I haven't seen any Studio Ghibli films except for Kiki's Delivery Service which is one of the worst films I have seen in my 13 years of living! I really would like to see Spirited Away just to see what the hype it about.

The only other anime I've seen are the advertising crap(Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh).

Outside of Miyazaki not a big fan of Japanese animation.

Thought Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away were brillaint. Really liked Kiki, the Cat Returns and Porco Rosso too. Not a bad film in the bunch released so far.

Merged Alan's topic with Jafar's. :P

I'm more of a Studio Ghibli fan than an all-around anime fan, but I definitely won't knock the format. It's a lovely art, and the mentality behind anime as a genre so far evolved beyond Western animation. Anime as a filmmaking tool has been used for anything the filmmakers can dream up - it's not limited to cheap TV cartoons and family entertainment, as is the case in the U.S.

I do like a select few other anime films and series besides Ghibli, though - and I keep meaning to watch more. I just never get around to it! ;) Off the top of my head I can think of Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers as some examples of good-quality anime that I like. The Animatrix was also incredibly good... I have the DVD of it, in fact. :D

As a modethirator I wanna make a comment particulary pertaining to Genie Jafar's original thread asking if you liked animé and why, specially concerning a few of the first replies, which i couldn't post then cus i was busy battling the demons of the vowels of hell at the time, and applies to posting in a Forum in general, so i'll post it NOW.
If you see a thread about a subject and it's obviously (like this was) a thread about enjoying and/or loving the subject, tho we are all entitled to our opinions, true; it would be nice if you were mindful and try not to post in it only those kinds of posts then that are totally negative, like "I hate the subject" "i can't stand the subject" "The subject is crap", cus then instead of turning the thread into a constructive discussion of the subject, (which was what the author wanted), it becomes a thread where the fans of the subject when they open it instead 'oh wow cool a place where i can discuss the subject with other like minded individuals' suddenly find that they're having people attacking their hobby, object of affection, reason in life, raison d'etre, etc :D. So it would be benefitial to healthy discussions that if you wanted to truly critizice or write off a subject you opened instead your own thread about: 'Subject: Why we find it dethpicable" or at least contribute something much more constructive than ONLY just an "I hate it" in your post made to the 'loving the subject thread'. Okee? ;)
And yeah i know ive done it about Regurgitate of the Jedi, but that's family and in zany spirits :-P

Well now that the public service announcement is outta the way,

mmm my animé is classique Astro Boy :-P (my first animé ;) ), Kimba (or Simba or whatever :-P) the White Lion, Ribbon no kishi (A.K.A. Knight Princess), Metheor (A.K.A. Speed Racer tho mm i don't think i'd be so thrilled today about it as I was :-P), Project A-Ko, Lain, Mononoke Hime, Angel Sanctuary, Blood, Vampire Hunter D, Ruroni Kenshin, Najica Blitz Tactics, (altho i still haven't watched it :-P), Tenchi Muyo (nice colors in the daughter of darkness DVD :D), etc, I've even watched one animé with the boy that transforms into girl (or is it viceversa?) and the panda  :-P. Oh.. And Stuff.
As the dethi is omnivorous, i just want more.. of everything. Feed me!

Why I like the animé, apart from the various stylizations of the dawings, it's the other worldiness of the culture and the concepts which sometimes is close to the heart of deth and sometimes it's way out, and the complexities they cram into the stories, even if they don't always animate them so fluidly. Hey, less movement, more thinking. What more could you want? Music? ahhh those anime teary eyed spiritual songs themes!

^^^ Deathie likes the smilies! :D

Much of my post deals with cartoons on TV, as opposed to theatrical movies.

I have heard many people who dislike anime say that it is because there isn't constant motion, unlike American cartoons like WB and Disney. However, I personally prefer the beautiful artwork of anime, even if it isn't constantly in motion. The animators (and the original manga artist) are able to convey the entire spectrum of human emotion through their drawings, and the backgrounds are so much more detailed than backgrounds in cartoons.

Anime has been targeted towards any audience imaginable, while cartoons are almost without exception targeted towards children and their families. Ignoring out the (IMHO) despicable action of creating a show solely to sell toys, cartoons are limited by their audience in dealing with complex topics.

Even if the topic is deemed suitable for children, it may be impossible to talk about it in a cartoon, since the audience can't be expected to understand some of the complex words or concepts. Anime, even the titles targeted towards children, has introduced many of these complex topics in a much more realistic way. Personally, I would rather have my children watch a show that had someone die from jumping in front of a car, rather than one that showed a character bouncing off the hood and jumping up again (old WB cartoons, etc.)

