The best news of the weekend is the continued strength of Disney’s Frozen. The film earned another $10.2 million, thanks to word-of-mouth, the utter disinterest in Walking With Dinosaurs (it’ll finish its frame with $20m total), and the fact that Saving Mr. Banks and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty aren’t as kid-friendly as their trailers imply. If it’s Fri-Sun total tops the $30m fifth weekend of Titanic (possibly), it will be the second-biggest fifth weekend in history behind Avatar‘s $42m frame (third-biggest is the $22m of The Sixth Sense, which it will easily surpass).
The Disney animated feature now has $229.79m domestic, making it officially Disney’s biggest-grossing non-Pixar animated feature outside of The Lion King. Even adjusted for inflation, it will trail only The Lion King and Aladdin for films over the last 45 years, with Beauty & The Beast‘s $281m adjusted total and Tarzan‘s $271m adjusted cume both well-within reach. Long-story short, this one will be over/under $245m by the end of the weekend, with the once-unthinkable $300m domestic milestone genuinely plausible at this point.

Yeah, I'm very impressed by Frozen's box-office performance. I had a feeling it would, at least, make $200 million like Tangled did. But this is far and above what I expected.
Frozen will actually hold the distinction of being the first Disney Animation to gross more than the Pixar movie of its year. Domestically, anyway. It would have to pull equally amazing numbers overseas to overtake Monsters University worldwide.

Box Office Mojo currently lists it as having earned $150 million outside the US, but this hasn't been updated since 22nd December, and I could imagine it will get higher.

So I FINALLY got to see it (6 days before the official release in Brazil) since they started to show the movie in some cinemas.
I don't saw any huge problems with it at all.
BTW, I LOVED the way Anna was saved and how Elsa got to understand and control her power

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. But the only danger there though is that LIG is being promoted / used so much that it has a danger of overshadowing any other 'signature' song don't you think?

It's outgrossing Monsters University in Europe quite easily. Worldwide is happening.

I think the real feat is if Frozen beats Despicable Me 2's worldwide sum, about $550,000,000. Which could happen if the domestic numbers are any indication. Disney's first billion dollar movie?

There is no way Frozen is going to beat DM2 in the international box office...
The minions have a huge fanbase, that frozen unfortunately doesn't have. Which is a shame cause DM2 is one of the worst
animated, movies I've seen this year.

Well Rio is another popular franchise (mainly because of the oversee territories), so that is not the only franchise Blue Sky is expanding on.
As far as Ice Age 5 goes, the last two movies made nearly a billion dollars so this really shouldn't be a surprised.

Ice Age- Oh wow ! What a nice movie and completely unique in a way
Ice Age 2- Terrible compared to the original, but it was alright, but since this is the last one....
Ice Age 3- nO stop just stop.... now, please....
Ice Age 4- This is getting beyond dumb, are kids and parents STILL enjoying these movies ???

I so agree with this. Except for me DM2 was one of the worst movies I've seen in a movie theater ever.

I have no interest in DM2 despite sort of liking the original. But yeah, Frozen's not getting that high.
If not for Frozen, this would be one of the worst years for animation in recent memory to me. Pixar put forth one of its weaker efforts, Epic and The Croods were just plain dull to me even though a lot of people seemed to like them, Turbo was pretty bad, and I don't know if I could stomach Free Birds, Walking with Dinosaurs, etc. I do still want to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 though.
Next year doesn't seem much more promising sadly, so hopefully Big Hero 6 keeps Disney's streak going. I'm really looking forward to more news about it.

The problem is studios are relying to much on sequeals! Blue Sky got lucky with Rio, other than that, all they rely on is sequeals to Ice Age. Dreamworks, The Croods is their only successful original film since How to train your Dragon. Megamind, Guardians & Turbo were flops, they have upcoming sequeals to Dragon, Kung Fu Panda & a Madagascar Penguins spin-off. Even Pixar, Brave is their only original film since Toy Story 3. They finally got the message as they will take 2014 off & plot their comback with 2 original films in 2015. WDAS has had 3 original CGI hits starting with Tangled in 2010. With BH6 & Zootopia due out over the next 3 years, they clearly look like the best animation studio right now. They are creating a whole new generation of modern characters like Pixar did in the 2000s.
