Wow, I'm surprised there seems to be so much dislike for Snow White too. For me, it's my second favorite Disney animated feature after Sleeping Beauty. Even though it's loaded with bits of business that might seem unnecessary as Will Finn pointed out on the Sleeping Beauty DVD, I think the plot itself is very tightened and flows nicely, and is a beautiful example of Walt and his storytelling abilities. I absolutely adore the German fairy tale book like illustration to the entire film, and even though some animation might not be advanced as the later features, most of it just fantastic, especially for their first attempt at realistic figures.

I think what draws me the most however (like Sleeping Beauty) are the characters of the villain and the hero. While I enjoy the dwarfs and Snow White, Grimhilde and the Prince to me are probably my favorite from the film. My earliest memories about them I think stem from when I was a child and saw the 1993 re-release of the film when I wa six. Seeing Grimhilde on the giant screen, especially when the transformation ofher into the witch, forever impacted me. I think she is the only villain I can ever recall who scared me (that and combined with going on the original version of Snow White's Adventures at Disney World when I was four :p), and to me seems one of the most classiest. She's cold and beautiful, and always very calculating, giving careful thought to her plans.

As for the Prince, even though we barely know anything about him and that he really doesn't do much in he finished film, I still enjoy his character and his role in the graphic novel version. I personally find he's very handsomely drawn, and I love his voice and the tune "One Song." I think my appreciation for his character too has grown for me after seeing the deleted concepts for his original plot, and seeing him take part in the action in the comic book version of the film, with the love triangle and escaping to find Snow White. So to me he's up high on my list of favorite Disney male heroes/princes.

However, even though I stated I don't care much about Snow White and the dwarfs themselves, I still find them highly enjoyable characters. The characteristics of the dwarfs are wonderful and I still find their antics amusing and funny each time that I watch the film. Their attachment to Snow White I think is what makes them especially endearing as well, particulary at the funeral sequence.

As for Snow White herself, maybe it's just me, but I just don't get all the hate over her voice. I have always particularly enjoyed it, and never once found her voice or personality annoying in the least. I enjoy her optimistic outlook and that certain childlike naivtivity she has about herself. You don't have to be a masochist to enjoy Snow White's voice.

Anyway, I recently just received in the mail an interesting book on the making of Snow White, and I was flipping through and noticed mentioned of a song called The Lady In The Moon. Originally it was meant to be the song in place of where the Silly Song sequence is now. I'm curius if in the upcoming Platinum we'll see that materialize as some form of a demo or not. Although considering the Sleeping Beauty UK book made mention of two deleted songs that didn't make it on the DVD, I'm not holding my breath. :p

If I'd never seen the movie and were told to listen to Snow White's voice for the first time on an audio track of the "I Wonder" song, I would very likely imagine I was listening to a singing sheep. I'm not saying that to bash Snow White's voice. I can say that I like her voice, it's so peculiar that I wonder about it. ^_^

I'm not really surprised but I am very excited that this film is getting re-restored. I watched my 2001 DVD the other day and I really began to notice how certain parts of the film were blurry. I also noticed a lot of fading in the backgrounds. The whole thing seemed too light to me. I'm pretty sure that parts of it were supposed to look a bit better. I also feel that part of the voice issue with Snow is a lack in sound quality. I don't feel the soundtrack was given an appropriate restoration either. I really have a lot of high hopes for the new release!

As far as my opinion on the film... It's definately not one of my favorites but I respect it's place in history. It is afterall a begining, but not even Walt himself believed it to be his best work. Last I checked he was always trying to do better with each film, and to me that seems to say that although it held a special place in his heart he didn't believe it was the best. I get very annoyed when people speak of it as the greatest Animated Classic and then say everyone else who dissagrees isn't respecting it. It is a remarkable film but it does have flaws IMO, and there are many films that followed that deserve just as much recognition.

