Super Aurora: I know "Death Note" was aimed at teenaged kids. But here's what I mean.

"Death Note" deals a lot with power. How the power to change someone's fate can easily corrupt anyone. Light realized that he could change the world and make it so that it fits his own beliefs. He becomes crazy and downright dangerous. Its a story filled with drama, death, violence and action, with a lot of polish and talent behind it. Its a story that could have easily been told in a live action film (and it did happen). But they turned it into an animated series, despite its concept, story and characters.

When I say to watch "Death Note" after watching "Squidbillies" I mean that anime proves that animation can be more than just crude drawings and random jokes, that fascinating and engrossing stories can be told and still be something that entertains children and adults.

This is a belief that should be practiced more around the world; if you want to make an animated film, even if the story doesn't call for it, do it.

As for Shin-Chan, I watched the Spanish dubbed version with all the jokes, comments and Japan-isms intact and there's still a huge fanbase for it. It didn't matter than Shin-chan said the wrong greeting or that they are celebrating "Children's day". The stories are very universal, fun and anyone can enjoy it.

Plus, Funimation did more than just change some jokes. They changed characters in order to reflect the adult mentality. For example, the Principal was created to be someone that looks like a thug, but is really the exact opposite. In the US dub, he is a literal thug with a very ridiculous past, and gave him a stereotypical Italian voice to match. His voice in the Japanese version was soft and kind, one that reflected his personality.

Kazama is now an American stereotype. True, he was a stereotype of the rich, upper class Japanese kid, but still made him a fool (like when he kept saying that he drinks coffee, even though he drinks hot chocolate) and was pretty innocent. In this new dub they tried to make him more like the South Park kids.

Its changes like these that made me despise the new dub. Shin-chan is risque, daring and full of adult humor, yes, but also preached life as being fun and children being innocent at the end of the day.

If I had seen enough new dubs to compare don't you think I'd have posted reasons? Anyways one thing that does spring to mind is voice actors/voices. Prime example (thought not recent) would be Sailor Moon on the Sailor Moon S Vol. 1 dvd, it's like Raven Japan style.

Luffy from One Piece has a grating voice last time I bothered checking, as well as Ash now has a creepy voice.

Anyways, like I said previously I haven't watched recent anime enough to fully comment on it. I also don't really remember saying new dubs suck considering I was thinking of the shows from 90's etc. not recent work.

I got pretty sick of ADV's dubs, they always seemed to have a girl with a Southern accent, a valley girl, etc, and other stereotypical American accents.

For the whole movie vs. TV argument, I've watched a good amount of anime movies and still found the actual animation lacking compared to Disney movies.

To Super Aurora: Yes, I bet adults love anime too, but not as many or as much as teens and college kids, though when those teens and college kids grow up...we'll see! As for the more detailed backgrounds, unfortunately there's way more anime than Disney, but I looked at some backgrounds online, including from Berserk coupled with what I have seen before, and the backgrounds look about on par with Disney's. I mean, think of any Disney Golden Age film, then Sleeping Beauty, and then the renaissance films from Beauty and the Beast up, while anime in turn has some less detailed stuff. I looked at Disney shorts, like The Chronological Donald, and some shorts still looked on par with anime for TV/ I agree, though I saw a lot that looked better. But I DO think anime often has more interesting, dynamic poses, more amounts of them. I, too, personally wish the battle with Maleficent was a little more exciting! It's supposed to be a big battle and it's like the most exciting part is when she becomes the dragon or when her head's in the thorns with Phillip.

The deaths in Sailor Moon were far more extreme and gruesome than Mufassa's!!! The way they're deaths were done, and that they happened to these main characters that had become more and more loved with each episode, is totally different from Simba's dad's death!

Hey, you posted an image that doesn't represent how the animation usually looks in motion! But anyway, I know. I've mentioned the more realistic anime, and thought of shows like Paranoia Agent or movies like Ghost in the Shell. But even with that Berserk picture, the left and right boys would be hard to tell with their heads shaved, not impossible, but still harder than it should be because of anime style. I was saying most anime, like the kind in so many shows that Big Disney Fan was talking about, hardly makes characters look different from each other and they're hard to tell apart. The anime style's more limiting.

Yea, it is something iffy, but I would think with more convincingly moving, often more convincingly drawn (realistic) animation comes more convincing everything. Especially when you study shots of real people in action, as Disney did.

Even American TV animation is CHEAP. What separates the two is that in anime, the put effort in creating a elaborate and well contracted story and continued serial events, rather than being episodic.

You know, American TV animation is getting cheap being real limited and all, but before this started anime did look and move a lot cheaper with characters looking so similar and hardly any movement.

