Oh WOW! I didn't realize that the Gift Sets came out in October! :D
Well, can't blame Disney...October's a great month! ;)
I sure hope there'll be a gift set for JB! :)

Wonderlicious wrote:I was going to start a thread on this, but seeing as a Jungle Book thread exists, I may as well post what I think; I think that The Jungle Book will actually be the October 2007 platinum instead of 101 Dalmatians. Why?

1. It will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary in October 2007, and seeing as Disney loves the word "anniversary", I think we can expect Disney's first triple-titled DVD.

2. Disney has a tendancy to release exotic films in autumn (The Lion King, Aladdin and Mulan came in October/November).

3. In Europe, 101 Dalmatians only got one release on video in 1996, so pushing that film up would probably be fair for all Europeans.

4. In late 2007, Disney will have been 70 years in the feature film business. Disney always get excited about these kind of things and will probably start a "70 years of feature-length classics" celebration all over Disney-dom. A DVD release of The Jungle Book would be a better tie-in around this time, as this movie has more legacy than 101 Dalmatians being the last movie made by Walt.
Wow, I didn't think of that. Great points!

Yes that was the only release, except of course for the DVD/VHS that was released in 2000 ;)

I should correct you there; in 2000, there was only a DVD release and no video. According to Amazon in both UK and Germany, no video was released. And, remember that not every house had a DVD player in 2000 like now, so the platinum will be the first real mainstream release of 101 Dalmatians in Europe for over a decade. :)

Well, maybe Amazon is wrong because my Auntie has a copy of 101 Dalmatians on VHS with the identical cover as the 2000 VHS. Also amazon doesn't seem to think the original releases of Hercules or Mulan exist either!

The 2000 DVD and the 1996 video had pretty much the same cover art, so you're probably getting mixed up, as I'm tellin' ye, Disney did not release another edition (besides the DVD) of 101 Dalmatians! I remember the original DVD being released and seeing it in shops, but I don't remember seeing videos accomponied like with The Jungle Book, Pinocchio and Hercules that had simultaneously released videos.

True, but then if that was the case, the platinum editions would come out like this:

2001(Fall): 101 Dalmatians(40th anniversary)
2001(Fall):Beauty and the Beast(10th anniversary)
2002(Fall): Aladdin(10th anniversary)
2002(Fall): Snow White(65th anniversary)
2003:I guess none this year! :(
2004(Fall):The Lion King(10th anniversary)
2005(Spring): Lady and the Tramp(50th aniversary)
2005(Fall):Cinderella(55th anniversary)
2006:None
2007(Spring): Bambi(65th anniversary)
2007(Fall): Jungle Book(40th anniversary)
2009: Little Mermaid(20th anniversary)

Just a note that Cinderella really is coming out this year. Though I get your point. Also with Aladdin, I don't think Disney would really celebrate a 12th anniversary. A 10th or 15th maybe, but not a 12th.

I know Cinderella is coming out this year, I just wanted to say it anyway to explain my point better!

Anyways I understand why you thought Disney wouldn't celebrate a 12th anniversary, even though they did! But since I get your point, I edited my list and put Aladdin in a 10th anniversary spot :P !

You certaintly missed my point! My point was that Disney doesn't always release Platinums editions on the movies' anniversaries. If that was true than Lady and the Tramp shouldv'e been released in 2005. Get it?

Timon/Pumba, you might want to edit your list one more time. I think 101 Dalmatians was first released in 1961, not 1966. And Jungle Book will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2007, not its 10th. Sorry, couldn't resist those little nitpicks.

WOW! I knew I made a mistake with Jungle Book but I didn't know 101 Dalmations came out in 1961! I must get it confused with the live-action one! Anyways thanks for finding those flaws Miss Jo :thumb:

Anytime, anytime. :)

Oh, um, one more teeny tiny thing. You spelled "anniversary" wrong beside Beauty and the Beast. Sorry, Timon, I just had to say that while we were on this subject! But now I'm done finding flaws. Your list will be absolutely perfect now. :D

I didn't imply that all platinums would be released in anniversary years; what I meant to say was that as Disney is beginning to use the term "anniversary" to promote a DVD release a lot, and it would seem likely that in the future, they may change the platinum timetable very very slightly in order to get a release-date to co-incide.

I don't think they care that much about the term anniversary! I mean they missed out on releasing Lady and the Tramp as a 50th anniversary! Preferring instead to release in in 2006 it's 51st year!

Also the VHS my Auntie has is not the original, it has the gold "Classics" banner on it, that was brought in in the late 90s. That's why I was suprised to see it.

No, don't give up yet!

Argue that it is a counterfeit that my Auntie produced in droves, in order to flog when she has boot sales, to deprive Disney of millions! ;)
