^So, that's at least 4 original songs (and a reprise) sung by the characters. How is it not a musical again?

Because PIXAR does not make musicals! Stop questioning what you’re told to think,
Sotiris!

I guess they mean it’s not a traditional musical in the sense that the characters don’t suddenly start singing about their longings, or people in the street don’t sing together improvised songs that everybody seems to know while dancing perfectly choreographed dances (things that I’m not criticising, by the way, I actually love them). The excuse for the songs in this film seems to be more natural or realistic. They are sung at a concert, a talent show, etc. But with so many songs sung by the characters, I think there’s no doubt the film is indeed a musical.

^Exactly what I'm thinking. But this does sound like a out of nowhere song

So, films like Dreamgirls or Rock of Ages aren't musicals anymore? I get what you mean, but that to me is a very narrow definition of what a musical is.

I don't disagree with you. I wasn't defending Pixar on that, I was just saying that maybe that's what they mean when they say
Coco isn't a musical; their excuse for not considering it a film of that genre. It wasn't my personal opinion of what a musical is or should be. I don't know why they are so reluctant to admit it's a musical, especially after the success of films like
Frozen. Maybe because they've always said they don't do musicals, and they don't want to recognise they've broken that rule.

That's so much more than an average movie musical!

Here are more details about the songs and the score:
http://www.ramascreen.com/disney-pixars ... an-sounds/
Of the eight songs, five are original creations. One written by the Lopezes ("Remember Me"), and four by Germaine Franco and co-director Adrian Molina ("Un Poco Loco", "Everyone Knows Juanita", "The World Es Mi Familia" and "Proud Corazón"). The other three ("Much Needed Advice", "Jálale" and "La Llorona") must be traditional or already existing songs.

"Much Needed Advice" doesn't sound like a pre-existing song though. I couldn't find anything on it online.

^ Me neither. It actually sounds more like a score track title than a song title to me.
I guess the other two pre-existing songs are these ones:
La Llorona:

Jálale:

Better put the second singer in #9 as a spoiler, but of course it is super obvious that the Great Grandmother dies
But, who do Antonio Sol, Natalia Lafourcade, Gabriella Flores and Libertad García Fonz play?

I don't know about the others (they're not on the IMDB cast page), but Natalia Lafourcade, I believe, is a pop singer, who is just on the pop duet at the end of the movie.

OK, I've fixed it.
Yeah, I'll be surprised if that doesn't happen.

Yes, that's right. She doesn't play any character, she performs the end credits song along with singer Miguel. Regarding the other voice actors, it hasn't been announced yet what character they play. I'm very curious to know who Antonio Sol voices. He's in three of the songs.
