They destroy the old editions? I would think that Disney would save them all for the program where you register your DVDs and can buy a cheap replacement from Disney if yours is broken...?

From my experience working in a store with DVDs, I can tell you what the studios usually do is this: Every so often, they send a list of titles and quanities to the store, asking for them to be send back. Usually these are titles that either didn't sell during a promotion, or extra stock of new releases, with the occasional "title about to be rereleased". As for what the studios do with them is anyones guess, they could possibly be destroyed, but most likely they stored in warehouses, or resold to other retailers.

Ever wonder where those copies of rare titles that suddenly find their to your local Walmart or where ever? Chances are, they've been lying around a warehouse or other retailer since the inital release.

Is there any news on the release of this Special Edition? I am really interested in this release!

It would make sense if they cancelled it since I ebayed my old copy. They do it to me all the time. If I hold onto a dvd until the SE comes out then I can't get squat for it & if I sell it when they announce but the prices are still high they always end up cancelling it. I'm a born loser.

The site was never up. The trailer's advertised site has never worked.

But canceling special editions is nothing new.

I have an ad in one of my Disney DVDs that said the Lilo & Stitch Special Edition was coming that fall. That DVD is like 4 years old.

They may have decided this couldn't sell.

I noticed they haven't taken the Gold Collection DVD off their site. They stopped the Bedknobs DVD and wrote "special edition coming soon" but not for Black Cauldron.

The delay could relate to a decision to release it as a 25th Anniversary Edition (25th for Disney's 25th, oh Mickey and your symmetry in numbers) or possibly a Blu-ray release. As far fetched as the other option may sound, if a Lorwy 1080p restoration already exists it wouldn't be so hard to do and perhaps Disney has realized the only way to truly make a profit out of this obscure title is to hype up it's importance to the general public and appeal to it's fan base by putting out a quality release.

Disney has already shown with Pete's Dragon's upcoming DVD that they are willing to try more to appeal to their fans (perhaps now that D23 can be an advertising tool?) and while the Vault Disney extensiveness may be gone there appears to be some attempt to do that kind of bonus content again if disc space allows it and the title is obscure enough.

Well, if they decide to cancel this release, I will be really mad.

So will I! Granted that TBC isn't one of my favorite films, but I was really excited to see it get a new release. I was also excited to potentially see this new restoration it's apparently had. I just don't know why we havn't heard any more about it if Disney were still planning on releasing it.

I have a bad feeling about this. I think if this was going to happen we'd have gotten SOMETHING by now. I'm getting major flashbacks to The Aristocats -- it was like, a month before the supposed release and there was NO information on it, then it was announced it was getting delayed.

I'm willing to bet the farm the same thing will happen here. But I'd love to be proven wrong!

Ugh.. I thought it had already been delayed from its supposed June 16th release. And they pushed it back to August. The Black Cauldron is one of my favorites and I have been anxiously waiting for its special edition for far too long. When it wasn't released in June I was upset.. but if it doesn't get a release at all.. ergh. The Gold Collection DVD does it no justice.. I want my Special Edition darnit!

Better bonus features.. sure. But Blu-Ray - forget it. No way that's happening. I'm not so much upset that it is being delayed as I am it being scrapped or delayed for a.. long time. They give us the trailer over half a year ago and nothing more is said about it.. hrmph.

You do realize this is Disney we're talking about, right? Since when(in the last few years) have they given decent treatment to a DVD that, without an advertising budget, sold less than the expected hundreds of millions of copies per month? Name one.

Disney never said June, so no DVD on that date shouldn't have been a dissapointment. Fan rumors should always be disregarded (despite being a lot of fun! )

Also, did they even issue a press release? Wasn't it just the trailer?

I want to point out that many of you have speculated that this has been pushed back to give it a great release with an immaculate restoration and worthwhile bonus features, and I'm not saying you are wrong, but don't get your hopes up. After all, this is the same studio that delayed the "2-Disc Special Edition" of The Aristocats, claiming the reason was to provide better bonus features. When that disc was actually released, it was scaled down to a single disc set with a new game and a stupid title.

While many of us are fans of The Black Cauldron, remember that your average DVD buyer doesn't even know it exists. If they wait a year and market it as "25th Anniversary Edition," it is more likely to get attention than a simple "Special Edition" would. And who knows? Perhaps this was Disney's plan all along? They stuck a trailer on a few DVDs and perhaps it sparked some interest in people who had never heard of it. So in a year, if they see another add for the 25th anniversary, they might think "Oh wow! This is a classic Disney film that I should probably own." Blind buy, probable disappointment, future distrust in how Disney markets their movies. The end.

Disney wouldn't have to pay Lowry to make a new transfer they could just use the existing one and sell it as "new" because it has never been put out in region 1. It's speedy arrival to Blu-ray could catch public attention and make the film seem more important along with a "25th Anniversary" banner on the cover.

As for bonus content, Disney is already making some new content so a bit more effort on their part could help be a selling pint. They probably wouldn't do a 2-Disc DVD but given the new stuff prepared for Pete's Dragon it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

They did it for Pinocchio, that older restoration was never seen in the US, if I remember correctly.
And by the way, was The Black Cauldron restored by Lowry? Do we know for sure, I mean?
Even for a Blu-ray release, it probably has to be re-done again. I doubt it if it was done in HD. And since this was shot in 70mm, I expect a great looking film, not the crappy letterbox version we have now.

Well, the VHS of Cauldron sold 5 million copies, and Disney gave elaborate home video treatment to the box office bombs Three Caballeros and Alice in Wonderland, as well as Tron -- I realize I'm not talking about DVD sales, and I never said I thought the delay for Cauldron was was caused by a decision to give the film some more bonus features. I only said if they wanted to delay it, then by all means, delay it if that means the title receives its due respect.
