I think that the bonus material...is JUST ok. But for such a huge movie like The Little Mermaid, Disney should put A WHOLE LOT more into this set! I mean come on! we're talking about one of the most popular Disney movies of all time!
Actually, my guess on the musical TLM3 preview, is that it will have a whole animated song (kind of like how previews for TLK had the whole "Circle of Life" song as it's preview...and the preview for BatB in IMAX theaters showed the whole "BatB" song.) But that's just my guess.
What REALLY excites me about this DVD is that there is NO fullscreen; its just showed in 1.78:1!!! I also can't wait to see the "Treasures Untold: Making Of.." thing!
But like you guys, i really hope to see a commentary in the final version! come on Disney!! Oh, and i'm also a sucker for trailers...dont ask why, i just think its neat to have them....so i hope that the PE will have AT LEAST the original theatrical trailer!!

I love the name of the "making of" documentary, and am interested in seeing The Little Match Girl (which I believe was originally intended for the next Fantasia project). What I'm really excited for is the virtual theme park ride which was exactly what I hoped it was: a dvd re-creation of the dark ride intended for Disneyland Paris. Is it possible that they're toying with the idea of going forward with the ride afterall, and the CGI version for DVD is a clever way of planning it all out? I certainly hope so...
For those worried about the lack of commentary, relax. I'm sure we'll have one. Disney seems to only be slacking off with commentaries for older films in which the filmmakers are no longer living. When we get the full press release, I expect we'll see a commentary track, galleries, trailers, and other little featurettes.

I have to agree with you.

god, I really hope there are trailers and footage of the voice actors at work. I want this to be like the Aladdin DVD, that was awesome. I hope they do more on Alan Menken and the music... and promotional posters and stuff like that.

to make up for the sucky bonus feature there's the Little Mtachgirl short on there too. Wich looks awesome. I could be wrong but I haven't read anything about it here on the forum yet.... wich is strange because I thought there were so many traditional animation classic fairy tale supporters on here...

It's great they're keeping the tragic ending... and she looks like a young Mulan

The screenshot of the Little Matchgirl look cute. I like the lighting and dark colors. The shadows are wonderful. Thanks for sharing the link.
It is nice for Disney to include the short animated film on The Little Mermaid DVD.

What a travesty!
No ESPN water-skiing featurette!

Thanks Patrick. That's a really good read.
Somehow the inclusion of a new Disney short is far more exciting than a new DTV or feature film. There is so much history with Disney and short films, and some of their best work was done in short form. I remember when
Lion King 2: Special Edition DVDcame out - I was far more excited by the "One By One" short than I was by the feature film (which was also quite good, I must add).
Look forward to seeing this new short!

I just sent an E-mail to Disney asking if this DVD will include audio commentaries. I will let everyone know if I get a response, and what that response is. It should be noted that several online retailers list a couple of things that the Disney site isn't listing:
Deleted scenes
"The Story Behind the Story" featurette on Hans Christian Andersen
"The Making of The Little Mermaid"
All-new music video
Sneak peek at The Little Mermaid III
Much more!
So, hopefully, in the "Much more!" catagory, we will also be getting commentaries.

ya! no kidding! I still can't believe that they took the trailers off the new edition of Dumbo! and trailers are my favorite bonus features!
So, hopefully, Disney will get a little sense knocked into them, and decide to include a few for a huge film like TLM.

Yay! I was hoping for a "Much More" because that usually means art galleries, my favorite! If there's no art galleries I'll be quite sad.
Also, I'm pretty sure there will be audio commentaries since after all...
On the main page, Luke wrote:Despite its absence from the studio's press release, the feature-length audio commentary by animator/animation historian John Canemaker actually does appear on the upcoming Dumbo: Big Top Edition DVD.
But it doesn't hurt to ask. Thank you MadonnasManOne!

I really hope that in the "much more" section is the video from Peter Andre's version of "Kiss the Girl". It is a classic, I consider it equal to Celin Dion's "Beauty and the Beast", even if most people don't even KNOW that this version of Kiss the Girl exists.

I can't wait for this release! I've only recently seen this movie again for the first time since I was little on a borrowed tape, and I loved it. I do have the movie recorded from The Disney Channel 16 years ago, and the tape still works, but that's nothing compared to a DVD. I just hope that poor tape can hold on until October.
I'm really excited about the bonus features too, after watching all of the ones on the Aladdin DVD. I'm mostly looking forward to a making-of and the song selections with the lyrics on screen. I'm sure they'll come through, though.

Ashley Tisdale recorded a new version of Kis The Girl and I honestly believe it is taking the place if that music video. However you can get that video on the read along DVD in R1
I have it!

Well, I just received an E-mail from Disney. Their response:
Thank you for your question. Currently, The Little Mermaid is scheduled for release on October 3, 2006. Technical details have not yet been determined. Again, thank you for your interest, and keep watching for more details.

Disney Customer Service

Arrrgggghhhh! What do they mean technical details have not yet been determined?! Surely they would know, by now? I sure hope they include audio commentaries. If not, that would really be a let-down.

When they say something like that, it basically translates to:
"Yes, we have all the information about this DVD, but we're supposed to wait until Disney announces the bonus features themselves before we get to tell you."
Don't worry, this DVD will definately have at least one commentary, if not more. I still refuse to believe that John Musker & Ron Clements would put so much effort into
Aladdin's &
Treasure Planet's DVD and then not do a single thing for
Mermaid. At the very least, I'm sure we'll get a commentary from the two of them.
Plus, it's a platinum edition, and we haven't had a PE yet that
didn't have a
commentary.
...
Well, uh, maybe that's not entirely true, but still, this is a more recent film than those two. We'll still get a commentary, don't worry. Personally, I'm hoping for Glen Keane to get some time off from working on
Meet the Robinsons so he can get in on this DVD as well.
