- It's more than an apple. It's the entire film. It's every little frame, every line from the animator's finger tips. It's the music and the characters and the stories and the voices and the colours and the emotion and the feel of the movie. It's not just about the movie anymore. It's about how we perceive the movie. And for something as grand and majestic as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a mere apple is a horrible way to represent the film. You must have every single character, every single emotion, every single facet of production, squeezed into one image. And it must be beautiful. It must rival the film itself in[/i] terms of what those marvelous animators accomplished so many years ago. It must be LIFE!
This is why I stay out of people's heads.
BrandonH wrote:I'd have to disagree that studios must use full-color artwork of characters on their DVD covers. Using an iconic image from a film on the cover can be extremely effective and classy. For example, the outer box of The Lion King's gift set has Rafiki's drawing of Simba against a black background. A non-Disney example would be the use of the Batman logo for the cover of the Batman (1989) DVD. There are times when showing major characters on the cover works, but covers like that are frequently too cluttered for my taste.
<snip>
I just tend to come down on the side of more minimalist artwork on posters and DVD covers.
I agree. After all, sometimes less is more. If I were inclined to base my DVD judgments on the cover art, I think something with one or two iconic objects/symbol looks better than a busy and crowded piece trying to shove in every major character.
Example:

The simplistic "Doctor + Companion" cover for Series Three (the same is done for Series One, Two, and Four)
versus

The crowded cover for the Easter Special "Planet of the Dead" featuring the Doctor, Lady Christina, a Tritovore, a bunch of metallic stingrays, the bus, etc. I'm surprised Malcolm Taylor and Captain Magambo aren't randomly inserted somewhere.
Or, for a Disney example:

Peter Pan and Tink, with Captain Hook's ship in the background
versus

Peter Pan's head (with a second star to the right) and Tink, with Hook, Smee, the Crocodile, Wendy, John, what little of Michael you can see, pixie dust, Hook's ship, the Indian tents, etc.

[quote="KubrickFan Because the movie itself is hand drawn, the cover has to be too? It's just an apple, for god's sake.[/quote]
The Dutch cover has nothing to offer anyone with any aesthetic appreciation it's total garbage - the Apple is straight out of cyberspace and has nothing to do with Disney ! The Aladdin cover is interesting the Dutch cover however has no appeal at all !!

Escapay...That was one of the best post I have ever read!
Thank you for that! I'm kinda sick right now (I have a high fever), so I really needed a good laugh. Thanks again!
I hope so.
Something like this:
[...]
I love this classic, mature posters that really represent the films anyway:
I really like them too, but, I don't like the Snow White cover. It's too empty for my likes.
The pictures you posted are really beautiful, but I just have a feeling the SW cover is missing someting the posters DO have.
The SW cover ONLY has a apple, while (for example) our two disc for BaTB (in my opinion one of the most beautiful cover we ever got in Holland, and the same one as the French edition) has so much more.
Not just the picture, but a feeling.

The light, the room, the rose.
Everything looks perfect!

BrandonH, I liked a lot of what you said, by the way.
Marky also with the leaving to the imagination thing, like
BrandonH.
EVERYbody...
How about this...
Some people are exaggerating that I said you need lots of bright color or lots of characters. That's not what I said.
And maybe I was exaggerating saying only one object is what you want.
What we all seem to want is more than one object, but not too many objects, and maybe one or two characters, but not too many characters. (For the cover of a film called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, though, all seven dwarfs is rather appropriate)
But I don't understand...WHY can't we see the character's faces, in the light, in the beautiful colors the film has?
There was never, ever a scene in the film where Belle and the Beast were covered in almost total darkness except for some light! You could actually say that was in Cinderella when the title character and the Prince dance in the dark with some light behind them from the palace, but anyway...
We want covers that represent the films. That means good art, hand-drawn (but digitally fixed up), and looking like the film. And come on, more than just one apple, or the characters completely in the dark...
And DID YOU NOTICE...that Snow White original poster art we ALL LOVE...actually has every single character from the film, even the huntsman, even the freakin' apple in the witch's hand? And yet it STILL looks classy and represents the film...

Disney Duster,
I see what you mean and you are right.
And I actually like that old Snow White poster very much.
Class has nothing to do with the amount of characters.
But it seems that nowadays the characters on the covers have to look extremely childish and like stickerbooks. I mean, compare this design to the Blu ray cover, that Bly ray cover is just pathetic.
And although you see clear, colored faces on them, it has nothing to do with the actual film.

Thank you.
And yes, you are right about that you just said, that's why I said these covers mainly need good art, should be hand-drawn, and look like the films. They need to be on-model, in drawing and in color.

oddly enough most of the characters in the original posters arent on-model (the prince and the dwarfs' eyes especially) but strangely enough it worked! all u need is a good concept and composition and a campaign that works for both kids n adults

even adults cried when watching snow white in the 30s. did they have less maturity? no. its the angle the movie was played at towards the audience

I don't love it.
Also, not all the characters are there! What about the doves and the raccoons, the deer and the all important turtle!

Well, actually the poster was done by Gustaf Tengrenn who, like Mary Blair or Eyvind Earle, did styling for the whole film, concepts on how the whole film would look, helping design the characters and the overall feel. And so, the Snow White characters we love are kind of by this guy in large part and it only makes sense for him to do the poster, which was probably done before the character designs were finalized anyway.
Also, posters can have their own style, like how Cinderella's poster looks funky and not really like the characters in the film either.
But for DVD covers...on-model, and not some different style, is best. It kind of would be okay for new animated features, but for someone not commisioned by Walt to do a new style for Walt characters...on these official covers at least...no.

In less than a couple of weeks
Disney's publishing arm is bringing out a book of Gustav Tenggren's
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sketches which I'm really looking forward to buying a copy of !!

I like the new European cover. It's not perfect, but there's plenty of time to change it. Here are the noteworthies
1) That apple is way too CGI
2) the smoke looks nice, but it's not really necessary.
3) It's simple, and classy. You go into a thread for a '90s animated feature on this board, and people are saying how the DVD covers should've been simple like the teaser posters. This is as close as it gets, and it's a '30s movie getting it.
4) I can see them treating all their DEs this way; Apple, Treble Cleft, Rose, Heart, Lamp, Leaf, Slipper, Spaghetti Plate, Seashell, Feathered Cap, (something for jungle book), Spot(or cigarette), something for Sleeping Beauty(maybe staff orb with image inside), Jiminy's top hat.

No , CampbellzSoup I just wish the Snow White website would have been put together by now to promote the Snow White Blu Ray sales!!
With a whole series of clips after all that Blu Ray Trailer , which is all we've had to look at for all these months - is 1 minute 45 seconds long and I'd LOVE to see some longer clips to see what audiovisual wonders the Blu Ray transfer has wrought with a 72 year old movie!!
