I think the moment Prince Phillip calls "Stitch is lost and alone" is the saddest - mainly because it's a feeling that we, the audience know only too well. Even the young children, perhaps seeing their first ever film, will know how Stitch is feeling at that moment, and thus will feel it themselves.

I'm over 30 now, and also quite fortunate in that I've rarely encounted death in my life, especially death of close family members. While the death scenes mentioned do upset me, I find that I don't really place myself in the role of the main character, like I did with Stitch.

I think that The Lion King, when Mufasa dies, is the saddest event of all the Disney movies. That was so touching, and emotional to see poor Simba, believing that he killed his own father.

People..... what can be more sad then "Baby Mine" from dumbo?! iv'e seen it over 150 times, and no matter what, i cry absolutley every time i see it!

I can't see how the others even compare! Except for maybe the sword in the stone squirrel scene that chokes me up too.

Here's a list in my opinion of how sad the scenes are (saddest to least sad):

1) Dumbo- "Baby mine". like i said.... i cry each and every time.
2) The Sword in the Stone- the squirrel scene. almost always brings tears to my eyes.
3) Bambi- bambi's mother killed
4) Lilo and Stitch- stich is lost and alone. i can relate to that scene which makes it very sad for me. Even though i cant stand the movie.... it's a very moving scene. for me anyway.
5) The Lion King- Mufasa's Death.
6) Tarzan- Opening Scene
7) The Hunchback of Notre Dame- Opening scene. Not as sad as it is exciting, but moving none the less. And the amazing music adds a whole new level to the scene and makes it even more powerful.
Beauty and the Beast- Beast Dies. It's sad and quite a shock when it happens, but i don't see what everyone is so choked up about in this scene.... i mean, half a second later he's alive!
9) Alice in Wonderland- Alice is lost and alone. its a little sad.... but nothing serious... you don't end up really feeling bad for her, unlike when Stitch is lost and alone and you can feel for him. Not more then half of us have been lost in wonderland.... so we can't really relate to her as well.
10-13) none of these last four are really sad so i'm not going to put the in order. I'm just going to explain. I'll start with Ariel not getting picked (little mermaid). i mean.... come on! you see the hypnotised look eric's eyes, and it's pretty obvious thathe didn't ditch her out of choice. Second: Cinderella gets locked in the tower. it's nothing major... know what i mean? it's just a teenager who can't go to the dance type thing.... plus she has all her little mouse friends to keep her happy. "we can do it! we can do it! we can help our cinderelly....." I must admit... that it is the most adorable song that i ever heard but still.... ! third: Snow whites death.... here's a character with no real personality and when she's killed temperely, its no big deal... Plus... in a movie called "snow white", and with a total 'happily ever after' up, who's worryin'? and last but possibly leasy...sleeping beauty. Aurara gets put to sleep and phillip is captured. what is the deal here??? .... if anything, i found the phillip capturing funny rather than sad! with all those cute little monster things running around..... ... y'know! it may be exciting (and obviously not as much as hunchback's opening scene).... but sad? no way!

Oh.... and Phillip.... You left out the opening scene in finding Nemo! if that's not sad.... i don't know what is!

Although I'm not a big fan of either of these films, Baby Mine from Dumbo and the squirrel scene from Sword in the Stone both depress me. Since "Baby Mine" is the only intentionally sad scene in a Disney movie that has ever achieved the feat of making me cry (I've cried in things that weren't really meant to be tear jerkers but got me anyway because I could relate, such as the ending of Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh), I voted for it.

Oh.... and Phillip.... You left out the opening scene in finding Nemo! if that's not sad.... i don't know what is!

Gee, that IS very sad... I can't believe i forgot that!!! I felt SO bad when i saw that scene. Its kinda related to my reasoning about the squirrel scene....i've had family die and thats one part of life that everyone has to deal with, but to lose your spouse/significant other and your children is proven to be a more difficult thing to get over (or at least thats what all my psychology books say)...

