So, I was just reading through the press release and this bluray release is apparently going to be a 1 blu disc and 1 dvd combo, then it'll get a 2-disc DVD release.

From how it sounds, that single blu disc will be completely loaded, but I don't understand how we're going to get all of these bonus features on one disc and actually have them be good. Has Disney utilized the blu's disc space this thoroughly before?

Most of the Classic DVD Features will likely be in SD (I assume "The Old Mill" will be HD), so they won't take up as much space. Plus, there's no mention of the film having the DisneyView option, so there's 70 minutes of HD content freed up right there. Of course, those 70 minutes could go to the HD "Enhanced Edition" of Inside Walt's Story Meetings. Since it's now "A fascinating, multi-tiered, interactive story-telling experience", I have a feeling they re-built the entire feature from the ground up in HD rather than port over the SD version that's on the Platinum, where it was its own encode on the disc rather than an alternate angle of the main feature.

Like the Platinum Editions before it, the Diamond ones are rapidly
changing for the worst. These were supposed to have extensive bonus features (2 disc platters) and now this Bambi 1-disc bluray....

The number of discs is irrelevant IMO. I remember when Bambi Platinum Edition was press released and people complained about how light that release seemed to be, but when it came out, we ended up with one of the most informative released for many a year - thanks to the "Inside Walt's Story Meetings". A special feature which actually assumed the audience had some intelligence and a desire to learn. Even the time capsule was interesting in a trivia type way. Yes, looking at the bullet points Bambi Platinum Edition looked light, but when you actually dug into the release, it was more weighty than most.

However, I do agree that it appears that the "Diamond" releases are starting to slack. But if I was in charge of Disney, I'd do away with these stupid collection titles, the regular release schedule and everything else which commodecises these releases and just spend my time making good discs, which I would release when they were ready. As soon as you have anything done to a schedule, creativity suffers.

I fear Disney's instance to sticking to its "Diamond" schedule is also affecting their product. Surely Disney should be releasing more CAPS era films in HD - I would assume the work to get these to a satisfactory HD viewing standard is slight... perhaps almost non-existent. I'd be perfectly happy for the older films to be released a slower pace if we got more modern films released. Is still see no reason for the HD release of Dumbo (especially as new content is scarce) or Alice (how many times has this been released on DVD?) while films like Hercules and Hunchback or even Treasure Planet (which was quickly knocked down from a 2 disc DVD set to single disc) are constantly ignored.

it's business. all studios slack on catalog releases. i have yet to see if any Shrek blus retained the old bonuses.

As far as I saw, they did, or they had the old interviews edited well with newer ones etc

I see some complaining that its only 1 Blu-ray disc but no suggestions on what else could have been included. Bambi was one of the more recent Platinum Edition releases and does not call out for new interviews/making-ofs the way Snow White and Beauty and the Beast did. When modern Disney artists and available footage of the cast/crew members were already gathered just 5 years ago, there is not signifcant additional perspective gained and its not necessary to construct entirely new documentaries. The only things I could think of including that were left out would not be directly related to the film and have been or likely will be found on other hi-def releases.

Got it for 14.99 pre-ordered on amazon you should have jumped on that while you could.

I agree that the number of discs is irrelevant but keep in mind that, apart from what is apparently a new documentary, what we get is basically a rehash of the Platinum DVD Story meeting (albeit "enhanced" as Disney says)...

Exactly, lest we forget the countless amount of fluff features that packed the second disc on the Platinum DVD of The Lion King (or the fact that The Lion King II got spread out into a "2 Disc Special Edition", of all things). Clichéd as it may sound, quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality.

To be fair, I think Disney simply feels safe with releasing the likes of Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo on Blu as they know that they'll sell well. That said, I agree that Disney needs to get out of its safety zone and start putting out a few more films and not stick just to a concrete release schedule. It makes no sense for Disney to not re-release Hercules, The Rescuers Down Under or The Hunchback of Notre Dame even if just on DVD, as they both haven't been sourced from CAPS files, and Hercules isn't even anamorphic (and though no Lion King or Aladdin in terms of Aladdin, it's quite a popular film). The Hunchback of Notre Dame equally had a wealth of laserdisc-era bonus features, so a bumper release on either Blu or DVD for that film in particular would be relatively easy to prepare and sell.

Just saw this over at amazon uk....

Wow, that's an interesting concept; to pair the movie with its sequel. Not sure how everyone will feel about this, though, as I'm sure the traditionalists won't be too keen on the original classic paired with a DTV sequel.

Still no word on the sequel in the US. We haven't had much luck in that area, being passed over for the BATB sequels, but I'm not sure if that's a bad thing. I am not really a fan of the sequels, although Bambi 2, The Lion King II, and BATB: The Enchanted Christmas were pretty good.

admittedly, I'm now curious enough that I'm probably gonna rent the sequel when the BD comes out.
