Interesting song clips. A couple of things came to mind:

1) No background music? I hope this is just for the merchandise. I can't imagine a song like this actually playing in the film without serious instrumentals to get the feeling going.

2) The feel of the song is much more like an introductory song to Rapunzel's character a la "Belle" and "One Jump Ahead" as opposed to the "I want songs" from past Disney films like "Part of Your World" or "Our There". This is also exemplified by it being the first track on the Soundtrack (see amazon's listinghttp://www.amazon.com/Tangled-Soundtrac ... 551&sr=8-1). I doubt there would ever be a Disney-esque soundtrack start off with a somber, quiet, powerful ballad instead of a fun, upbeat draw-the-crowd in song.

3) I'm conjecturing here, but I assume the two reprises of "When Will My Life Begin?" will be more "I want" in feeling, similar to the "One Jump Ahead" reprise and "Belle" reprise.

4) I think it's a pity that Disney didn't have the sense to give this film a classic Prologue to fit on the soundtrack before "When Will My Life Begin?".

Yes, I know but the emphasis could still be retained with less repetition

And I'll re-read the books,
If I have time to spare,
I'll paint the walls some more,
I'm sure there's room somewhere,
And then I'll wash, and dry,
And brush, and braid my hair...

Not that I don't agree that different lyrics might have been more interesting or imaginative, but...*shrug*
Also, now that you mention it, I actually don't think Rapunzel even knew how, or was physically able, to braid her hair--no, no, hear me out, haha!

Why would Gothel have ever taught her how to pull her hair up? She's only interested in running her hands through it to absorb its magic. And as useful as her hair is within the tower, Rapunzel is also hindered by its sheer length later--she has to gather it up and carry it in her arms, and several times Flynn has to help her. If she knew how/was able to tie all that hair up, I think she would have. It isn't until they reach the kingdom and all the passers-by start stepping on her hair that Flynn spots 4 little red-headed girls braiding each other's hair by a fountain and signals them to come over, which they happily do--all that gorgeous hair to braid! It literally took all 4 of them, holding different sections, to get the job done.
(This is where that scene of Flynn smiling & Max waggling his eyebrows at him comes from--he's watching the girls skip around Rapunzel, braiding her hair, with such a contented look....my heart melted XD )

Awwwww! I'm seriously saying that out loud right now. i already thought that part was cute, but i thought it was the dancing part, and that Flynn's looking at Rapunzel dancing :)

Btw, what does Flynn say in the narration?( not in the scene above but in the other spoilered scene i asked you about a few minutes ago ;)) Sorry for another question

I'm really disappointed in the lyrics, this was why I don't care for Glenn Slater as a lyricist. :(

If you compare them with the Lion King or Beauty and the Beast, they seem very common. Also a lot of the words don't rhyme.

Just my personal rant here. 8)

Yeah, in that one Rapunzel's dancing and waves for Flynn to come dance too, but he demures--until Max gives him a 'friendly' shove XD

Um, I hope I'm doing this right: He says "And I know the big question remaining: did we get married? Well, after YEARS and YEARS of asking.....I finally said 'Yes.'" It was so great!

Thanks for posting all of those videos, everyone! I'm still not caught up yet...that's definitely Mandy's voice for the doll, though!!! I was also puzzled by the lack of music, but surely there's music in the real song...?!

Thank you for sharing! :)

According to this http://xdreaminghumble.livejournal.com/13278.html the specific doll sings another part of the song:
"And so I'll read a book, or maybe two or three. I'll add a few new paintings to my gallery. I'll play guitar and dance(?) and cook and basically, just wonder when will my life begin."
Could you please, record and upload that part too? It would mean a lot to us.

The Italian version of the video is now available on YouTube if you're interested. The official WDAS YouTube channel will eventually upload the original version too. We just have to be patient.

No background music? I hope this is just for the merchandise.
I think it is just for the merchandise. The other 17 inch dolls were there and they all sang a song clip from their respective movies, all without background music and seemingly with their original voices. I think I read somewhere that Paige O'Hara, Lea Salonga, Jodi Benson sang the song clips for these dolls. I don't know about Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty though. So I'm guessing it really is Mandy Moore's voice singing the Rapunzel doll clip. I really hope the song sounds better in the move because from this clip, it sounds like a banal teenybopper song. As for the lyrics, I don't think there has been really great lyrics since Beauty and the Beast so they don't bother me as much as the tune itself.

Yeah, luckily, I am going in with low expectations as far as clever lyricism goes, so I won't be too disappointed in Glen Slater's sloppy work this time.

I almost vomited out of my ears when listening to the wretched "Love Never Dies: Phantom 2; Electric Boogaloo" cast album. His contributions to the Broadway Little Mermaid were no help in keeping that from becoming a huge flop.

I really wish Menken would find another partner. le sigh.

The melody is catchy but the lyrics are dull, unimaginative, and repetitive. Especially the repetition of the "I'll brush" part could have been easily substituted with new lyrics.

Btw, the voice in the videos doesn't sound like Mandy's. Why would they use someone else to sing the same song for the merchandise?
Where did you get the lyrics?

I am not totally un-impressed by Slater like some other members here.

I for one don't totally care about lyrics, as long as the melody and the emotion are there I can find a song enjoyable.

And I do think that Slater has done some decent work.

"If Only" from the little mermaid is wonderful! I also enjoyed "Beyond my Wildest Dreams".

So we shouldn't be writing the songs off this early!

Oh gosh, thank you! I don't get everything right but I try to get as close as I can, at least! I'm a little busy with several different things right now but I'm hoping to get it done as a Halloween gift for all the spoiler fans!

I'm sure the songs will be serviceable, but in a musical I do hope for some thought having gone into the lyrics as well as the music. If Only in TLM musical starts off so pretty, and then we get to Triton singing how "she disappeared into thin water" and I'm like WTF??? I'm not asking for Sondheim clever, but come on...his lazy work makes Howard Ashman and Stephen Schwartz sound like Shakespeare.