Never seen Dumbo, but it sounds sad... Yes the squirrel sceen is very sad... Bambi, blah blah... Lilo and Stitch, sad, but nothing tear jerking... TLK, see Bambi comment... Tarzan, sad but not as sad as Hunchback, exciting opening...

Very sad the way the mother runs, to try and save her baby and is killed, and just the words and power of music, very powerful very moving...

How could you not get choked up, when the Beast reaches out to Belle, and says through his last gasping breaths, "you came back" and Belle chokes out, "of course I did", and the beast dies, and she says, "I love you" just as the last pettle falls...

We might know that Eric has been hypnotized, but Ariel doesn't, and she is heartbroken, hence the tears she sheds, and the sun is setting, but her mind isn't even on her impending enslavement to Ursula, she is just so sad.. I find this sceen very sad...

Cinderella, is only happy at one time during the movie, and that is when she is dancing with the Prince, and now she finally has the possibility of some happiness in her life, if the shoe fits she marries the Prince, and her stepmother locks her in the tower to prevent this, smashing her dreams... how could you not think it was sad, even if it doesn't choke you up...

I personally agree with tou about Snow White, but many people found that scene sad, and people were balling their eyes out at the premeire... Same thing sorta with Aurora, except Aurora does have a personality, and I think it's sad when she falls under the spell, and then Phillip goes to see her at the cottage and isw kidnapped, the whole thing is nothing that chokes me up, but it is sad that these two innocent young people are fallen prey to such an evil person...

You forgot a very sad part in a Disney Film. Which is one of my favorites...

#1) Widow Tweed leaves Tod alone in the forest. (The Fox and the Hound)

#2) Penny is alone and losing faith. (The Rescuers)

#3) Gurgi appears to be dead (The Black Cauldron)

Sorry I don't want to bring this back but I couldn't resist posting. The Fox and the Hound part when the lady has to give away the fox. I cried for a while . Huchback, Dumbo. and Tarzan were very sad.

I voted for the bambi´s mother death.

but the mufasa death is also very sad.

The saddest scene is really when Hercules loses his immortality in Hercules,but I picked the beginning of "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" where one dies and another almost dies.Sad scene overall.

For me it'd have to be Mufasa's death...

They built the father-son relationship up so strongly that it was all the more sad when Simba tells his dad to please wake up ...

JTT did a great job with the voicework there...very believable...

Gets me every time...although i don't like to admit it...

I voted for the beast's death because it is a scene that makes me cry.

But the saddest Disney movie has to be Dumbo. I haven't watched it in over a decade because I would feel traumatized as a child after watching it. Some of these sad scenes are too intense for children. Looking over the list I'm beginning to think Disney is sadistic.

I voted for the beast death because it's very tearful at the end of the movie.

i voted for Dumbo. THis was one of two disney scenes that made me want to cry. the othe was Monsters Inc. when Boo and Scully say goodbye to eachother. gets me every time.

the saddest scene in an animated feature will probably be in the Jungle Book when Mowgili thinks Baloo is dead after the fight with Sher Khan. at least Baloo wasnt really dead. (Hey Baggy Dont stop there. theres more, much more.)

Has anyone noticed that when Bambi and his mom appear in the Rescuers, it's the shot of them just before the mom dies?????? I can't believe they'd want to show that again.

And think if they make a "Bambi and the Great Prince": it would be a midquel, starting just after Bambi's mom dies. A death in a DTV! Wow! But now we'll have to go through all that sadness again!

i think beasts death and mufasas death are the saddest but i picked mufasa's death because beast comes alive but mufasa just and when i was small i used to when beast and mufasa died so i think they are both the

Mufasa's death. Simba is all alone and he doesn't have anyone to help him and everytime I see it I think of losing my father or a beloved one. It always makes me crie But I always kick off those feelings by saying jerk to Scar when he comes in

I always wanted to know why Simba didn't just go to his mom. I mean, when you're little, the person who can always help you is your mom ("your mother and mine" ), so I don't know why Simba didn't just go to Sarabi. Did he honestly think she would be mad that her son killed Mufasa? She probably wouldn't have even believe Scar had she not been so ridden with grief. If Simba was there, she would have believed him.
