Sotiris wrote:I just wish Pixar didn't take their established characters and set them in a different genre than that of the original film. They have done it before with Cars 2 and now with MU. They could have easily created new characters and a new universe instead. I think they're only doing this because it's deemed financially safer this way.
I don't know... I can actually stretch my imagination to a point in time where Mike & Sully were in college together. I think it's a clever way to give us more Monster adventures without having to address Boo. I NEVER want to know what happened with her. That would ruin the original's magical ending. While I agree that it's a specific genre (college comedy), it does explain the history of the characters and actually adds something to the universe these characters live in.

I don't think this is nearly as stupid as Mater as an international super spy. Cars 2 added zero to anything. Completely unnecessary.

I'm much more intrigued by this than I ever was by Cars 2.

I think that MU as a college comedy works better than Cars 2 as a spy flick because, remember, the Monsters universe works as an alternate view of our world. In the first movie, we saw them living in apartments, drive cars and even worry about an energy crisis, things WE as human beings know very well. So, having the movie be about the characters going to college works.

The issue with Cars 2 as a spy movie is that the first movie was NEVER about spies or any other fantastical elements (save for living cars populating a world). It was a small town drama story that had with a character deal with a personal conflict: focus on himself and his own dreams and desires, or open up to other people and gain something more. Cars 2 bothered me because it set around the personal element of the first movie and made it TOO fantastical to the point where it felt like it was a story meant for ANOTHER movie rather than the Cars universe.

I was talking to my best friend, who also loves Monsters Inc. dearly, and we both agreed that we should be cautiously optimistic as it could be really hilarious, but we both agreed that we would have liked a direct continuation of the story. One of the things I mentioned to him was that they could have another crisis, this time being that kids have been so desensitized to the monster's brand of quirky humor that they have to push for ways to make them laugh, realizing that nowadays what gets people to laugh is cruelty and cynicism towards other people, and this creates an issue in that Sulley doesn't want to push his employees, but doesn't want to see the company go under either, and thus finds himself in the exact, same position as Waternoose was in the first movie.

But like I said, I am optimistic for this movie. I doubt it will be THE worst movie ever, and I doubt they will go lower than Cars 2, but I don't want to get myself up for disappointment either.

The animation of Mike as he tripped and rolled off the treadmill was lovely!

Haha that was pretty funny! I really liked how Sully was arrogant at first! But, the movie does look predictable, esepecially who the villain is.

Looks like a lot of fun to me. It's kind of nice seeing Mike & Sully again.

Judging by the little snippets we see of Randall, does anybody else think it will start off with Mike and Randall as friends and then the end will pull a switcheroo by having Randall's more sinister motives revealed as Mike becomes more close with Sully.

I guess that's the tricky part about prequels. When a character is evil in the original movie and they're written as a good guy in the prequel, you know they will eventually "move to the dark side", to quote another film series that eventually got a prequel(s).

Too bad there'a a continuity error. In this trailer they showed that Mike and Sully met for the first time in college.

But Mike said in the first film, "You've been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade, pal."

Also, in the teaser Sully said "Remember the fifth grade, when you spent all your time passing notes to Susie Boyles? The rest of us were studying geography."

Like what Im seeing so far, but if they are indeed meeting for the first time in that clip that would have to mean its a continuity error as we talked about a while back based on the premise.

Edit: I didn't even read the most recent posts, looks like Ive been more than beaten to it. heh

Well why not? Monster's U is coming out in the summer, while we have to wait for Frozen later this year.