I actually LOVE Snow White's voice. I enjoy that style of operatic singing and find it easier to listen to then (fill in the blank) contemporary pop singers who overact (or I should say oversing) their way through bland pop and add too many syllables just to show off that their voice is capable of doing so. But I digress... :D

As for the film, I LOVE it, and it has nothing to do with the hype about it being the "first". If it isn't in my top 10 DACs it's only because I love so many of them. The songs are catchy and memorable, the dwarves are charming, the animal forest friends are cute as can be, and the Queen/witch is such an evil (rhymes with witch) that you can't help but root for poor Snow White.

Oh, and the ending makes me cry EVERY TIME, first tears of sadness which turn to joy when Snow White wakes up, the sublime transcendence of death...

Viva Snow White, "the fairest of them all"!

Are there any Snow White Platinum Edition Cover Art Images yet? I'm anxious to see any cover art for the Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs second Platinum Edition , and to read of the planned extras for this edition! Surely something new must have come to light since the original Snow White Platinum Edition?

I already shared a brief thought on this film, but I'll go into deeper explenation.

I love Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It's definitly in my "Top Ten DAC List." Honestly, her voice doesn't bother me in the least bit. I think it's sweet and innocent. Maybe the reason her voice is so high is to emphasize the fact that she's a young teenager, barely a young adult. Because the way she's drawn, she almost looks to be 18 or so.

We really shouldn't be judging a film based on the lead's voice, either. I mean, I know it's definitly distracting for some, but I think we should be looking at the more important things in the story.

When Walt Disney advised his animators working on his first full length animated motion picture Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs he said that he wanted to the Wicked Queen to be a combination of the Big Bad Wolf and a Benda Mask !

I never knew what a Benda Mask was, or who W.T.Benda was , until I discovered this clip on You Tube whilst I was looking for the music of American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk , and found An Appreciation Of The Art Of W.T Benda set to Gottschalk music : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ky4uUTYHnm4

Haha, I think its the other way around. Because there's almost no story (most of Walt's films seemed to lack a strong plot), you focus on the characters. But since I like Snow White's voice it's not a problem for me. That's whats so endearing about Walt's films. The characters are so beautiful you don't need to focus on the plot to be entertained/enchanted.

I just hope The Goddess of Spring will be included this time. Last time, i think it was only those in Region 1 who could see this short.

(It would also have been cool if the black and white footage which was never used, such as when they are eating soup, would have been completed for the occasion, even if it will probably never happen.)

When will Disney reveal the extras on the Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition DVD/Blu Ray due for an October 2009 release?

I hope that these will include the Boil Cauldron Boil - Witch At The Cauldron pencil tests which were on the Laserdisc release some years back but which were not included in the extras on the last Snow White Platinum DVD release.

I look forward to seeing the Cover Art for the upcoming Snow White Platinum Edition too!

I see from Amazon that Disney is releasing a Gustav Tenggren edition of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs this version is due for an August 2009 release.

Deco King, stop creating Snow White threads. I am tired of merging your threads to the existing discussion thread. Any new information on the Snow White re-release (including cover art) will be posted to this thread when we receive it. Until then, you will have to wait patiently like the rest of us.

Yea, and just to give you a little bit of a prediction, the most likely that Disney will release stuff or that we will see stuff about Snow White's 2009 Platinum Edition release...will be very close to when Pinocchio's Platinum Edition is coming out, or from how things have been lately, probably just right after Pinocchio's Platinum Edition comes out. Sorry but, that's probably what's going to happen, so please wait till then!

Gustav Tenggren Snow White art book due out September 2009

As it says above Disney's publishing arm is bringing out an art book version of Snow White illustrated by Gustav Tenggren's illustrations the book is due out August/September 2009 , so they are obviously going to give the Disney DVD/Blu Ray release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs a big build up.

I really do hope that someone will have the wit to produce a version for the American , and worldwide audience of English speakers , of Pierre Lambert's magnificent volume of Blanche Neige , and published in French , by French publisher Demons Et Merveilles ,by far the superior book over the Steven Ison Snow White - An Art In It's Making.
