I'm not so sure after a sub-$9 million opening day. They can claim "#1 Movie" but that doesn't lessen the sting of an opening that matched the similarly underperforming The Golden Compass. If Dawn Treader follows that trajectory, its headed for around $75 million domestic. Like that film, its only hope is overseas gross.

Why are you comparing "Dawn Treader" to a loser film "Golden Compass" which was doomed from the day it was released. I wouldn't worry about "Dawn Treader" not making the goals set by the film company. Most theaters only had two showings on opening day because Friday is a school day and there aren't many cities that have theaters with daytime matinees on Friday.

We will see what the weekend totals are.

That gives me hope, New Line seriously considered making a sequel to that despite what happened to it. That movie did better internationally, and I'm sure that will be the case for this one. I find Voyage of The Dawn Treader to have a bigger chance to getting a sequel than Golden Compass ever did. Also, I hope VTDT picks up; what's the competition besides Tron?

Then again, Prince Caspian made almost as much as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe on its opening day in America and it really strong competition: Indy 4, Sex and The City, and Iron Man.

I went to the midnight showing. To sum my thoughts up in the fewest of words without ranting: The best [character] parts were Eustace, Reepicheep, Aslan and the Dawn Treader itself. (They should've been the best anyway because their the stars of the book.) Not an excellent adaptation of the book, but still a good film. 3.8/5 s

I haven't found a place where this is 100% explained, but I kind of get the reason why.
Caspian is King, and it's now a few years into his rule. A portion of the Telmarines are gone and the Narnians are restored resulting into N>T. Supposedly Caspian "losing" his accent shows his newly entitled kingship and how Narnia is back at peace. (Bluntly: Narnia is now back to it's rightful English roots.)
Some fans don't like it because it breaks continuity. I just prefer it to the obvious Montoya influenced accent in PC which I found highly distracting.

Silver Chair will probably get made. Just like after PC during the in-between stage it felt for a bit that Dawn Treader might not happen. What I'm more concerned about is the all-around quality of the production. (If it's not too much trouble, we don't just want Easter eggs, we'd also like some A-grade script writers please.)

Fixed. There is no future after a $24 million opening weekend (in 3-D! no less) on an over $100-million movie. Budget can't go much lower with all the effects needed. This would need amazing legs and ridiculous international earnings to continue.

Having not seen the movie, I think dropping the awful Inigo accent was more important than any reason justifying the lack of continuity.

Agreed. With the $155 million budget listed and earnings far less than both previous Narnia movies I don't see any more being made. Disney's probably very happy they dropped this franchise (especially after they've already profited from the most successful one).

Yogi Bear and TRON opening Friday may also ensure a steep decline for next weekend's earnings.

Well it's official. A 24,5 million $ weekend. For comparison, that's roughly 1,3 million less than The Golden Compass' opening weekend in 2007, which didn't have 3D tickets to inflate the overall gross. Also less than half of Prince Caspian's opening weekend in 2008.

Disney executives must be jumping for joy right about now.

I'm aware of Walden Media being behind the production, but had Disney distributed this they would have at least done so much more promotion for it. I don't care if Demi Lovato sang the theme song, but at least they would have aired promos on ABC, ABC Family, Disney Channel, and Disney XD nonstop and some on other channels. I don't understand why Fox would pick the franchise up and not go full throttle on the revival.

Apparently the movie has made $81 million outside the US and Canada, enough for Fox to claim:

Looks like we may have another Prince of Persia on our hands (terrible domestic good, but good foreign gross). The question remains whether or not it will be enough for Fox to make back its money and how it will hold up in the coming weeks.

Now, if UD had a "like" button. I know it will do well at least in Mexico and The UK. 105 million? That is more than I expected as well.

I'm sure it's more than what most expect and I doubt Fox cares where the money comes from, but even if it makes $300 million outside the US its worldwide total would still not be much more than $400 million with those poor domestic numbers. Is that enough for a $155 million movie to have major profits? Fox may claim to be happy but I'm sure there's still some doubt there.

I just saw it, and I have to say that I thought it was phenomenal. It's a real pity it's not doing so hot at the box office: there were like 15 people at my showing, and it's only the third day of release! I'd give it a 9/10, because the beginning was very rushed and uninteresting. I'll share more later, cause I want to sleep...

You can't compare Disney boxoffice to non-Disney boxoffice.

I have always maintained that there are people out there who judge a movie by the critical praise or non-praise that a movie gets. I don't let critics change my view of a movie, no matter what.

Rotten Tomatoes is a good example. I don't think I have agreed with their supposed "critics" about most films that I liked. It's my money, and my time and I don't think another person has the right to try to sway my judgement of a movie just because they didn't like it.

I am taking my three oldest grand kids to see this movie this afternoon after school and that will be the fourth time I will have seen this "great" movie.

If I like a movie i'll decide it for myself...not some critic's word...I mean Critics have been screwy since the first DAC came out...if people listened to critics about Snow White via Disney's Follie or the colors are too bright for the screen to watch for an hour long movie....

people are picky abou what movies to see these days and Narnia hasnt a whole load of marketing the way TRON does. I just hope FOX doesnt dump the series.

Well... I could respond to that, but in my experience the first person to resort to name-calling has already lost the argument.

I have seen a lot of promos of this movie. It seems to be quite interesting. I am planning to watch it soon.
