I imagine it cost about the same as the Tinker Bell movies. Being that the animation was outsourced and this is essentially a direct-to-video movie plopped into cinemas, I can't imagine the budget being too massive.

The animation looks great. But the story looks dead set on recycling every single thing from both Cars films  ..

Ah well. We'll see.

It's definitely funny that "Pixar" is nowhere to be found on this. Even in the "from the world of 'Cars'" part. Do they really think simply not putting the name there will save this movie from tarnishing the Pixar brand?

To be fair, everything here looks 100% on the level of Cars 2. Whether that's a good or bad thing, I'll leave up in the air haha.

I was literally just thinking this when I was viewing the topic earlier. Does Lasseter feel like putting this under the Disney name was somehow protecting Pixar? I can see why others from Pixar wouldn't want to be associated but the branding is just strange.

Pixar normally stamps their mark evvvvverywhere (as most studios do); and in this trailer it was conspicuous from its absence! Looked like a terribly long trailer for a new line of toys.

Such a mess.

It's even more strange when you consider that Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which wasn't even CG-animated, was branded as Disney/Pixar.

Well, at that time, I don't think Pixar had the power yet to say "no, we don't want our logo on that." Though they did the opening animation for it, but I imagine that was much to Lasseter's chagrin, since he hated the show.

True but it still seems odd they're being "ashamed" of putting the Pixar name anywhere in the publicity materials for a project that Lasseter spearheaded and pushed for it to get a theatrical release. In fact, they're going out of their way to remove any Pixar references in the press. By having the director of the Cars films directly involved in the production of Planes makes the film far more Pixarian than any of the DTV sequels ever were WDAS.

Planes gets PG rating (surprising there) and the Blu-ray already planned:

http://animatedviews.com/2013/planes-ra ... -december/

"While the official website for Disney’s Planes says the film is not yet rated, IGN and Blu-ray.com claim the MPAA has given the Cars spinoff a PG rating. Both Cars and its 2011 sequel were rated G – a rating which proved controversial for the latter film as parents found it too violent for younger kids. Interestingly, IGN also lists Planes as hitting store shelves on December 31, although the date should be taken with a grain of salt for now. In the meantime, folks can check out the latest poster for Planes at Walt Disney Studios UK’s Facebook page."

The MPAA rating system can be hit and miss at times. Toy Story 3 was able to get away with a G rating, which I didn't think it should just for the incinerator scene alone-should have been PG.

Aw, I showed the kids I nanny the trailer today :) they're so excited for it. I don't think I'll mind this one, these kids have made me numb to cars. It looks on the level of the first Cars, maybe a little smarter? Plus Priyanka of whom I'm a big fan.

ftr: they never ask for Cars 2, they just like the toys from it

Many box-office observers are placing big bets on Despicable 2 and Monsters University, the follow-up to the beloved Monsters, Inc., which grossed $562.8 million in winter 2001. Planes is more of an unknown, since it won't bear the Pixar seal of approval. It was produced by DisneyToon Studios, the studio's direct-to-DVD label. The test scores were so high that Disney says that Lasseter and his team decided to go the theatrical route.

Some have questioned whether consumers will be confused by the absence of Pixar's name on advertising for Planes. And rivals say the theatrical run is a pure merchandising play. "Let's call a spade a spade," one producer says.

"Planes does take place in the same world as Cars, so it's not crazy to think there be may be some confusion," says Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn. "But the bottom line is that it's not a Pixar film … ultimately it's about whether audiences are going to enjoy themselves at the theater, and with this movie they will."
