I certainly hope it's the latter too, I also feel that a live action Alice in the CGI world would also make the film more marketable to a wider audience.
Not to mention for us Disney buffs there'd be the novelty of a live action Alice in an animated world, (again).

Crispin Glover officially cast as The Knave Of Hearts.
In the film, The Knave Of Hearts (Glover) is put on trial for stealing The Queen Of Hearts' tarts and is defended by Alice.
Disneykid wrote:Wonderlicious wrote:Also, does anyone think that the mix of live-action and motion-capture may hopefully mean something more like how Davy Jones was created? By that I mean the more fantastical non-human characters (Caterpillar, White Rabbit etc) being created by the help of motion-capture?
Actually, it looks like this film may be more like James and the Giant Peach. Some sources (which, of course, may just be liars) have been saying that you never see Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter themselves. Both of their characters are animated, so if that's the case with two human characters, that must be the case completely, especially since another source confirmed that the environment will be totally CG. All of the CG characters are confirmed as being based in motion capture, though, likely by the voice actors themselves. So it looks like the film will begin and end in live-action while the rest is animated. What remains to be seen is whether Alice herself will turn animated like James did, or if it'll be Mia herself surrounded by CG. I hope it's the latter since that would really emphasize how much of an alien she is in Wonderland.
I believe the reason you won't "see" Depp and Carter is because everything in Wonderland is going to be performance capture (like Beowulf.) So while technically you won't see them in human form, the characters will look like a computer animated version of each of them (and the other Wonderland characters as well.) While Alice will be human throughout.

Crispin Glover!
YAY!
I forget I liked him
So now we've definitely got the Queen of Hearts. And Cards for that matter! We're going to have both cards and chess pieces

Besides the very cool prospect of having Crispin in a Tim Burton movie, I admit I'm more excited to know that Helena's the Queens of Hearts, afterall, rather than the Red Queen. A rivarly between playing cards and chess pieces is something I hope gets played out.
As for the Rickman news, the very second Christopher Lee said that a "more suitable" actor had been cast as the caterpillar, I knew it had to be Alan Rickman. Fantastic casting choice! Now it really makes me wonder if Timothy Spall's going to be the White Rabbit in a sort of Sweeney Todd reunion.
The article reporting the Rickman news now finally reveals what role Michael Sheen is playing: the Cheshire Cat. So, here are some of the major Wonderland/Looking Glass characters yet to be announced:
The White Rabbit
The Dodo
The Duchess
The Cook
The March Hare
The Dormouse
The King of Hearts
The Gryphon
The Mock Turtle
The White King
The Live Flowers
The Walrus
The Carpenter
Humpty Dumpty
The Lion
The Unicorn
Of course, it's possible many of these will be cut out, but I think the White Rabbit, March Hare, Dormouse, King of Hearts, Walrus, and the Carpenter are shoe-ins based on what we know so far. I wouldn't be surprised to see another Burton regular or two show up in these roles.

I haven't read any more articles lately, but was Helena definitely confirmed to be the queen of hearts? There's still the possibility that someone else has been cast, and that Helena's "still" the Red Queen. (I'd love to see them both up there!).

Nothing's been concretely explained, no. The articles that announced Helena's casting kept referring to her as the Red Queen. But now we've got the article announcing Crispin's casting confirming that the Queen of Hearts is in the movie. It's already been said that Helena is the villain, so I can't see there being both a Queen of Hearts and a Red Queen, especially if the latter is going to be played more evil than manic. It would just get way too convoluted.
I think it's safe to guess both characters have been combined, but to what extent and under what name is unclear. Having a Knave of Hearts valdiates the idea of there being playing cards in the film, afterall. I can't see how they can incorporate both chess pieces and playing cards unless the two were on opposing sides. It'd be strange seeing Helena with an army of red chess pieces and cards while Anne has one of white chess pieces and...black cards (?). Plus, I noticed that all the articles that reported Helena's casting kept referring back to the Variety article, so it's posible Variety mistakenly called her the Red Queen and all the other articles just quoted that.
Yes, I realize I'm putting way too much thought into this, but I wouldn't have to if Disney would just give us a lengthy press release breaking down the plot and the entire cast.

IF the Walrus is part of the film... my vote goes for Richard Griffiths !
Nicole Kidman would make a good singing flower too

Just though I'd comment on how pleasing it is to see such a fine array of British actors in this.
At least I won't be bombarded by a slew of fake British accents.

While I shall reserve my judgement till the final film is released, he looks weird. Too much makeup. I know he is the MAD Hatter, but the makeup makes him look like the "FAB" hatter.

Am I the only one that likes it?
(And this is coming from someone who usually hates BOTH Tim Burton AND Johnny Depp!)