Some are on par, some are better, some are worse.
Berserk in my opinion,especially the manga, has highly skilled and detail artwork.
Also the Hellsing OVA has fucking detailed backgrounds.

Oh God don't even say Disney beat Akira in term of backgrounds. THAT is skill work. Every critic praise the animation and graphic to this movie.

Yes anime has a butt-load of dynamic action going on, even if the animation is shitty or repetitive(see DBZ), you can't denied the awesome action going on like Goku's multi-hit punching, or the way someone attack with a sword or giant robot shoot hyper beam or something.

And yes I was pissed at Mali's big fight scene. I blame the fucking fairies on that one. but even so, all Prince Philip did was swing the sword recklessly, rather than with accurate skills. MAli was no different. why didn't they have her fly high and take a terrifying dive at Philly? Or swing her mighty paws or shit? Also the whole fight scene was viewed from the side rather from all sides(behind, atop, below, close up). Now Aladdin did it about right on other hand.

Adult Swim has uncut stuff and Toonami use to have some on Midnight Run. Showtime and IFC also air uncut anime. But that aside, there are anime really aimed for kids, like Pokemon etc. but even so, I think kids are big enough to watch stuff uncut stuff on anime like One Piece, Sailor Moon, DBZ etc. since they are aimed for kids to begin with.

Stuff like Berserk, Akira, Black Lagoon, are aimed for adults on other hand.

Emotional, yes. But wasn't all that graphic, gruesome, or extreme enough to warrant such a protest over. Kids can handle it.

Stuff that be extreme for kids are stuff really are gory, sexual, violent, langauge, in very graphic depicting. And those shows are aimed for adults anyway. Uncut stuff on kids or even mild teen shows(One Piece, Sailor Moon, Naruto etc) shouldn't be a bother.

Guts'(guy on left) has a stronger jaw line, more gruff looking, broader eyebrows, muscular body, more menacing eyes and tanner skin as oppose to Griffith (guy on right) who has paler skin, more narrow eyes, acute looking nose, slender eyebrows and body etc.

Even if you say those two men look the same, I can make the argument that all the three princes look the same by that logic.

Yea like Pokemon, DBZ, or Bleach but only to one another in their own series. Like Vegeta looking like Radditiz or Ichigo looking like Kensi.

The style of DBZ is not going to look like the style of Hokotu no Ken, or style of One Piece.

This is why I said it is mostly Moe or dating sim anime tend to have different series looking like one another.

But saying Lucky Star look like Akira or something is totally wrong.

This is also true I'm not denying it. But even so, that's why i said, if the story is great then it doesn't matter. Many American television shows have generic episodic episodes. rather than a continuing storyline to captivate audience to know more of what's going on.



All in all, I like both Disney and Anime. However, I'm defending Anime here because it has many reasons why so many people like it and what are the positive qualities in them. I'm saying this to people who don't understand this (Big Disney Fan).

There are some anime that suck, but there are some anime that are amazing. Like there are some disney movies that may suck and some that are fantastic.

BTW when did you get into Berserk?

And then they grow up! I thought you might say something about mostly kids liking Disney as well, but this forum has so many adults it's not even funny. And then there's the multitude of animation and general film buffs and historians who love Disney.

I didn't quote what you said for what I'm gonna say here, but yea, I bet Berserk has a really amazingly done manga, but that's the manga. As for Akira, I remember almost hating the animation but finding the backgrounds great, but once again they look on par with Disney's most detailed stuff.

Just think of the amazing, detailed, and often beautiful backgrounds from these films! You may need to look at screencaps as reminders, though.

No, the Disney backgrounds I saw, especially from The Chronological Donald, were the ones that looked better than the anime shows!

Everything you wrote about the Maleficent and dragon battle was so true. But for Technirama's super duper widescreen, seeing it from the sides may have been best to use the format. But Mally could have still done better fighting, and so could Phillip.

I looked up Guts, and that is not the one I was talking about! I was talking about the one on the left and the one on the right being really hard to tell apart without clothes or hair! I can easily tell the first three princes apart, Snow White's prince has like a super big round chin, Cinderella's prince has dainty pretty features, and Phillip has a strong, long chin and that's just half of it they're all just very different! I still think the anime style makes people look to similar just because of how they're drawn.

Well, those were just the things I could reply to. You said very good things and a lot I agreed with and I'm glad you love Disney and anime together. I love anime too, but I often wished that some anime would get animated as well as Disney. Now, I might also wish Disney took some detailing from anime, but actually the Golden Age films had shading on characters a lot of the time and also the lack of shading is sometimes done on purpose to look like a storybook illustration, a tapestry, or a certain other style. Think Sleeping Beauty or 101 Dalmatians.

