That said, I rented the Blu-ray and was disappointed with just about all of it. I watched it in 1080p on my brand new HDTV and the limitations of the old restoration definitely show. I'm not talking about colors, contrast or anything like that (although shadows don't look quit right). I'm talking about disappearing line work. We've all seen the examples of disappearing details but it happens much more often then I thought. The tails on the mice sometimes disappear when they're over a dark background (just scrubbed away) and clothing is definitely a problem. There are also times where the line work is smudgy, like what happens when companies upscale 480p digital animation for Blu-ray (like THIS). Seriously, just compare the line work to Alice in Wonderland (which came out just a year later but features a more recent restoration). Granted, not all of Cinderella suffers from the over processed line work but it is a fairly substantial amount that does.

On a positive note, the movie holds up.There is just something about the simplicity of it all.

Yay! Yes, the movie's a classic masterpiece through through, flaws and all (too much mice and cat).

Ok... so I had a little surprise this Xmas. Some of you might recall I found a torrent of the UNRESTORED Cinderella, which had been sourced from the LASERDISC.

It downloaded 25%, and then it stopped. On Xmas day, it started downloading today, and finished yesterday. I burnt it onto a DVD today, and indeed, I now have the unrestored Cinderella.

First, let me say that DisneyDuster's comparisons are all 100% accurate.

Second, this transfer is DEFINITELY more faithful, and the colors make WAY more sense now, and are much more pleasing. Does not mean that it is without flaws...some shots seem a little too bright, and there is some color bleed. It could use a PROPER restoration, but it does look and feel like a movie made in 1950.

Now, this being said... does anyone know how to capture the film from the DVD and turn it into an AVI file? Or Mov? Or anything playable from a computer?

Is anyone interested in copies of this dvd?

I am SOOO jealous! I had this one for months and it didn't download anything beyond 25%. I've started it again, hopefully it will now complete. Would you care to seed it?

I have downloaded it and turned it into an mkv file (better than avi, didn't lose quality either). I would post it here but I'm pretty sure that's not allowed (plus my internet connection is pretty slow)

Got the Blu-ray for Christmas. At first, I hesitated a bit, since I knew it had all these restoration problems I read about online, but I finally convinced myself to buy it.
Anyway, I watched the Blu-ray a few days ago, and although I agree with all of you, concerning the colors and all that, I really liked how the movie looked. The restoration seemed to have much darker colors than the one from the 2005 Platinum Edition DVD (from my point of view, at least). The new bonus features are enjoyable, but have little or no connection at all with Cinderella. I was mostly disapointed by Diane Disney Miller's introduction, which I know may sound extremely ridiculous to some. I expected to hear her talk about the movie (more than what I heard here, anyway), the bonus features found on this particular release, maybe some words about the restoration, but it proved to be an advertisement for the Walt Disney Family Museum.
I really enjoyed watching the film, I haven't seen it in a long, long time, and it brought back many memories.
I know you guys are bothered by the flaws the restoration has, but don't let that stop you from enjoying the film. After all, it's not the colors that made us love it in the first place, right?

I was rather dissapointed by her introduction too! I expected her to talk about fond memories of the film or how special it was but she just said it like oh it's a film that was made.

Actually the colors are a part of why I love the film. It is personally the most beautiful film to me, I loved all the pink and blue and silver colors in it, they especially seemed to use a lot of purple, my favorite color. The restoration maintained some of that, but it still isn't right, and it should be done right! But yes I love watching the film even with the problems. : )

As a comparison I took a cap from the Walt Disney Presents episode "All About Magic" (it's on the Gold Collection SitS DVD). It's not in colour, but does show the effects animation more clearly, like the laserdisc caps:



It's not the exact frame, but close, and of an unrestored image to prove the 1995 job was correct.

Oh yes... I have done this myself. I have taken frames from the Cinderella PE and turned them into greyscale, and then compared them to the same frame from the SitS dvd... the tones are completely off, and so are the line thicknesses, and lengths at times...

I couldn't find the actual Cinderella Diamond thread, so thought I would put it here; how come France has the sequel's being released separately, and the UK still doesn't ?

France seems to be pretty out of the blue. They just kinda do whatever they feel like doing. They have amazing cover art and separate releases.

It is terribly annoying if this won't see release over here...

Hey guys (especially DisneyDuster),

I have a thought. So we are all glad that the laserdisc preserved an unrestored/untampered version of Cinderella.

I was going thru my Peter Pan Platinum dvd, and was looking at that read-along crap thing on disc 2, which is pretty much the ENTIRE movie with "special" subtitles. It looks very different from the film on the 1st disc...and its visual quality reminded me of the unrestored Cinderella.

Is the Peter Pan on the second disc an un-restored version of the film???
