The story must be its own explanation. There's no need to annoy the audience with background details like why animals came to reign on Earth, etc.
Byron Howard: It's very difficult to make things simple. There's always the temptation to over-explain things. At Disney the goal is to cut, to simplify, to be direct. To trust the public and their intelligence.
Q: From all the animals available, you chose a fox and a rabbit. Why?
Rich Moore: Good question. Because they are already natural enemies. It immediately gives an established dynamic to the story: two enemies forced to collaborate, to become friends during the course of the film. Then we chose a rabbit who wants to become a cop, who wants to exceed its natural condition of the gentle herbivore, providing a different dynamic. It leads us to a thriller plot.
Byron Howard: The other reason is a question of scale. In Zootopia, animals range from mice to elephants. The fox may be a threat to rodents but also finds itself being threatened by a lot of other predators. It's a balanced character.
Rich Moore: Finally, the fox is a great archetype. The hustler, the rogue, the trickster. Basically, the film is a buddy movie.
Byron Howard: Absolutely. We're big, big fans of 80's buddy movies. Lethal Weapon, 48 hours, Trading Places... We find that in mainstream animation there haven't been stories that reproduce this genre in an adult and cool way.
Rich Moore: We wanted to do a thriller buddy movie that speaks about the struggle for power, for control. In the end, Zootopia even becomes dark and serious.
Byron Howard: It resonates with our world, of course. It's about social class and class conflict.
Rich Moore: The predator and prey that live together: that's a good metaphor for the United States. You only have to watch the news to realize that.

I think they mean to try to make a buddy comedy a little differently from Pixar's, which hopefully means that this will have a slightly different structure, rather than the basic introductory first act/conflict and crisis middle/action-packed climax and rewarding resolution.
Not that this is a bad formula, since Pixar makes it work, including for Inside Out, but my ideal would be for more of a Mad Max Fury Road-style execution, where Nick and Judy don't completely become best friends by the end. Regardless of the tone or execution, I'm intrigued anyway.

This does open up a lot of inevitable questions.
They probably already know that there are THOUSANDS of mammal species. So for the hundred featured in this film, does that include those whom would typically feed on non-mammals? (Bears whom eat fish, for example) And is there another blurred line between the "human" animals and the "animal" animals (like with Goofy and Pluto)?

I assume that they're using the word "monkey" to describe all primates (or at least apes) other than humans. I'll agree that some smaller monkeys don't resemble humans that much, but the bigger they get, the more they do.

whats the biggest monkey? baboon? those crazy things with long snouts, sharp fangs and tails?
are gibbons considered monkeys or apes?
I think they should have least had a baboon, b/c they really are very unhuman and...they know karate & stuff.

Well, Disney animation
has just become an extension of PIXAR. Every film since Lasseter took over Disney follows the same structure. And PIXAR are the kings of serving up the same thing repeatedly, but still somehow being lauded as innovative and revolutionary.

People complained in the 90's about Disney rehashing the same formula over again. Tropes are not bad if you find a way to be creative with them.

i may be wrong, but i think baboons are considered apes, alongside chimps, gorillas and orangutans. used to know all this off the top of my head, but 10 years of no re-reading favourite books dulls the memory.
i think gibbons may be apes too.

True.

I personally thought Pixar were repetive with their early films, but expanded their horizons after "Finding Nemo". Although Pixar does have similar components they repeat, I do think they have more variety overall. Despite that I think Disney is superior.

And those films were/are rightfully criticized for it.

Illuminations Studios, are you even trying?
As you may well know, one of Illumination’s 2016 features will be a musical. It will be directed by Garth Jennings (Son or Rambow) and the last time we reported on that film, Matthew McConaughey was cast as the lead character. Now, we know exactly who he’s playing and what the film will be about (straight from Meledandri himself).
The film will be set in a world that is “entirely inhabited by animals who have jobs and drive cars.” Sound familiar? We’ll touch on those similarities later.
Matthew will provide the voice of a koala named Buster. He’s a showman entrepreneur who runs a theater that’s in danger of going out of business. In order to prevent that from happening, Buster decides to hold a local singing competition. As such, the movie will be about “the story of the lives of the five characters vying to win the competition.” The movie will feature parts of 85 ‘known’ songs in its musical component. Also, John C. Riley will be voicing Buster’s friend (a black sheep).
“The starting point for the movie came from looking at what the role of the producer is. Buster creates wonderful entertainment out of nothing. The producers I admire the most, because it’s the opposite of me, are people like Janet Healey (Illumination’s production head), who have incredible optimism. Their positive force of energy makes things happen.” Meledandri explained.
Asides from the musical aspect of it, we have yet another talking-animal movie coming out in 2016. One who’s setting is extraordinarily similar to Disney’s Zootopia. A point of mention has also been made about The Secret Life of Pets and its similarities to Toy Story. I guess we’ll have to wait to see just how similar (or how different) this film will be compared to others (the movie comes out December 21, 2016).