There is too much anime out there to really judge, but it's the kind that's most popular over here, seen on TV and taking over even American TV shows that's really lacking and what I was talking about. Berserk and other shows you like probably aren't part of this kind.

I actually have never watched Berserk, I just looked it up. But it does look interesting. I just don't have time or money these days to get some of it or get into it, but maybe someday I'll get lots of time to do check out all these things.

Ok Inu Yasha, Sailor Moon, Escaflowne defiantly don't have to Disney par
animation (mainly cause they are movies to their tv series), but Miyazaki???? How could you say it isn't animated fluidly? I consider them just as good.

This forum is still a minority selected group of hardcore fans compared to the rest of the world that like disney.

And there are animation and films buffs and historians that like anime too. They are adults as well. Bruce Timm who did those awesome Batman TAS and Superman TAS, was influence by anime as well enough to draw fan arts (in his style) of Asuka and Rei.

I will admit that whole time was referring to the manga of Berserk and not the anime. The anime good and had excellent story and music, but animation was low budget. but I didn't let that get in the way of me enjoying it.

As for Akira, it been a while since I've seen Akira so i'll have to check back on the actual animation, but you can't deny whole fucking awesome the background were. Texnolyze is another high detail anime series.

The one I'll say that really has the high quality background and art is Pinnochio( also my favorite disney movie too.) it was robust and defined to upmost spectacularly well done.

Now the one in the middle is well drawn detail but the last one and the first one is too simplest .

I will agree the the golden era of Disney has some great artwork. Mainly cause I love the 30's/40's animation style. Look at Fleischer's Superman. had excellent animation and the background gave awesome impression of the 30's/40's.

However there are some Anime that are just as, if not superior, as disney stuff in term of background and technical artwork.

Agreed. Something I thought Aladdin improved on that SB lacked.

Even though it's suppose to be called "Adult" Swim, most often i heard many kids go an watch it. Especially since its on the weekend where kids don't always go to bed early. That and Adult swim airs "not-so-adult" anime like Bleach or Inu Yasha.

Midnight Run aired Uncut DBZ which is obviously aimed for kids anyway. just that it was at midnight. Something some kids "could" get out to watch.
Meh whatever. Point was, is that uncut anime DOES air on American TV.

No, it's more of a cultural differences between the two. But even so, despite that, I believe kids in USA are better enough to watch than American adult think that should. And if PArent feel wary about the show, talk to your kids about it or the situation that appeared on the show. Most American parents seems to negate their child about worldly things(violence, sex, etc) but if child see stuff like that, then parents freaks out and blames the show for the problem.

Stuff like that I hate the most.

Of course you're going to tell them apart as does for myself. Since we both love Disney stuff and a re nuts about it we could tell. But what about the average person? More chances than not, they would think they all look the same as oppose to their princess counterpart.

But again same can be said with anime. For instant, an average man would think Konata, Kogami, or Misuzu all look the same, but someone who really into anime can tell the different.

BUT there is instants where the characters are too drastically different from one another that even if they shaved heads, it'll be too different. That's way iIm trying to say for anime.

Thanks. Yea I like animation in general. What I just hate is when people see anime as crap or inferior when it really isn't. and that it's popular for a reason.

Yes, the golden age disney had more rounder and more realistic fleshness to it compared to the later disney films. Disney films got more stylize as the time went one. Anime has all kinds of style variations. like Soul Eater. Love that style.

Yea alot of the common known anime seems "crummy" in animation for various reasons. One: budget isn't that high. Two: They release the anime episode one a week making it fast paced. and Two, it's a Tv series compared to a movie.

But even for a TV series, and even if the animation isn't spectacular, the art direction, the story, the characterization, emotions, etc put into the series is what i love about it. and what I enjoy the most about it.

As I said earlier the Berserk anime wasn't animated amazingly, but it did put the great feel of the story into it which I love, and the music was fantastic. The manga just amazing. Period.

Well i doubt you'll get into it anytime sooner if thats the case. The anime is 25 episodes, and the manga has 33 volumes so far in Japan(25 in USA) and still ongoing.
But despite that and the intense graphic violence & sex, it's an amazing story with a whole mythology and cosmos world of its own that enthralls me.[/img]

I'm not gonna quote you this time, since I have little to say.

Miyazaki is really good, really more fluid than usual anime, but from what I remember, and then watching a little online, there is still some stiffness and just some things not up to par with Disney. I tried to pinpoint it, and I noticed often faces won't move while hair might. I guess it's that everything doesn't move, but in a Disney film everything does, and pretty much non-stop.

