Star Trek I actually only went to see it because it stars Simon Pegg, but I was really surprised how good it was! It had great action, the script wasn't bad, the cast is amazing and all in all it's a pretty damn good summer movie.

I saw the new Space Trek (2009) movie today. Loved the part where Luke Astrowalker met with the Master Computer Program who told him to destroy the Replicants before they reach the age of 30 and take over the world with their giant mutant ants from Mars. So glad V.I.N.CENT saved the day with his micro submarine but hated the surprise ending where it was really Earth all the time and the Morlocks were in control.

No I actually saw the new Star Trek movie and it was good even though I'm not a fan of any of the series

Glad to see so much love (or like) for the new Star Trek!

Anyway, over the weekend I watched the following...

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - part one of a marathon viewing, and there's several parallels between this film and the new Star Trek. Both feature the Enterprise manned by cadets, both include the Kobayashi Maru, and both feature a villain who hasn't been seen/heard of for years. I'm sure there's more, but I don't want to list all of them.
Movie Grade: A+

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - part two of a marathon viewing, and in retrospect seems like a necessity to bridge II and IV and doesn't work as well as a standalone film. Still, I have fond memories of the film as it was the very first Star Trek movie I owned on VHS.
Movie Grade: B-

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - part three of a marathon viewing, it's always been my favourite. The last time I watched it was in the hospital (so it made a not-so-pleasant evening a bit more tolerable), so watching it again was a joy. It seems quite dated now, but is still timeless with such things as nuclear wessels.
Movie Grade: A-

Kate and Leopold - I forget how I ended up watching this, I think it was because I picked the wrong DVD case on the shelf (it's next to Serendipity, one of my favourite John Cusack films). But it's still a good movie, and the parents had never seen it so they enjoyed it too.
Movie Grade: B

Blind Dating - I'd been trying to get Jane to watch this but she never felt like it, so I finally decided to watch it myself, as it's been a year or so since I first saw it. It's quite stupid, really, and the script is weak, but Chris Pine and Anjali Jay are so cute together in the film.
Movie Grade: C

Mr. Bean's Holiday - it was more background noise than anything as I was typing stuff on my computer, but I realised that the film really isn't as enjoyable as it was for me the first time around. I was more impatient for weaker scenes to finish in order to get to the good ones.
Movie Grade: A-

A Room With A View - I finally own this! Yay!
Movie Grade: A+

The Count of Monte Cristo - a good-enough adaptation, even if several liberties were taken with the characters and certain plot points. But it's always been a favourite of mine.
Movie Grade: B

Enchanted was on this morning - love all the little hidden references to earlier Disney films!

Re-watched:





It's much smarter than a typical Disney film. For example, the father has speeches like you wouldn't believe. But they're incredibly detailed yet concise. The next thing is that this film actually sets up a stern, hard man... then has a firm woman step in and cut him to ribbons every time he thinks he's going to put her in her place. The interplay between Mr. Banks and Mary Poppins is amazing. She's domineering, yet he doesn't let her take him over either. But it's important that she be strong, since the wife who runs around constantly on some patrol for womens' rights is the most "yes, dear!" or "I'd just muddle the whole thing up," self-defeating person I've seen on film in a long time.

The children aren't stupid or annoying either. Neither is Dick Van Dyke, as the American pretending to be British. Also, there's a sequence where an animatronic bird sings on Mary Poppins finger... After all these years, that technology still stuns me! There are no wires. She's moving that robot all around... Could it possibly be remote controlled? And the animated sequence really is great. I especially loved the backgrounds during the "Jolly Holiday" scene. Not a perfect film, though. Some of the musical numbers get embarrassingly stupid. Especially the big Chimpney Sweep thing on the roof that takes 7 minutes and... God... they dance so much, the music runs out and they start playing Irish jig and fiddling type stuff. It's insane... The penguin dance sequence is also incredibly...not good.

There were wires indeed but they rand behind the back of her hand and up her arm. Crazy stuff in those days.

Terminator Salvation

This movie is really cool guys, it's a 2 hour movie, but It commanded all my attention from start to end to the extent that I thought it only took about half an hour, which pissed me off until my friend told me what the time was.
Forget Star Trek, this is the movie that you have GOT to see this summer.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian A good movie. Not quite as good as the first, but has many of the first one's best qualities. Cast is terrific, especially Amy Adams as Amelia Aerheart(if that's how it's spelled). The film treats itself, first and foremost, as a comedy, which is a good thing and the comic timing is very good.

Anyway, the NJ Trilogy traveled deep into Pennsylvania today (well, just a couple hours in) for a wedding rehearsal dinner and watched WALL-E and Enchanted. Both were excellent, as expected.

A couple days earlier, I watched Pufnstuf, the movie based on the Krofft tv series. Was definitely a trip without a suitcase.

Statement/question: I haven't seen the first one, and I have no interest in these films, BUT there is a YouTube video of Jonas Brothers and the director of this film, and they play cherubs. At first I thought it was a joke (I mean, the video was a funny video), but my friend said that they actually play the cherubs. (Sorry if I ruined the movie for you, if you didn't know that they play the cherubs...maybe they really don't, but my friend says it's really them...have to run, so no time to check IMDB!). Were the cherubs only on screen for a minute or 2? They're not big characters, are they? I told my friend that I'll just watch her copy of the DVD when it comes out, because I still have no interest in seeing the film except for their small part.

House of Wax - I had a party and my friends and I felt like scaring ourselves. Too bad it didn't scare us. It was an okay movie, but I didn't think it was that scary, but it was definitely gross.

Angels and Demons - By far the biggest surprise of the year so far. After receiving so much s*^t from critics I was certain I was headed for certain disappointment. I was glued to the silver screen from the moment the movie began all the way up to the finish. Despite some minor flaws I found this movie highly entertaining, and am baffled by the poor reception. 8/10

Should have watched the 1953 original. At least that one has a sense of humor your friends could have enjoyed.

Sunshine Cleaning
One of those little indie movies that you go see not knowing what to expect and they blow you away.
Emily Blunt and Amy Adams give great peformances (Where is Adams' Oscar?) and although the movies does feel a bit depressing at times it is very optimistic and also funny.

Madagascar 2: Escape To Africa

I was rather disappointed. Though I'm not a fan of DreamWorks in general, one of my favorites is Madagascar, and the sequel wasn't all that fantastic. There were some spots here and there that were funny, but overall, I think they could have done better with it. 2.5/5
