I recall reading somewhere that A Bug's Life was originally gonna be done by Walt Disney Feature Animation back in the early nineties. It was later moved to Pixar. These are however rumours and we'll probaply never know if this is true.

I found both to be good but A Bug's Life edges out Antz by a bit. I would give A Bug's Life maybe 4/5 stars and Antz 2.5/5.
A Bug's Life -vs.- ANTZ

I thought General Discussion would work, since A Bug's Life is part of the topic, but if this needs moved to off-topic, feel free... I
I remember seeing part of ANTZ on display at various home theater stores, but I never had a chance to see the full movie. I picked up a copy today (the Signature edition, w/ the WTC on the cover) and I was wondering what people's impressions were of this movie.
I know that at the time, the general public may have erroneously thought it was trying to copy A Bug's Life, or they expected a family film like A Bug's Life instead of the 'PG' ANTZ (ooo, it had war scenes...

)
What are your impressions of this film by itself, compared to A Bug's Life, compared to Pixar films in general, and/or compared to CG animation in general?
Do you think Pixar's release of A Bug's Life hurt this at the box office?

Bugs life was a much better story, The Animation was better in Bugs Life. Antz was ok, but nowhere as good as Bug Life. They also came out around the same time

You have to remember that even though <i>Antz</i> was said to have entered production after <i>A Bug's Life</i>, it opened in theaters almost two whole months earlier. As such, it is more likely to have hurt <i>A Bug's Life</i> than the other way around. Nonetheless, when everything else is equal (and while that's not true, it's close), Disney benefitted from having stronger brand recognition than Dreamworks (especially true in 1998), wider marketing possibilities (tie-ins, venues, etc.), and the ability to tout that their film was from the makers of <i>Toy Story</i>. <i>A Bug's Life</i>'s opening weekend was almost twice as much as <i>Antz</i>', as was its total gross domestically. Personally, I haven't seen <i>Antz</i>, but <i>A Bug's Life</i> is a brilliant film, as strong as any other Pixar work with the exception of the original <i>Toy Story</i>, in my opinion.

I thought A Bugs Life was far better. Woody Allen had long become a parody of himself by the time this came out and it showed in his performance.
As for ranking it in Pixar's cannon I think it is likely the worst thing Pixar has ever done. Now if that was the worst thing I had ever done, I would be pretty happy because it was still a fine, fine film. In fact six awesome films.

I like A Bug's Life better. I liked Antz, and I think some parts are really funny and heartwarming, but it doesn't really know who its' audience is. One minute you've got little jokes for kids, the next minute you're got huge sexual innuendo, and pretty graphic stuff, like the scene where the main character, Z, is talking to a severed head. I have a feeling that Antz would have been as big a success as A Bug's Life if it had been able to overcome that flaw and find a target audience. Nonetheless, A Bug's Life is my favorite.

I like Antz better than A Bug's Life. I went to see Antz expecting to see a kids movie. I was shocked Antz is an adult war is hell movie. The only bad thing about Antz is Woody Allen's voice.

Heh. The way he says "Who the hell is that?" when he sees Abraham Lincoln on a penny make me laugh hysterically every single time. My favorite part in the movie.

I only saw
Antz once and it was a long time ago so I don't remember that much of it. But I do remember my reaction. I remember thinking it was really stupid. I also didn't like how it was advertise almost as a family-friendly movie and yet it had battle scenes and profanity. Which IMO is rediculous. Little cartoons/CGI Animated characters cursing does not make the film any more believable nor likeable.
A Bug's Life on the other hand had that excellent Pixar spirit that comes with each of their movies. I'm not sure exactly what the ratios of money made between these two films are and I know this is not recognized as Pixar's best but I'm not sure why. It is a great story with developed characters and family fun that should come from an animated film.
Dreamworks is better than Pixar!

LOL! No No. I just thought I might add that in to remind everyone. Maybe the reason I like
A Bug's Life better than
Antz is because I like Pixar more than Dreamworks. But no. I definetly do not want to start nor continue a discussion with everyone's opinions about these two. So no one better add anything!

I haven't seen Antz in years but I can tell I prefer the character design in A Bug's Life. I mean, what were animators thinking when they gave those ants faces that look as if they were run over by a truck?!

I like both movies, but A Bug's Life is definitely the better one.

It's hard to say. If I were going on characters, A Bug's Life would win. But if I were going on story and comedy, Antz would win.

I actually liked Antz much more. I thought the story was stronger, and A Bug's Life is probably the weakest Pixar movie by a mile. The only area I'll give A Bug's Life is the animation. Antz had an odd, ugly look to it while Bug's life was much more colorful. But Antz had the stronger script.

I would say A Bug's Life is probably the weakest in the Pixar cannon, which is like saying the Mona Lisa was the weakest of DaVinci's works. (They're all exceptional!) I think A Bug's Life is definately a better film than Antz. Antz is just so ugly and conspicuous. It's almost like they wanted to parody Disney/Pixar by having drab character/set designs instead of the lush and colorful hues they should have been.
The ANT pyramid was pretty far out, though.