Actually I think these days young kids will watch anything and teens watch Disney but alot of them think it's kid stuff. I think more adults actually seem to appreciate and love Disney.

I knew there would be some adult buffs and historians who liked anime, but most seem to appreciate Disney, from what I've seen and heard. I think the ones that like anime are also more secret about it.

Yes, the backgrounds in Akira were awesome but if detailed is like, the little details, I didn't see something amazingly more life-like or something than Disney.

I think Disney is either on par or better than anime, I'd need to see the anime movies that are more detailed and have more than Disney movie's, but that would be the very best of anime. I was saying in general anime just doesn't seem to have it, but now I'm thinking it might just be from budget.

Yes, they show un-cut stuff on TV...but not intended for kids. It's at times when most kids would be in bed. Even on the weekend, health experts say not to let kids go to bed past like 9 or 10. If kids sneak up late at night, that's not parents letting them.

I think a lot of the kids on say, Youtube, could tell the Disney princes apart. They might not know which princess they go with or their name, but could tell them apart. I have a hard time telling certain anime characters apart while watching, especially in close-ups of the faces when the hair and clothes might be out of the picture.

Just to interject, I saw part of an episode of the Tarzan tv show from Disney (that was all I could stand to watch,) and that was extremely low quality animation. I saw the exact same "shadow pattern" from the leaves go across the screen every 5 seconds, and it just seemed cheap.

Right, littlefuzzy. And that's not how they did things back when Walt alive, the high quality things. All American animation today is getting really cheap.

I think "Anime Legends" is just a re-branding of the original episodes, kind of like "Best Sellers" or the Playstation games that have "Greatest Hits."

The "Best Sessions" disc is just a small collection of episodes, ignore it if you want the complete series.

The Perfect Collection was a hard box that came with a soundtrack and the original 6 discs, it is long out of print. If you find one on Amazon Marketplace, it is most likely a bootleg.

It doesn't look like you would even be able to find the original non-Remix versions now, as those are out of print (unless you found them used.)

From what I understand, the Remix versions have 5.1 soundtracks, in addition to the original 2.0 soundtracks (both Japanese and English.) According to a DVD Talk review, they have the same picture quality as the old discs, and the 5.1 soundtracks add quite a bit to the show. They have good extras, although I don't know if there are any missing from the old discs. I *PRESUME* the Anime Legends complete collection just repackages the individual discs, and includes the same extras.

Either pick up the individual Remix discs volumes 1-6, or get the CB Remix Anime Legends complete collection and save a bundle. Don't forget about the CB movie!!

Also, the first two seasons of Inu Yasha are only about $33. The later seasons are still around 67 or higher. You may have seen one of the limited edition sets in the store, those run ~$115 or more.

The full first season? damn and I can't order online Hmmm maybe I can get a store to order it in.....

I had to go back for more 50% off anime: School Rumble Season 2 (part 1) and Death Note (live-action movie.)

While I love the sale, it's sad, because the stores that had the sale are going to drop down to ~25 or so of the top-selling anime titles, and not much else.

I still don't know if that means the top 25 anime series/movies, or if it means they are going to have 5 Dragonball Z DVDs, 7 Fullmetal Alchemist DVDs, 9 Naruto DVDs, and 4 other titles...

This is a partial continuation from the Rock and Rule thread, I figured it would be more appropriate to post here since the discussion evolved into the subject of anime and beyond. So if any of this seems to come out of nowhere, well, that's why.

What made Riding Bean and especially Gunsmith Cats so interesting to me was that they take place in Chicago, of all places (both titles are tied together by the character Rally). The latter really shows the detail of the research trips the production team took to the city, which actually happened the year I was living there . . . in fact, they took so much care with the backgrounds that I could recognize the different areas I used to walk through on my way to school!

Cream Lemon is an old-school anime from the 80's and is probably the one of the earliest hentai series out there. Each episode is a stand-alone story that focuses on different characters. I actually haven't seen it myself but heard a lot about it in my early days of anime fandom along with the infamous Cutey Honey series from the 70's, lol.

Once again, I love shoujo! One series I really haven't been able to catch yet is Peach Girl. I was totally hooked on the manga before it was made into an anime, which is basically about the universal story of dealing with a manipulative "best friend" that you just love to hate, lol.

We recently subscribed to the Anime Network, which is an "on demand" channel where you pick what you want from an onscreen menu. My boyfriend's been enjoying it more than I, and he's been playing a lot of various episodes in the background while I'm trying to get work done and can't fully pay attention.
