I recall that rapscallian Dick van Dyke (DvD) pattering in Jolly Holiday. I was blissfully scandalized!

Bert and Chorus:

It's true that Mavis and Sybil 'ave ways that are winning

And Prudence and Gwendolyn set your 'eart spinning

Phoebe's delightful, Maude is disarming

Janice, Felicia, Lydia - charming

Cynthia's dashing, Vivian's sweet

Stephanie's smashing, Priscilla a treat

Veronica, Millicent, Agnes, and Jane

Convival company, time and again

Drocas and Phyllis and Glynis are sorts

I'll agree are three jolly good sports

But cream of the crop, tip of the top

It's Mary Poppins, and there we stop!
So *maybe* it's something like this?!

I want to give it the benefit of the doubt. I'm not a Hamilton fan, but I do like some of In the Heights, & I love the Moana soundtrack. I think that LMM is talented, but I agree w/ a poster at that forum that he doesn't have to rap in everything. But maybe it's more rhythmic talking, a la Bert, then anything else...maybe!

Good God. Now I wish he'd never started working at Disney. Even Moana's middling soundtrack isn't worth it.

My anticipation just plummeted to near zero.

Rapping?

Look at it this way; at least now it won't be in the final cut! :P

This is the man who will pen new songs for The Little Mermaid remake. I guess we can expect Sebastian to rap in that now. Thoroughly disgusted with this news and hope Disney cuts or modifies the scene.

I honestly think it's fake. Yes, they tested the film for the first time this week, but everything else, which wasn't much, was probably made up.

We've already heard a bit of the score and it sounded very old fashioned (03:16):

I know Lin-Manuel rapped in 'Hamilton', but do you really expect him to do the same thing here? He didn't even write the songs. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman did! And it seems he thinks their work would make the Sherman brothers proud:

'Mary Poppins' was one of the studio's biggest triumphs and I expect 'Mary Poppins Returns' to mimic it as much as possible. They're going to play it safe. So, no, I'm not expecting to hear someone rap in it.

Oh, and that thread was deleted, by the way.

Plus, I think there's a toy fair in New York next month and I think they're going to reveal the Mattel dolls there like they did with 'Cinderella' three years ago.

Was there really a test screening? The movie isn't coming out until the end of the year- how much is ready, and how much did people see?

That said, no, rapping doesn't belong in Mary Poppins. I'm all for integrating different elements of music into productions, but, like, the original came out during the height of Beatlemania, and there's no rock n roll influence in it at all. And honestly, now that it's not the hottest thing on earth anymore, I want to admit it- I think Hamilton is the cheesiest thing ever, and if it's Lin-Manuel Miranda's attempt to prove that rap and traditional musicals can work together, then I'd say that he failed. I've seen him be talented elsewhere, but I don't think that LMM needs to be that ubiquitous.

The first trailer for Mary Poppins Returns will arrive next week and will be attached to A Wrinkle In Time in theaters. It runs 1:36 minutes.

There'll be a trailer at the Oscars tonight.

Lin-Manuel Miranda was asked about if there would be rapping in the film. He gave a vague answer saying it isn't exactly rapping before explaining that Dick Van Dyke's part in Jolly Holiday is technically rapping.

I like that she's coming in on a kite. I can't remember the second Mary Poppins book, but I think she flew in on a kite in that book or one of them anyway.

The scene at the end with the mirror looked liked Emily Blunt was trying to mimic Julie Andrews which I didn't like.

The trailer didn't do much for me, but Emily looks great as Mary.

I liked the teaser. From the descriptions, I think it's the same shown at D23. The poster is nice too.

That teaser was just lovely, it's gotten me more excited for it more than ever. Rob Marshall does it again for me after Into The Woods and Emily Blunt seems to have the right amount of charm for the role. Definitely seeing this! :D

It left me feeling lukewarm, too. I'm hoping that once we see more of the film in future trailers, I'll feel differently.

I don't think Emily is being too much like the old Mary, but I have seen so little to even judge it.

I think you mean Emily. Sounds like you've been influenced by the live-action BATB with all the talk about Emma Watson lol. Her performance is supposed to be based off the book more, so I think it will differ. We just haven't had the chance to see her in action yet.
