Foreign markets get these 2-3 movie packs all the time. They're nothing new and have never replaced the standalone releases (for both Disney and non-Disney releases). They tend to simply be value-packs. I wouldn't be worried.

It´s not the same thing.

This is a 2 movie pack:

http://www.mubis.es/titulos/pack-blanca ... te-blu-ray

Both individual movies being sold together on a cardboard box.

The Oliver and Company/Fox and the Hound, Fox and the Hound 2 is a single release that has all 3 movies; the same way happened with the Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 Collection, The Rescuers/The Rescuers Down Under Collection

Oliver may have been the highest-earning animated feature to date, but but it doesn’t measure up to the business done by 101 Dalmatians in actual or adjusted dollars, whether comparing Oliver’s debut to 101D’s final release or Oliver’s lifetime (two-engagement) domestic gross to the numbers put up during 101D’s last two trips to the theatre. And that trend carries over into home media sales…
yes...but why do you feel you have to justify films so much with numbers and stats as to wether they have merit or not? It made me smile back in 1988 when I watched it with my mom in that old now defunct Miracle theater. It made many others smile when they saw it back then too. It made back its budget, beat LBT at the box office and Disney was happy with it, until Mermaid came along. And it helped prepare the animators for the greatness that was to come in the 90's. For that alone it deserves a lot more respect than Disney has given it since. All the 80's animated films deserve more than what they have gotten. JMHO. :)

That´s a good point.

Unless it was a complete flop, the tendencies were for the next film to perform better at theaters.

...and even if they were flops. Din´t the same thing happened to some if not most of Walt´s movies that are now considered Classics?

In the end of the day it´s not about popularity or box office. It´s about that each movie is a Classic (Animated Movie) on its own.

I'm against these two-movie collections in all cases and have been pretty consistent on that point. I've only purchased The Fantasia, Rescuers and Hunchback sets. I just find it disrespectful to the films themselves. Disney would NEVER do this sort of thing with Snow White or The Lion King, so why do it to poor Fox and the Hound? (Which was the FIRST initial 2-movie collection, if I remember correctly. Doubly screwed over, that film!)

Are the original releases going to go Out of Print as a result of this? Because I've yet to pick up Oliver & Company and, if that's the case, I need to bite the bullet because I'd HATE to be stuck with this...unfortunate release.

The financials have nothing to do with the merit. Issue was taken with my characterizing Oliver's earning power, so I explained why I did so.

It's a pretty good film. Not great, but pretty good. Definitely signaling new life at the studio.

If it seems Oliver was quickly forgotten it's because Mermaid was a better film. Oliver just isn't as good a film as TLM or TLK or BatB or Aladdin, which is no crime--Atlantis and TFaTH and Sword in the Stone haven't made the impression or lingered in the collective cultural consciousness either, in contrast to the heavy hitters. The studio's feature history is almost 80 years old and comprises more than 50 films: they're not all going to have tremendous impact, they're not all going to be great, they're not all going to be accorded the respect or attention they deserve (whether under- or overrated).

When I was growing up…well. The only way to see older Disney films was to wait for them to come back around to the theaters, and the new films were coming out three and four years apart. (My first VHS purchase was Fantasia, which came out during my last year in college.)

Besides not being as good as the films that immediately followed, Oliver’s memory suffers from the fact that its success led to the studio’s stated aim of realizing features on an annual basis—with a couple exceptions, the public hadn’t seen consecutive yearly releases from the studio in a very long time, and even then not as many as three and four in a row; we’d certainly never seen anything like the quality of the string of late 80s and early 90s annual releases since…well, since the handful that followed Snow White. (And *unlike* Pinocchio through Bambi, the Renaissance films were seen by wide audiences/made fat stacks/had significant cultural impact worldwide *upon initial release*.) And we’ve been comparatively overwhelmed by releases since then: Oliver is #27 of 53 in the canon—half the catalog ago!!— which means the studio has created as many features in the past quarter century as it did in its first 50 years. And for most of that time, *all* the films have been available to the wily, dedicated and wealthy-enough consumer…it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s gotten lost in the publicly conscious shuffle.

I wouldn´t agree on this practice even to the worst ones (Home on the Range, Chicken Little). Individual movies. Individual releases.

What if a person just wants 1 movie? Not only are they forced to have them even if it was free but of course we know they´re not so the customer is forced to pay for something they don´t want.

And let´s, for the sake of argument, agree on this. Well, if we were to agree I think most of us would be ok in the case of Fantasia/200 and Rescuers/Down Under because they´re sequels to each other. But what do Oliver and Fox and the Hound share in common?

No, that is a box set.

In foreign countries they release exactly these items, single releases with two or more movies just as described, in addition to bundled box sets. I own a Tarzan/Hercules/TENG 3 movie pack which I love (one case, 3 discs).

In Australia they are very popular, but they have never replaced standalone releases. Studios arent silly enough to force people to buy a movie they want attached to another unrelated (read sequels) movie they don't want.

Sorry. I didn´t use the proper word then.

What I meant was that in fact what I show are 2 individually movies being sold together in a pack. Precisely, that´s how I got Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Fflewduur,

fair enough, I just bugs me when someone says Oliver was a flop, b/c it wasnt. Yeah its not very impressive when you adjust for inflation and all that, but it wasnt a bomb in its original release the way, say, Home on the Range was a bomb.

Brazil is getting a release of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad this year and it's not a 2-movie collection and I'm jumping up and down of happiness because of that

I translated it as "Book on DVD: The Legend of the Headless Horseman". Based on the title it seems to be another of those Read-Along stories that Disney puts on their DVD releases.

anyone here ever bought from Zavvi.com? Im really confused about how their special offers work. Yesterday I tried to buy Pocahontas & Mulan steelbooks and used the Pocahontas code that gave you 15% off but when I went to checkout it didnt give me the discount. So I cancelled the order b4 I had it go through my PP account. I figured maybe the discount wasnt in effect yet b/c Poca is a preorder & I have to wait until it is no longer on preorder status.

But then today I visited the site again & now I notice the 15% discount offer is gone. Now it just says "offer" but I dont know exactly what the offer is? :?

Heads up- Best Buy should have the single-release for Oliver & Company's Blu for only $15. Try to hit that up while you can if you haven't already!
