I think the first one was made by a production company other than Disney, and had only limited theatrical engagements. Disney picked it up and premiered it on the Disney Channel and took over video distribution rights.

They might have some creative impact over the sequels, as they distributed them to home video from the get-go, but again, animation (and most of the story) would have come from elsewhere.

Of all the releases thus far, the Davy Tin is my favorite.
I know I'm in the minority here but I just LOVE that collection.

...and no I was not alive when they first aired.

I believe it was done by Hyperion/Kushner Pictures and Disney only picked up the video distribution rights after the producers failed to strike a deal with distributors and eventually it aired on the Disney Channel in 1987 before it's initial theatrical release. Several of the animators who worked on this film actually ended up at pixar in later years. The animators had pushed it at Disney, as did Tom Wilhite, who eventually ended up leaving Disney and producing the film himself. Wilhite is the unsung hero who actually STARTED the Disney animation renaissance, BEFORE Katzenberg and Eisner and Wells arrived. He recruited new talent and oiled up the mentoring program again. He also embraced and encouraged a young Tim Burton, giving him extra studio money to do special projects. Wilhite founded Hyperion Films, an homage to Walt in the name... The original idea with Toaster, based on the book, was that everything would have these shiny, metallic surfaces, perfect for the computer's capabilities at that time. Disney was afraid of the price tag, new territory, and the story, frankly, wasn't quite there. Plus, when it was pushed at Disney, they were still terribly understaffed and were being very selective about what went into development for animation. Wilhite loved the book enough that he was able to grab the film rights (a process called "Turnaround" where a studio gives up rights to a project) and because of limited budget and the fact that a computer-driven movie would be scary territory (it had only been a few years since TRON was completed) the film was animated, mostly overseas, but with lead animators who were ex-Disney. Many, like Randy Cartwright, went back, and a few, as mentioned earlier, went to Pixar.

I also love that collection and I cant understand why... The production is cheap, the action scenes are horribly choreographed and fake looking and the dialogue is cheesy, as are the noticeably fake backdrops in certain sequences along with the"borrowed" footage in parts involving wildlife segments, etc... but for some reason I love this. Probably due to my childhood obsession with Davy Crockett; I wasnt alive either when these aired but I rented the videos every other weekend.. I can understand how most people wouldnt appreciate these episodes though.

Well, part of it for me is the characters.
Davy was such a likeable, down-to-earth kind of guy. You never saw a hint of ego with him, and while he didn't look like he could whup an indian or handle a bear with just his knife, well, he did. Georgie was the perfect sidekick...not one to grab the spotlight or even try to from Davy.

Even some of the villians, like Mike Fink, were likeable guys. You could tell that Fink could just as easily be a friend to Davy under slightly different circumstances.

That's a shame ... and now it's next-to-impossible to try and complete this collection as you'll pay 2X-4X the SRP for them.

I know... Maybe someday they'll release a box set of MIckey Mouse/Goofy cartoons. That's what I really miss. And I bet Davy will be re-released, hopefully

I have all 7 so far and am thrilled to have them as part of my collection. Davy was the last I bought and simply got it off of EBay just to have the complete set but once I got it I found out I love it.
Can't wait for the next wave to be released in December.

All but Davy Crockett

Just not my thing...

Interestingly, the ONLY one my old boss has is Davy Crockett, and his boys (5 and 3) love it to death.

They watch it constantly wearing their coonskin caps (don't know where he got those), and he has to wonder if it's possible to wear out a DVD...

I guess Walt knew what would stay entertaining to kids forever.

I really like the Davy Crockett movies! And I doubt if they will wear out if you watch it all the time, but then I'm not a DVD expert.

I'm actually glad this thread was bumped because I now have a completely different answer.

I have Behind the Scenes, MM B & W, MMILC and Goofy sitting on my shelf now, with Disneyland & Davy Crockett in the post (and Wave 3 on order).

Doing what I can do to get Symphonies now!

Do I regret spending the money? Not a chance...

Lucky Duck!!! I will continue to hope for a rerelease without the tin (so as to be less expensive).

Glad you got them Loomis. I know how bad you wanted them. If I see any around, I will be sure to pick them up for you (like I would really see them around...) It's the thought that counts!

I've been out looking lately and there is NOTHING to be found. Even Behind thye Scenes has disappeared. It's amazing how quickly these things fly off the shelves and I am very happy I got my Amazon pre-order in for Wave 3.

I've seen 3 copies of Behind the Scenes (wave 2) and 1 of MMBW. If anyone is really interested in me picking up one or two, please tell me so we can work out a deal. I don't know how much longer the Mickey B&W is going to stay on the shelf for a little over 30.00 US

Just Disneyland U.S.A. The other ones are cool and all, but not things I think I'd rewatch much. I'm thinking of maybe picking up "Mickey Mouse in B&W" and perhaps "BTS at WD Studio".

For sure I'm getting Walt's Tomorrowland.

you should grab that Mickey for yourself and drop it on Ebay... It'll pay for half of your wave 3's
