Arguably, Belle is not your typical Disney princess, Jasmine is not your typical Disney princess, Pocahontas is not your typical Disney princess, Mulan is not a princess (but that's besides the point), but I guess there aren't readily soundbytes from Paige O'Hara, Linda Larkin, Irene Bedard and MingNa stating that their respective characters are "not your typical Disney princess."

The ironic thing is that math is not in Disney's favor. Three damsels in distress (possibly 4 depending on where you place Ariel) vs. 8 (or 9) who are modern, feminist, etc. Yeah, I think these days, it's safe to say that Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Anna ARE typical Disney princesses. It just the definition of typical that has changed . . .

Was just listening to the foreign versions of "Let it go" and I am in love with the way the german singer sings "In the light of day". I think this might be my favorite foreign version, what's yours?

She also does the voice of Elsa in Dutch and as someone who understands and speaks both languages I can say with 100% confidence the Dutch version is superior and flawless. She's somewhat restrained in German compared to her native tongue. That sentence you mentioned is, to me at least, in Dutch even better. The way she effortlessly switches between tones in such a high range without losing power or clarity is amazing.

Though Dutch is generally considered a harsh language and not pleasant for non-Dutch speakers, one thing is for sure, Willemijn Verkaik is freaking amazing and easily tops Idina in range and power. A Broadway belter if there ever was one. Compare any version of Willemijn singing Defying Gravity and you can hear she sings circles around Idina. (And I love Idina, don't kill me please).

^I second this. The Dutch version is my favourite foreign version. But then, being raised in a half-Dutch family, Dutch sounds very homey to me, even if I can't understand much. That aside, Willemijn Verkaik is fab. She's got serious pipes on her.

I actually think there are more international Elsa's being voiced by Elphaba actresses. Which makes sense because it vocally requires a similar voice.

I really like the Spanish, French, Italian and the Thai version (and coming from someone who knows nothing of Thai).

Though the Spanish translation is very similar to the original lyrics.

I don't know.... I fee like Idina emits more emotions through her singing, where the dutch version just feels like someone sitting behind a mic recording. (maybe it's because I don't understand Dutch), with that being said... Is there a version where Elsa actually sounds like her age/look? It always sounds like someone significantly older than her is singing.

The one I'm interested in hearing is Arabic, not only because i understand it, but I'm actually interested in seeing how they'll translate the lyrics. I know that they didn't dub any of the songs for Brave, maybe they will dub Frozen.
Tangled in arabic was good because the modern dialogue wasn't in your face like in English. I remember one of the lines "You want me to be the bad guy", which I always hated in english was perfect in arabic cause they stayed true to form and didn't say "Bad guy".... >__< I saw it last year so I don't remember much.

I'm no linguist, but I am presuming it's because a direct translation would be too long.

I'll compare the first stanza of "Let It Go" to a direct Hungarian translation.

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight (10 syllables)
Not a footprint to be seen (7 syllables)
A kingdom of isolation (8 syllables)
And it looks like I’m the Queen (7 syllables)

Hungarian direct translation (probably grossly inaccurate, as per Google translation):

A hó világít fehér a hegyen ma este (13 syllables)
Nem lábnyom látható (7 syllables)
A királyság az elszigeteltség (10 syllables)
És úgy néz ki, mintha én lennék a királynő (13 syllables)

So as you can see, most of the lines in the Hungarian version are longer. In order to fit them into the beat of the song, either the grammar would be lost, or the singer would need to speed-sing every other line.

And not only that, even if the lyrics were similar in syllable length, there's the issue of matching the mouth movement of the original film. Not all the lines will sync, but the more words that match the mouth movement, the more believable the song will be.

(I am not Hungarian, however, so I have no clue if a more direct translation was feasible but they decided not to do it.)

Lyrics are constantly changed when they're translated. It is hard to fit so many words in one line, especially when it's a fast spoken language translated to a slow one and vice versa.
With "Let it Go", it is really heavy on the lyrics side "Don't let them in....... Let them know" and the bridge. I actually find it amazing that some languages did translate the bridge.

a good example: Arabic "Part of your world"
for starters... the arabic version is "Part of that/your universe", not world. which I always found weird, but it matched with the rhythm.
I actually really like the arabic version of this song because it stays true to the lyrics as much as it can. my only criticism is the last few lines..

I agree about Willemijn Verkaik. Her voice is truly epic. I saw her live in the Dutch production of Wicked and I was blown away.

I was so happy when I heard she was voicing Elsa in the Dutch version. I don't think they could have picked a better person.

Also, Willemijn is currently playing Elphaba in the West End production of Wicked (she was also Elphaba on Broadway and Germany) so she was also present at the London premiere of Frozen. After the movie ended she actually performed the English version of 'Let it go' live. Somebody recorded part of it so if there were people out there wondering what she would sound like in English, see the video:

All we know right now is the singer name, her name is "Nesma Mahgoub" from Egypt.

Taei and NeverLand, when the Arabic version of Let It Go is released, please post it here! I don't understand Arabic, but Maltese is related to it in that it started off as Arabic about 800 years ago, and then continued to evolve. While it's very different nowadays, it's said to be similar enough for Arab speakers to understand it, or at least get the gist of what one is saying. It doesn't work the other way round though - I generally don't understand anything when I listen to Arabic, but I do detect familiar sounds. For that reason alone I want to listen to the Arabic version of Let It Go.
