Am I the only one getting a big "If I Never Knew You" vibe from "I see the light"? The way it is structured with each character singing a part of the song then ending on a duet, the soft melody that rises at the very end and the fact that its a love song about how the presence of the other person has changed their lives forever reminds me of the Pocahontas song.

Of course, "I see the light" isn't EXACTLY like "If I Never Knew You" but it's very similar.

Take a listen:

pap64 I definitely agree with you, perhaps Alan Menken thought since that song got cut the from the original version of "Poca" this was his take to take that concept to the big screen :P

I felt the same way too. Both are great songs, but I think I prefer "If I Never Knew You." Granted, I'm biased as that's my absolute favorite of the romantic love songs in Disney's canon. But I'm sure a few dozen more listens of "I See the Light" will make me like it just as equally, or drive me crazy. Only time will tell.

I may be going crazy (TOO LATE!), but "I See The Light" also sounds a lot like "If Only" from The Little Mermaid Broadway!

OK, "If Only" is radically different since it's a quartet, but it too also starts very softly, builds up to a strong melody and it is also a song about the character's feelings during one of the key scenes in the plot.

Listen and think if I am right or being silly:

I honestly cannot believe I'm saying this, but this FEELS LIKE DISNEY. the song is incredible. Everything I hoped for. I got that warm fuzzy feeling on the last chord that I get everytime I hear A Whole New World. I'm speechless. Menken, you just got yourself another Oscar.

And though you might miss some of the lush sounds from BatB or HoND, each movie had songs and sounds that fit a theme or meshed with the picture, and it seems "Tangled"s theme is much more personal and simple
Yeah, but I guess I'm a sucker for complex music. :P I've been listening to the song and I admit it's growing on me.

No you're not being silly, it sounds similar, I would say that a difference between the songs is that If Only is a much more vigorous song, in the sense that they get very passionate (singing wise) and I See the Light stays about the same level throughout the song.

Now since people are saying what the song reminds them of. I See the Light reminds me of Your Heart Will Lead You Home from the Tigger Movie:

And here are the lyrics from what I could hear

Rapunzel:
All those days watching from the windows
All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I've been
Now I'm here, blinking in the starlight
Now I'm here, suddenly I see
Standing here, it's all so clear
I'm where I'm meant to be

And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you

Flynn:
All those days chasing down a daydream
All those years living in a blur
All that time never truly seeing
Things, the way they were
Now she's here shining in the starlight
Now she's here, suddenly I know
If she's here it's crystal clear
I'm where I'm meant to go

Rapunzel & Flynn:
And at last I see the light

Flynn:
And it's like the fog is lifted

Rapunzel & Flynn:
And at last I see the light

Rapunzel:
And it's like the sky is new

Rapunzel & Flynn:
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once, everything is different
Now that I see you, now that I see you

Feel free to correct me. :)

I do think they could've used a little less 'and'
especially at this part:

And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright

Wow, a very beautiful song indeed! I'm studying in the UK, but going home to Minnesota for Christmas. I'm SO annoyed I won't be seeing this opening day, but as soon as I get off the airplane on December 5th, I'm heading to the movie theatre haha :D

I love Mandy's vocals. Which is funny, because when I first read that she was cast I was a little disappointed. But her voice really does have that Disney quality. It will take me a while to adjust to Zac's voice, it is so dang breathy (and I am going for a vocal degree, so these things stand out to me more)... but the song's melody is so simple and beautiful, and really does have that Disney vibe. Part of me is a little disappointed that "Tangled" is going to be the movie that I wished "Princess and the Frog" was: I love 2D animation so much! But at least Disney is getting back to their roots storytelling wise, which as it turns out, really is the most important!

Off to give "I See the Light" another listen or three! :)

kinda funny that they used this song in the featurettes already..im just watching the featurette: creating the look, again and the background-music sounds really familiar now, haha..maybe there more songs to dicover in their other featurettes...btw i still don't know if to like the song: i see the light, it does sound really broadway-esque, but what works on broadway, doesn't always work on the screen...and it isn't as memorable as earlier disney songs, but it does sound really romantic tough..

Thank you so much! :D

I'm kinda frustrated that they haven't included the other songs in the "For Your Consideration Best Song" category. I know that this one has the best chances and that's why they are promoting it but they should promote all of them; they all need to get the same chance. Also, by including and promoting the other songs too we might get two Best Song nominations; who knows?

toky s right! it's when Rapunzel is looking at her painting above her fireplace it's a very shot snip-it

i have a question for phan! at the end when you say about the thugs getting their dream is this shown or is it voice over?
