New Trailer

Looks Awesome, though Having Dwayne the Rock Johnson voice him and watching WWE through the years, kinda hard to focus on the character, but it's not a bad thing. I laughed at the last part. This movie looks awesome.

Love it! Also laughed at the last part. Weird that the Jeromine Clements crab has disappeared. The music is nice, but I can't tell if it's from the movie or not (I swore I heard Auli'l at one part.)

OK, the first 30 seconds were awesome and epic, the way a trailer should be, but after that it reverted to the typical animated trailer where jokes and gags are highlighted (which usually aren't even funny) to make sure the audience knows it's a comedy.

I still find Maui and Heihei annoying and the episodic nature of the narrative puts me off. It seems the movie is going to start off strong but when Moana meets Maui it'll go into the same tired, conventional buddy/road trip formula that's been done to death.

Also, I much preferred the original design of the lava creature. It was much more interesting and it looked more of a character instead of just a monster.

I generally agree with this. I thought it started off really strong, but was subsequently disappointed that they went with the comedy for the most of the rest of the trailer. Though it did pick up slightly near the end before the title card, where they briefly highlighted some of the dramatic and action-oriented scenes. (And then some more comedy, of course. :lol: ) I wouldn't be surprised to see one final trailer that pushes the more dramatic elements though. As I recall, the drama-oriented Frozen trailer was saved for last and came out only a month or so before the movie release.

I won't say anything as to the narrative itself, since I haven't seen it yet, and I'm not really against episodic films. But it does undoubtedly seem like it will have that road trip element that many of the posters here oh-so-love. :lol:

While I don't mind the design of the lava monster in the trailer (I think it looks pretty cool in action), I do agree that the design in that concept piece is better. But maybe it will have some shape-shifting element to it and there will be more to it than what we see in the trailer. Here's hoping, anyway.

And last, I'm still not sure about the way the water is interacting with Moana though... I just looks.... weird? (And not in a good way.) And so Moana actually does high-five the water, huh? I wish that was exclusive to the poster.

I don't like that element either. It's silly, needless, and awkward. It makes the film's universe less believable.

yeah, if the water is her friend why would a journey on the ocean be so daunting for her? it removes much of the danger from the situation.

I liked the trailer... except for all the times it tried to be funny...which was way too often. Sigh.

The first part of the trailer looked nice and interesting. As soon as we got to the “I hate you, I’m not riding with a little girl” dialogue, I lost interest. How many times are they going to make the same movie over and over and over again (not referring to M&C here, but Disney in general since we know Lasseter inserts himself to make sure every movie is the same). And how many times are the critics going to lap the **** up like it's original and unique and profound?

There are a couple moments Maui looks okay, but overall the animation here only accentuated how bad his design is.

It looks more and more likely that the villainess—if this lava blob even has a character or gender anymore—will be disappointing just like Gothel. And after starting with so much potential, too, just like Gothel. Even as a blob or some natural force, I doubt it’ll be as good as, say, characters like Monstro and the Firebird. You're right, Sotiris, the design looks awful. It almost looks like the glitchy "witch" at the end of ParaNorman, only worse.

I think it's going to be a common response for people to roll their eyes at Moana's powers. None of the princesses before Elsa had any special powers, and the first princess to come after Elsa controls the ocean. Thank God Lasseter had no power at Disney in the '90s. Could you imagine how he'd have trashed up TLM, Aladdin, and B&tB?

OH MY GOD! SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT! I recognized this a while ago. It makes me so mad to be honest. The pitch seems to be: A cute, too precious, "badass" princess (minus Judy) urges a mean, sarcastic jerky guy on an adventure. Like:

Rapunzel->Flynn
Vanellope->Ralph (I'm now convinced they made a secret Disney Princess movie and got away with it)
Anna->Kristoff
Luckily had a break in Big Hero 6, but the side characters were so one-dimensional and dull.
Judy-> Nick
Moana->Maui
Vanellope->Ralph (again)

And of course and maybe the worst cause of it:
Inma->Jack (It sounded like Gigantic was going to have an original plot line until the pushback to 2018)

They're also making the same kinds of the main characters over and over again and as excellent as these movies are, the characters and the plot lines are now getting boring and tiresome.

I actually enjoy these movies encourage platonic female and male friendships. Of course Tangled had romance since it was basing itself on earlier Disney movies, but over the years there has been more emphasis on the importance of non-romantic love and friendship.

And of course, this thread has turned into another Lasseter bashing fest, because people seem to forget that the criticisms they have for this decade were similar to the 90's movies. The only difference is what tropes each decade was using. If it was the other way around, then people would be bashing on Disney for focusing too much on romance, songs, card carrying villains with no depth, etc.Also the story wasn't on Anna and Kristoff, but her relationship with her sister. Kristoff wasn't the main focus of the story, but a crucial character who helps her on her journey but also becomes her love interest in the end.

And from the plotline from the original version of Gigantic, the reason why they changed was due to the fact from the sound of things it had so many jumbled plotlines that a lot of it needed to get simplified down. Also the romantic angle of the story would have probably take away from the giant focus.

The Revival Era CGI duos. Soon Gigantic, Soon.

If romance was the bread and butter of the Disney Renaissance period, then friendship and familiar love is the same with the Revival period. I know the Kakamora might seem like a cheap Minions cash grab, but since they are promoted as antagonists I don't think that will be the case.

Romance wasn't a new thing with the Renaissance though.... '50s Disney was just as romance-heavy.

And you're forgetting Tiana/Naveen, Rapunzel/Flynn, and Anna/Kristoff. The only reason they weren't just friends like the others was they were Princess films. Moana's the only one that's deviated from that formula so far with Maui.... It's still not original when they've had 6 other films in a row before it with the arguing, buddy roadtrip thing (and the 10+ PIXAR films before that).

In the beginning of the revival, there was more emphasis on romance but it's kind of waned as the decade has gone on. And another reason why it's good that Moana doesn't get a love interest, is because in Polynesian cultures it's strictly forbidden to teenage girls of Moana's age to be romantically connected with boys of the same age. In other words, they actually did as much research for this movies' culture as they possible could.

It still disproves the point. They're just following a formula, not because they are trying to make a statement about platonic love. I'm sure there will another romance-based buddy roadtrip in our future. I'm not sure what's coming after Gigantic though.

That actually blew my mind to read, but you're right.... She can "speak" with the ocean but still has to deal with it's dangerous aspects?

Why can't Moana just say, "Hey, ocean, be nice and let me cross"? At least Elsa had the reason that her emotions made her magic berserk. :P

I just had a thought- and I'm not complaining- but it's weird, isn't it, that Tangled, for example, wasn't called Rapunzel, because OMG, boys won't see a movie named after a girl, but Moana heavily features Maui (or at least it's being marketed that way), and it's called Moana...?

Maybe just because it's not an immediate recognizable as a girl/princess name like Rapunzel is? Or because it also means "ocean" (though probably not, since the average person wouldn't know that)?

I'm glad that they went with Moana as the title, though. Fortunately, it wasn't Splashed or something like that.

I noticed a lot of the complaints here on the thread are not shared by many who have reacted to the trailer.

If you're referring to the red fluff ball, it is another shot in the same scene. May be deliberate.