In Japan, anime is treated with as much respect as a live-action TV show or movie, and the shows have similar budgets. American TV animation in particular has always seemed to have very low budgets, and as a result, poor production values.

As others have posted, I enjoy the stories, which are quite different than many of the stories that have been used for a while here. Also, the series are usually planned, with story arcs that end, instead of something that is episodic and just goes on forever. The music is often very nice, with fully-orchestrated pieces throughout the series, or rock music written for the series by well-known stars in Japan. Most modern American TV animation is lucky to even have a somewhat decent theme song, which will be repeated ad nauseum for most other parts of the show.

I have about 300-350 mangas, which are the black and white graphic novels on which many anime are based. I also have about 350-400 animes, covering all genres and decades.

I enjoy Rumiko Takahashi's work, along with CLAMP, Leiji Matsumoto, Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina,) Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli, and series like Azumanga Daioh, Bleach, Cowboy Bebop, El-Hazard, Escaflowne, Excel Saga, GTO, Lupin the III, Naruto, One Piece, Rune Soldier, SDF Macross (Robotech,) Slayers, Tenchi Muyo, and Trigun.

I. A very huge probem with anime is that there aren't places where you can rent it. Because of this you go to Blockbuster and find just a very brief selection of titles and most of these are: already seen series (DBZ, Pokemon), bad series and/or incomplete ones.

...So the only way to actually get quality anime is by buying it yourself. And for us (people that know) is very well known how expensive it can be: $30 per DVD and a series usually have 7 DVDS at least. Then of course are the box sets, which are cheap in comparison but still most of them more expensive than regular TV series.

...And to make sure you are going to spend well your money, you have to make a search for reviews on the series you want or even more: look for info on the type of series you're looking for. This of course takes a LOT of time, especially if your're a newbie that have to first learn about specific aspects (anime101 courses online).

II. Anime is not easy to get or understand at first glance. Especially if you've had bad experiences with it before (bad series, porn series or extremely complicated ones). And even with good ones, it takes time; I know, I lived it.

III. People can't understand that anime equals live action series in Japan. This means (as littlefuzzy said) that animation is just the medium. That's why it is considered art. And that Japanese can tell whatever stories they want. So then, people complain: "cartoons are for kids" and when they see something much more adult oriented then they get offended because it's too much.

So why is it that the BATMAN series are appreciated by adults (and won awards) because the way it was oriented?

Alan wrote:Does anyone here watch anime or do people here just watch disney films only?
I watch anime. I've watched since I was a little kid, and I probably liked the anime more than the Disney movies I watched.

I became a passionate anime and manga follower like 3 1/2 years ago(I've always been passionate about anime since childhood, though); just recently I've become an irregular/extraordinary Disney fan like most of us here. Before, I usually thought Disney was cool, an important part of pop culture, but not meant for me since I'm not a kid. I also hated how it is so commercial, perhaps because I wanted certain animes to get such treatments like our Disney princesses do.
Now I like both and consider myself an animation fan overall.

For those of you who just hate anime for the animation or other superficial factors, I recommend you to check out the plots of anime.
Many animes are sooo exhilarating and there's plenty out there that can touch your heart DEEPLY.

For example, Sailor Moon (uncut, original version) is so heart-touching and warm. This is especially felt at the season climaxes where the heroes face the villains/main boss. I just can't express how passionate I've become for this series for being so moral and heart-moving.
At the top of my head, I can remember crying over the death of a certain villain, who later opposed his evil clan, for defending the innocent civilian who fell in love with him - opening his heart to love... He died in her arms...!!!

The real problem is that much of the anime that airs on TV in the US is bad. People did complain about Batman being too adult.

Bravo! :D

There's a lot of bad anime, just like there's a lot of bad American/Western cartoons. I think anime itself is a derogatory term. When people think of anime, they think of Yu-gi-Oh or Pokemon, which is are really no better than Saturday morning cartoons. However, you can hardly lump the likes of Sailer Moon and Co. with great Japanese animated features like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. You just can't can't. Someone here posted that they don't find anything artistic in anime. Strange, that a person can't see art in art itself.

Also, who cares if animation is realistic? Like Roger Ebert said, the mere notion of realistic animation is an oxymoron. Then just film in live-action, right? Anime has a way of catching emotion, which proves more realistic than visuals. Not just Hayao Miyazaki, but basically all Studio Ghibli productions do this well.

Word!

Also, the animation is to translate us to another places, in our imagination and in our mind, so why give this real touch?
What is real is real and what´s not is not, let´s leave it like that

And Batman yes, was kinnda adult, but hey, what do you expected of a hero who disguizes itself with the color of the night and fight with wackos, deadly women and weird guys?
Come on, is the Night´s Knight!
