Thanks! I managed to get a hold of the Mexican soundtrack. Here are my impressions.
Marco Antonio Solis' version of "Remember me" is much better than Benjamin Bratt's. You can tell he's more experienced, being a musician and all. He's more tonally correct, and the color of his voice is more pleasant. He also sings "Much Needed Advice" which is a brief song mixed with dialogue.
The lullaby version of "Remember Me" by Gael Garcia Bernal is quite affecting and will undoubtedly become a fan favorite. Gael also sings "Everybody Knows Juanita" which is nice too. There is a second lullaby version of "Remember Me" that's dubbed "Reunion" sung by Luis Angel that reminded me of "I Am Moana" due to it being a duet with his great-grandma.
"Un Poco Loco" and "The World Es Mi Familia" are cute, fun songs, even though the latter is very short. "Proud Corazon" is the best of the three and the most uplifting.
You already know how I feel about the "Remember Me" renditions by Carlos Rivera and Miguel. The former's stellar while the latter's pretty awful, partially due to Miguel's performance. The solo version by Natalia Lafourcade is an improvement over the duet as it has a better flow, structure and vocals.
I enjoyed all the covers of the pre-existing Mexican songs as well as the original "El Corrido de Miguel Rivera". "La Llorana" stands out the most with a powerful performance by Angelica Vale. "Un Mundo Raro ", "Besame Mucho", and "La Bikina" are all great covers. The performers selected are top-notch and a perfect fit for the genre of each song.
"Jalale" is a pre-existing, instrumental piece by the Mexican Institute of Sound. I didn't care for this one.
Michael Giacchino's score is pleasant as always but not particularly memorable.
All in all, it's a pretty great soundtrack with high production values and excellent performances. Too bad most of the renditions won't be included in the American soundtrack. If you can only buy one, I recommend getting the Mexican one for the extra songs.
