finally saw the world famous :

and I've got to give it :

The acting's good, the visual design is great, all production values are high enough... But the director makes
quite a few mistakes. He just borrows
way too much from The Last House on the Left and The Evil Dead, characterization is sacrificed for a lot of bad humor, many sections of dialogue are in
very poor taste, and the logic just becomes perposterous. Though, the music was great and the final twist was very amusing.
and, the fairly infamous :

What a
great first half. With this movie, the tension is stronger than the gross-out quotient and it wins big points for that. Nobody enjoys watching torture movies. So I have to give it kudos for the great emphasis on nature. And it
really looked like it was going somewhere, too. But like all horror movies this decade, the filmmakers just reach a point where they throw up their hands and say, "I don't care what we do anymore." All the great work from the beginning slowly begins to disintegrate.
First of all, the killer talks. And talks. And talks. Granted, he's surely a great deal less annoying than a good many other movie killers. But in the kinds of situations we're watching... Who exactly is going to enjoy him smiling, laughing, and cracking jokes???
Secondly, the "rear view mirror" shot. Hello?-who didn't see that coming from a million miles away? It's a famous urban legend that you always look into the ... before getting into a ... The shot is so obvious, that now you know exactly how the scene will play out.
Next thing, the "convenient driver" double-hitter. One victim is saved and the other doesn't live. Is that consistent with the movie? Surely not. Isn't it completely obvious given that when the 2nd victim is on the run, the movie still has a good chunk of time left, but when the 3rd victim takes off, the movie's almost over? Which one do you think is going to make it??
And finally, the ending. That deserves the big, royal
WTF?!!! of the Year Award in Horror (that would have been 2005). Is the director insane to end the movie this way? He'd have to be. I think it stopped being a horror movie and abruptly became a conspiracy thriller. And the "disappearing in the sun" shot was so ridiculous, I didn't know how to contain myself from almost laughing. It was so shocking, that I couldn't laugh. But so surprising, that I had to make
some kind of noise. And I did.
During any and every point in that first 40-45 minutes, if you had asked me, I would have said this movie is going to beat Hostel for #1 Torture-horror movie. Alas, Hostel is "still the one" to watch if you must watch one torture horror film. This movie will have you seeing spots.
and, the "Cult Classic" :

This one's going in the history books as one of the WORST MOVIES I've EVER SEEN. And that's
saying something. It just barely outdoes the nearly-equally atrocious Dead Hate the Living (1999). It seems to be an "intentionally bad" film that tries to out-bad the most intentionally-bad movie on the planet (whatever that may be)... It succeeds. But, it's not fun. At all. If anyone's actually listening and you want to see a really good "intentionally bad" horror-comedy, make it the horrifyingly hilarious masterpiece- Cannibal! The Musical. It's actually entertaining. Not like this crap. Hell, just watch Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers.
and,

Some truly beautiful images and sequences... But... it's almost completely stupid and pointless. And most of the acting is off. Nothing means anything. Watch
only if that's your thing.
