I've read plenty of books on Mulan as a kid (gotta love Chinese bookstores), and nowhere does it ever say that Mulan had nothing going for her and therefore went into battle for that reason. I got it from absolutely nowhere, as I am merely speculating and making assumptions that are not needed to be made. To explain my point further, I never actually said that she went to battle looking to die. But at the same time, it would have far more honorable, as she may have seen it, to die in battle than to live with the shame of not being able to be wed and produce offspring, which really was supposed to be her goal in life.

I don't remember Mulan being sterile. She didn't succeed with the matchmaker, but that gave no indication that she wouldn't find a suitable husband later on. Even her father said so with the whole "blossom" monologue. Mulan had everything to live for, which I think makes her sacrifice all the more organic. She'd give it all up just to save her father, even though he expressed slight anger with her.

Precisely. However, I am looking at the situation from a slightly less Westernized view. Did you notice how important the Matchmaker scene was in the beginning? Her whole life was basically building up to that point, and she completely ruined it. In a society where such a great importance is placed on honor, what man in his right mind would even consider marrying her? And, no, she probably wasn't sterile, but without a husband, she may just as well have been. And not being able to produce, there wasn't much meaning to her life (remember this was back in the day when women were nothing more than vessels to carry offspring).

And now I have analyzed to the extreme something that didn't need any analysis in the first place. Thanks, Siren!

I've finally seen Mulan. I have to say that I wish I hadn't waited so long to see it. It was a lot better than I thought it would be when it first came out.

i was the same, my friend kept telling me to watch it, she kept insisting that i'd love it, but i kept ignoring her. Then about a year later it was on the BBC at Christmas, and i loved it!!

Mulan is really a great movie!

One of the lasts disney's good movies!

Great characteres, good story, beautiful sets, amazing songs, and very funny and dramatic! All good ingridients for a great Disney movie!

I love MULAN!!! Now it might not be such a "classic" as some others, but I think it's probably one of my favorite Disney movies of all time.

I love the songs... they're just as good as songs from any other Disney movie, in my opinion.

I saw Mulan when it came out in VHS (No I didn't get the DVD) but I did like it. On of the last best Disney animated films of the 1990's era.

I have to say I liked Mulan loads better than Pocahontas. I tried watching it (Pocahontas) after I bought it when the 2 Disc edition came out but I couldn't really get into it. May try again though.

I have to say that my favorite character in Mulan is the little dragon guardian...I can't speel the name :lol.

That's exactly how I felt. After Pocahontas came out, I was disappointed in Disney and didn't watch a single Disney animated feature in theaters after it. I was told on this forum that I was missing out on a lot of great movies, so I bought Mulan and Brother Bear and was REALLY impressed with both of them!

I agree with *Pocahontas*, i think Pocahontas is ace, its in my top 5! i prefer it to mulan, i just love the feel of the movie. Try it again Tabbi

Same here! But I saw it on the Disney Channel a few years later or something. It was way better than I had expected.

Some how I was thinking I was posting a reply to the Halloweentown trilogy release and ended up here. Not sure how that happened :lol

The first Mulan movie was very well-done. The songs were good (Reflection was moving, to me) and the animation excellent.
It's in my top 10 as far as animated movies go.

Pocahontas vs. Mulan

This dichotmey (?) is quite a quandary. Both feature exotic princesses, strong heroines, and are excluded from the golden cannon of 90's features. Honestly, I hold them both in high esteem, higher than The Lion King. ( ) I think Pocahontas will one day be appreciated for the glorious piece of art it is. Every frame looks like it could be hung in a museum. People often criticize it as being too serious, but when did animated features become exclusive to kid-friendly slapstick humor? Mulan is the opposite. Story seems to be the focus, rather than artistic design, and that's just fine with me. The creators of both knew that a story has to be told through its strengths and they both acknowledged what they were and followed through on them. If I had to choose, my vote, and heart, would have to go to the lovely Pocahontas.

Mulan wasn't a bad film. It isn't one I've seen recently but I think Eddie Murphy was funny as Mushu. Mushu was my favorite hands down simply because he kept the pace moving.
