I've actually learned more Japanese on my own as opposed to the Spanish I learned in the three years I took Spanish class. I guess it all depends on what you're most interested in.
I'm hardly fluent in Japanese, but I do know enough to get through most of the unsubtitled anime I watch. I also have weird thing for Japanese pop music. I can probably sing any Japanese Sailor Moon song you could throw at me.
Notice the Japanese in my siggy? It's from a Sailor Moon song.

I would also like to learn Japanese. I had so many Japanese friends once and they told me I was quite good writing it and pronouncing (funny thing since the sounds come almost exactly as Spanish ).
How much time does it take to learn at least the basic of it? and is it too hard?

Two-three years to learn enough to be able to speak it well. Another year to be fluent. If you plan on learning how to write and read it as well, you could learn the hiragana and katakana in about a month. For kanji, you need to know at least 5000 to read a newspaper, so that could take up to five years. Fortunately, you'll find hiragana symbols next to the kanji a lot, but that won't happen all of the time.
I would suggest to not waste your time learning it unless you need to.
