But it looks just like better done cel-shading. With more flowy movement.
There's this part where a door closes and I remember noticing the detail of the frame on the door just looked like flat black lines on a 3D white door.
If this is all Disney will do for hand-drawn in the future...I am aghast.
*facepalm* You just don't get it. You SHOULD do research, Mr. I-Can't-Handle-Memes-Nor-Jokes.

That might be what it looked like to you but that isn't what it is.
That's why he didn't say what it is.
Even though I don't agree with Duster that it looks like Sofia, I was underwhelmed by the animation as well, after all I'd read about it prior to seeing Paperman. Don't really get the Second Coming of Christ that people consider this technique, but I suppose it's possible it could improve in the future. The only real interest I have in it is a possible refuge for 2D, even if it's just a half-life.

That's a big part of its appeal to me as well. The fact that perhaps through this technique hand-drawn animation could be kept somewhat alive at Disney.

As much as I like the technique (yes I saw it in youtube, in crappy quality, now I want to go to see it in the big screen!

) I am also hoping that it will make way to some pure 2D movies, since the technologies are so complicated now that its not far off the day when some animators will say: "hey y'know, some long time ago they did it in a much more simple way..."
But also, think that this is just the beginning of something new, maybe it will change to be simpler and more good looking than is now so it gets on par with traditional animation, like it happened with other technologies that Disney used back in the day, like the CAPS System.

Making it simpler is kinda the whole point actually. They want to get the same appeal you get drawing every frame without actually having to draw every frame. The more you can automate without loosing appeal the more the technique will catch on.

Yes, now that I've seen it, the only reason I care for this technique is it keeps hand-drawn animation alive...sorta.
I wish I could say the animation is something amazing and, well, good, but you know, maybe so many of you see what I can't see.
And haha Divinity second coming is what it sounded like. How witty.

Is Paperman online somewhere? If not, where did those gifs come from?

Disney released a special montage for their animated releases with clips of Paperman included:

Wonderful. Disney really outshines the competition this year. Unless Paranorman stages an upset, they have it in the bag.

Ok, now that I've seen some video footage in high def I can say Paperman DOES look great, the kind of, light-shade dynamic in the guy's hand when he gets back his paper from Megs face is really a good detail, maybe they have to make an effort to make it look less like CG, because at times I can see the CG part of it, but it looks so great!
To Sotiris, Disney Duster, Disney Divinity, I get your skepticism but, I think with a little tweaking and stuff it will look better, and I think animators will push for a more traditional way of animating by drawing even if its doen in a Wacom tablet, versus the 3D animating process, I think it could be done.
Sorry because I clicked quote instead of edit and I posted my own quote XXD!

I want real hand-drawn, not what seems to me to be fake hand-drawn. Oh well.
I also had a problem with the story. The paper leads the protagonists back to how they originally were. Nothing's changed, but all of a sudden the paper makes them wanna stay with each other and be in love.

Meg looking back meant she regretted that she would likely never see him again. It was the magic (you'd think you of all people would enjoy this) that brought them together.
It's a simple story about a missed connection, not a full fledged feature story.
And the animation is stunning. Instead of complaining you should just be happy that the hand drawn animators are working on a short at the moment. As posted before in another topic, from the animation guild blog:
Some of the hand-drawn crew are working on a real interesting short* that will (I'm told) be out with Frozen next year.
And seeing as how John Kahrs is reportedly doing a 90 second or so test with the paperman technique, it's safe to assume this could be hand drawn. And it will be out next year with Frozen.
Don't know why I bother though. Is anyone else as tired as I am of the endless 'but it's not hand drawn animation, stupid Disney!' complaints? It's becoming SO annoying and repetitive. And it's in virtually every topic.

Totally with you. Endless circles of this debate. I wish we could move forward and be excited about Disney's future, rather than pining for the past.
Duster, the whole point of the story is that they had a chance to connect, and they didn't take it. They both regretted it, as so often happens in real life - you see someone and think "what if she was the one?" And then you never see her again. In this short, they are given a second chance to make that connection.

Am I the only one to notice that George and Meg seem like the only characters in the short movie that literally look hand drawn? I just noticed it watching it now in the theater.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm sure they spent much more time making the hand-drawn animation on the two main characters more prominent. The secondary characters do still have the line work, but it's more subdued.

Yeah. And this was my sixth time seeing it, along with Wreck-It Ralph.

If you think they’re going in a good direction, then
you can be excited. More power to you (the whining about the complaining is just as annoying, just so you know). I, personally, don’t.
Even without the hand-drawn complaints (I mean, we get to have 3 to 7
whole minutes of not-even-fully hand-drawn animation--what an achievement!), their last three movies have been average at best, very far from groundbreaking or "moving forward," and if anything
Frozen looks worse. They're just making money. If that's a reason to get excited, I just might have orgasmic convulsions the day
Madagascar 7 is released.
I will give you that this new technique is something to be excited about, and I'm glad it's getting more chances even if I'm not particularly enamored with it right now, despite everything else.

Fair enough, fair enough. But I disagree about the previous three movies (although Winnie the Pooh, while aesthetically gorgeous, was nothing all that exciting)... I think the studio is definitely on the upswing both creatively and technically.
