I think the new logo is rather nice. I like it, and I didn't know it would be placed before POTC 2, so I was in for a huge surprise!

The problem is that Melita Cable had no competition these last 10 years (except for now, since Multiplus showed up), so they could raise their prices while we're treated to mediocre quality.

Apparently, MONO TV sound is unheard of by today's standards, in other countries, but 70 percent of the population here is subscribed with Melita, (including us), so you get just that. 10 percent have digital TV (provided by Melita or Multiplus. Rumour has it that Multiplus has much better quality picture than Melita at lesser prices...). The rest use the old-fashioned antenna. With that you actually get stereo sound, but you can only watch about 12 channels, and the picture can get distorted easily in bad weather, even during Summer.


Currently, on our TV at home, we have the

Local Maltese TV stations: TVM, Net TV, Super One Television, Smash TV, ITV and Education 22

The Italian Channels: Rai Uno, Rai Due, Rai Tre, Italia Uno, Rete Quattro, Canale Cinque, Rai Notizie 24, Sat 2000, La 7 and MTV Italia

The Sicilian Channels: Antenna Sicilia, Rete Sicilia, Italia 7 and Video 3

A French Channel: TV5 Europe

News Channels: Euronews, DW, CNBC, CNN International

British Channels: Zone Reality, Zone Club, Discovery Channel, Jetix

Misc. Channels: MGM Movies


This is one of the cheapest packages Melita offers in analogue. Most of the channels are actually fluff...you will never watch them. The Maltese, Italian and Sicilian Channels are actually all free-to-air. The "novelty" channels (the ones I watch) are Discovery, Reality...and that's about it...

I only watch the Maltese stations maybe for the news report, because the programming is usually very dull.

DVD movie quality is not affected.

BBC World is available from Melita, but at a very high price!

PS: The regular BBC channel is also available... wish I had it...I could watch Eurovision on that instead of TVM (Televison Malta) and finally get to hear the infamous Terry Wogan.

Regarding the digital TV...

Melita Cable PLC and Multiplus Co. LTD use two completely different systems to provide digital TV.

Melita Cable PLC:

When Melita Cable used to operate solely with analogue TV, they'd get you a black, old set-top box at home. They'd plug in it the cables carrying the television signal. The box was used as a tuner, to organize the channels. A cable then went out of the box and into the back of your TV, into the plug meant for aerial TV input (I think in Britain it's called the RFU input of the TV). Of course, through this input, you get the video quality of (more or less) composite video (even though that's something else; I'm just comparing). Since the sorting of channels took place in the set-top box, you didn't use your TV remote to change channels, but the remote Melita provided with the box. The TV's tuner was useless, as you used only one TV "channel" of it for the set-top box. The same "channel" changed whenever you changed channel on the set-top box. I think this explanation is rather confusing, and I hope you know what I mean.

When Melita decided to start offering Digital TV, along with the usual Analogue TV, they system remained based on the company's roots: cable. If you want Melita Digital TV, you get a stylish, silver modern set-top box. A special cable is again plugged in at the back. The set-top box is programmeable and can download software. You can then plug it into your TV through RGB Scart, which has much better picture quality than the RFU input used for analogue. The heightened picture quality, is of course, not just a case of using better connection cables, but the fact that the picture's source is a digital source. Furthermore, you get stereo sound; something that is unavailable for analogue users.

Multiplus Co. LTD:

To combat Melita Cable for the first time; Multiplus showed up. They offer no analogue TV; only digital.

They have a completely different system to Melita Cable. The company is located in the highest building in Malta; Portomaso Tower in St. Julians (a small town). From there, they transmit digital television signals in the air, via an antenna, as opposed to Melita using cable. If you want Multiplus' service, some tehnicians will come to your house and install a special antenna on the top of your house (or some other alternative high place). When ready, they will link it to a special set-top box, similar to Melita's. The aerial can detect the digital TV signals from Portomaso Tower, and send them to the set-top box. The box will then decode the signals into a normal television picture through high quality RGB scart. The set-top box can provide stereo sound, and if available, decode Dolby Digital Prologic II Surround Signals.

Comparison: According to many people I have spoken to or heard, the picture provided by Multiplus, using the antenna system, is superior to Melita's. Moreover, similar channel packages provided by Multiplus are available at a lower price than Melita. Both comapnies further have certain channels which are exclusive to them. This also includes programming. For example, Multiplus, has purchased the rights to air the entire Italian Serie A. Melita now cannot do so. Likewise, Melita purchased the rights to air the Germany World Cup 2006 last June. Multiplus users could only catch the world cup, fragmented on various channels...

In NZ we have BBC World (I'm guessing it's BBC World, because it popups with BBC World) and it's free to watch, providing what you want to watch is on between 12:00 am and 6:00 am. I quite like Talking Movies and the World Debate program is sometimes interesting too.

In NZ our Buena Vista TV logo is the old BV Sleeping Beauty castle, but has been revamped with sort of a water shimmering affect (I think), with (c) Disney.

I haven't seen Dead Man's Chest yet, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it and the new logo soon.

hi people, i just saw brother bear 2.the movie used the old logo with a slight difference.it has birds flying over the castle.

as for the movie, it's not as bad as i thought it would be.ugly songs.pretty consistent character animation.

Thanks, but I haven't really left, just posted less I guess. There's probably posts that you've missed, but I do believe there was a period lately where I was just reading posts and didn't have any input, it was probably longer than I realised.

Anyway, that Avatar probably needs changing, but it'll only be replaced when I find or make another one or get sick of it. It's a Weta in case you're curious, Weta Workshop/Weta Digital have one of these (model) outside their enterance.

He is probably talking about BBC Prime, the entertainment channel for Europe/Africa/Asia, rather than World or One/Two/Three/Four/etc..

Actually, if you're willing to pay, in Malta you can get both BBC Prime and BBC World.

That's even more expensive. Because you have to pay a humongous amount of money every year with some sort of card. (I have no idea how it works). About ten years ago, a lot of people in Malta were getting Satellite, but now there aren't much left as the costs are high.

By the way, did I mention ITV? Because the ITV that I have at home is a Maltese Tele-Shopping Channel. I suppose there happens to be another channel called ITV?

Now, to get back on the new logo treatment, there was a movie just came out this week called "Invincible", does this movie has the same new logo used in POTC: DMC? But the one in the trailer had the orange logo.

Invincible has the new Disney logo as well as trailers for the new Touchstone movie "The Guardian" with Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner.

"Invincible" is a wonderful movie, the story of an out-of-work part-time bartender (Mark Wahlberg) who goes to an 'open tryout' for the Philadelphia Eagles football team. This is the 'true' story of Vincent Papale who was 30 years old and had no college football experience, who took the NFL Eagles by storm. Really good football movie. Not like the others. This tells the human side of a player, who learns that he is good enough to play in the pros. I like the way they show the real Vincent Papale and Dick Vermiel at the end of the movie while the credits are running. Very good movie, highly recommended.
